Best Football Team of All Time!

I just saw an adidas add that I liked. Two kids were preparing a game of football (or "soccer", for all the challenged people out there :D ), and choosing random players for their team, from all times and teams.

If you could do that, who would be on your perfect team?

England '66. :p

Actually, I don't care for football at all. And I am supporting germany in the upcoming fracas.

Edit: I even have a german shirt.

I hate football.

Brazil in 1982. Although they didn't win it, they played some of the best football you have ever seen and it was only because Italy played out of their skins that they lost.

But it was the coach, Tele Santana, who impressed me most. He played his team the way football should be played, with players like Socrates having as much attacking flair as they had midfield bite.

He wasn't ashamed when Brazil failed to win either. He was proud of his team for playing some of the best football the world has ever seen.

So were they the best? To me, yeah.

Were they the most succesful? No. But honour is above victory in my book.

I agree that the new "Impossible is Nothing" advert by Adidas is good. So if I was in that position, here would be my team:
Goalkeeper: Peter Schemichel
Defender Left: Ashley Cole
Defender Centre: Franz Beckenbauer
Defender Centre: Bobby Moore
Defender Right: Miguel Nadal
Midfielder Left: Ryan Giggs
Defensive Midfielder: Roy Keane
Midfielder Right: Jorginho
Attacking Midfielder: Eusebio
Forward Centre: Pele
Forward Centre: Diego Maradona

Peter Schmeicel? No, Walter Zenga. Ashley Cole? NO! Paulo Maldini. Personally i'd have Alan Hansen in the place of Bobby Moore, but thats just me yanno. And personally i'd have Kenny Dalglish in a "just behind the strikers" role as well, instead of Eusebio. In fact, no players before about 78 would make it in, the game was way too different, too slow then. Else we'd have Sir Stanley Matthews in the team and be done with it...

Mine would be:

Goalkeeper: Lev Ivanovich Yashin (or maybe Gordon Banks, tough one that)
Def Left: Paolo Maldini
Def Right: Carlos Alberto
Def Centre: Franz Beckenbauer
Def Centre: Bobby Moore
Mid Right: Diego Maradona*
Mid Left: Johann Cryuff*
Mid: Platini
Mid: Eusebio
Str: Pele
Str: Puskas/Di Stefano

*Sir Stanley Matthews (as pointed out already) would play in either of these positions. Too many good players!!!

I think I'll follow Eric 'seagulls follow the trawler' Cantona's advice...and play 1-1-8!

Goal: Gordon Banks
Defence: Bobby Moore
Midfield: He comes from Senegal, he plays for...uh...Juve...(Patrick Vieira).
Attack: Thierry Henry, Pele, Maradona, Ronaldinho, Gary Lineker, Paolo Rossi, Gerd Muller, Alfredo Di Stefano.

Subs: Jose Luis Chilavert (it's going to be an attacking team, ok?:p ); Franz Beckenbauer; Bobby Charlton; Dennis Bergkamp; Wayne Rooney; Cantona; Zico.

Seeing as how the object of the game is to score more than the opposition, I figure it doesn't matter how many they score, so long as you score at least one more than they do. And I'm sure this team would manage that...

The Surly Mountain Stouts.
Okay, so they're not really a soccer team.
Okay, so they're actually my Blood Bowl team from last season at the game store.
I painted them myself though and they look nice.

I'm going to go watch some Hockey now.

W00T! I finally found the thread again.

Well, I'm surprised that Gerd Müller (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/p/cp/ger/mueller.html) was mentioned only once. You'd think he'd be in every team as main striker.

Why isn't he as popular or well-known outside Germany as he should be?

I think it's because he's not seen as a flair player - he was amazing in a very efficient German team, but he may not be so great in a team that includes (for example) Henry and Ronaldinho.

He was excellent no doubt. He was a fantastic striker with an excellent goals ratio and given he has fought through alcoholism as well only goes to show what he can beat. I believe he is a reserve coach at Bayern now.

Quite honestly, I think it was because he wasn't as stylish as others or had as much flair, but thats unfair on his record. Oh well, poor bugger.

They might not let you in given it's all ticket and they did it for safety (our Head Steward is a bit of a twat). Be aware that we do have a big bunch of scallies in our upper Kop who might take exception to Forest fans...

If you're a student you can get em for £12 (you have to ask specifically for it) or its £18 for adults.

I'm not going to display it openly, and I've got a broad Yorkshire accent and a BD23 postcode so i should be okay. So stay away from the Upper Kop is your advice.

Indeed, the lower main stand is a good choice, esp. at the far end next to the away fans. Most of the time the stewards don't bother you if you sit away from other folk so you should be fine. Beware a possible scally pitch invasion at the end. You not able to get tickets at Forest?

You gave us 6,000, 4,000 went to away season ticket holders and the other 2,00 went within an hour of being sold to season ticket hodlers. Over 5,000 people turned up to try and get those 2,000 ticvkets. About 4,000 people (i'm estimating) are supposed to be sitting in your end-there Forest fans.

If you let us have tickets we could have brought 14,000 easy, probably 16,000.

I don't know much about the history of the game, but I can give you my all-world team of right now:

--------------------------Buffon-------------------------

Ferreira-------------Terry--------Cannavaro--------------Puyol

Gerrard-------------Totti---------Ronaldinho-----------Kaka

--------------------Henry--------Shevchenko

I know that Puyol isn't a natural left back, but he's got to be on the field IMO.

Totti/Ronaldinho would be lethal in the middle of the attack, behind the strikers. Gerrard has played on the right at Liverpool recently, so he should be okay on the right in this side... and if necessary, he could track back to help cover the midfield on the defensive side of the field.

Kaka isn't a left wing, but he too should be on the pitch.

It's happened before, the portsmouth game. doesn't bother most of us, as our game is often better away than at home, so it might provide the advantage to us. :p
