A thread to discuss Pink Floyd. What's your favorite song? Favorite Album? Member? Anything, as long as it is Floyd related, can be posted.

I love everything about Pink Floyd. From the psychadelic vibes of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Saucerful of Secrets, and Atom Heart Mother, to Meddle's godly brillance of Meddle, the concept albums, the solos, everything.

Comfortably Numb is my personal favorite song, but Sheep is very close. And it's to hard to choose my favorite album.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade
your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Wish You Were Here is a classic. My favorite from that album is Have A Cigar. Another Brick in the Wall is also good, just a little overplayed.

The whole of the WYWH albums is classic. My favourite Floyd album in fact. I do also like the Division Bell though. In fact, I like all of their albums before Waters left, and the only one I don't like after he left is Momentary Lapse of Reason.

Favourite album? Animals and Wish You Were Here share the distinction.

Favourite song? I have three (actually two of them are songs in the full meaning of that word, A Saucerful of Secrets has only wordless vocals at the end) -- Pigs (Three Different Ones), Hey You and the aforementioned ASoS.

You should take the time to listen to "Wish you were here" - it is, as some have said, a classic. I'm fond of the live-version found on the album P.U.L.S.E.

Comfortably Numb

Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb.

Favorite Pink Floyd song? Interstellar Overdrive. Yeah, I know there are lots of people going "WTF?" at this point, but there's just a combination of things in there that make it unique, especially towards the end where the music just rolls back and forth between the stereo channels, it creates this synesthetic effect of the feeling of waves going through you.

And yes, you can have the same experience if you're not stoned too.

Listening to Floyd while stoned is something that you owe it to yourself to do. I went to see the Aussie Pink Floyd a few days ago, and I was stoned out of my mind...it was fucking awesome. Seriously, the visuals, the music, etc...everything just came together perfectly.

floyd is my fav band of all time...i think i have everything ever put out, im currently up to 34 albums right now, plus the dvds...ive also been working on finding all i can on vinyl, buts its been pretty hard, i only have about half of whats out there...here's the thing about wish you were here, i love it b/c its great and its floyd, but jesus its way too overplayed, same thing with another brick in the wall, or anything from the wall album for that matter...overall, the wall album is prolly my least favorite floyd album b/c that's the one that gets shoved down your throat by anyone who thinks they know anything about pink floyd when mostly they dont :headbang: ...the wish you were here album is good, but mostly b/c of the syd barrett inspired song shine on you crazy diamond(which also happens to be my fav song)...for those of you who dont know, that entire album is about syd barrett...overall my fav floyd album would have to be A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, the subtle rising sounds of signs of life, followed by learning to fly, then the anger in the dogs of war, moving onto one slip and then the absolute beauty of on the turning away gives me chills just thinking about it, not to mention a new machine parts 1 and 2...but i guess it all depends on what kind of pink floyd you really like...the change between the 70's and 80's is huge when considering floyd...so i guess it just comes down to person preferences...animals is a great album as well

yes. It's a metal eagle that rips chunks a flesh from the earth. other great visuals follow. "The Trial" and "Waiting for the Worms" segments have similarly awesome visuals.

Their best song and best album for me do not coincide. I mean how can yu turn from Dark Side of the Moon for their best album? The stats uphold that, as does the fact it has some of their best owrk on it, despite an absence that threatens its position with the Wall; that absence of course being Comfortably Numb, the best Floyd track; lyrics and guitar solo par excellence...

Well, the Ummagumma studio sucked pretty badly. The Narrow Way (Pts. 1 - 3) and Grantchester Meadows were good, but other than that it was terrible. Although I do enjoy the live album a lot.
Got all their albums, love the band to death. The biggest influence on my music, which is the biggest part of my life.
Favourite member would have to be David Gilmour, favourite song Meddle, and album probably Atom Heart Mother or Dark Side Of The Moon, although they're all great, with the aforementioned exception.

What does annoy me about them though, is that so many people have this misconception that you have to be stoned or tripping out to truly appreciate their music. That annoys me greatly, because it's completely untrue.

Pink Floyd is my favourite band. I would say Meddle or Piper is my fav. album. After they got famous everything seemed to go down hill (in my opinion). I really like their early stuff the best, especially when Syd was still around. Anyone listen to Syd Barrett's solo work? It's creppy shit.

My favorite Floyd songs are Comfortably Numb and High Hopes.

High Hopes means a lot to me. The video as well. Last summer, whenever I was getting ready to go visit my friends (they live about a 20 minute drive away), I'd watch this video. I can't quite explain it, but it's what I did and it relaxed me and helped me slow down to take in the events that were going to transpire (I cherish every second I spend with them, it's the only positive thing besides music that I have really). As someone who's chronically depressed and a social failure, that song says a lot to me, and it adds to my summer days somehow. I plan to watch that video throughout this summer as well (starting in June).

It is a good album. Second Floyd album I heard, after The Wall, though I've not listened to it for a while (it's not one of my favourites). I do like Interstellar Overdrive, though I guess that's not surprising because that sort of lengthy instrumental piece is what I like about much of the rest of Pink Floyd's work.

Piper isn't really a good introduction, actually. Its Barrett-era, and unless you're concentrating there it doesn't tell you anything; their style completely changed with Dark Side and Wall, really, daker for a start but also the style of music itself. In my opinion anyway.

Wasn't it Tatu who covered comfortably numb? *cringe*. I'm fortunate to have avoided hearing the damn thing.

I love Pink Floyd, they'll always mark a point in my life a few years ago when I really began to open my mind to other music, before I was a hardcore headbanger.

Everyone else has said the best songs IMHO, but I'll just list Time, Wish you were Here and Comfortably Numb (amazing guitar solo!) as my faves. Another Brick in the Wall (all three parts together, preferably) is awesome but pt 2 is overplayed x_x.

I still think it's a good introduction, because you can then see the direction they took away from the first album, and I think that helps to appreciate the later albums. If you listen to the albums in the order they were released (which I think is 'Piper...', 'Saucerful of Secrets', soundtrack for More, 'Ummagumma', 'Atom Heart Mother', 'Meddle', 'Relics', 'Obscured By Clouds', and only then did they release DSoTM), that's a pretty good introduction, because it shows the evolution of their sound, and the effect that Barrett had on it.

My favorite Floyd songs are Dogs (from Animals) and the Atom Heart Mother Suite (from Atom Heart Mother). For the AHMS, PF hired a symphony to play the music they wrote, and mixed in synthesizers, drums, and guitar with the string instruments. The suite is 23 minutes and it is amazing. Also, Live at Pompeii is one of the coolest rock movies ever. The Wall is great, but live at Pomeii is shot at the Pompeii ruins in an abandoned colleusium-like structure with no one except the band and the camera crew playing. It is amazing.

Favourite songs:

Favourite lyrics:
You run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Short of breath and one day closer to death

Floyd makes me happy, deep within my soul. Deep, deep within, where I hide the cookies.

My favorite's Hey You, but close behind are Have a Cigar and ABitW part 3.

You'll have to settle for 3, because if I started listing any more, I'd just end up typing all of them.
