What should I do?

So I went to the bar on campus to take the smart serve course* and test. I paid them $40 to take this thing and I wait. A month and a half later it occurs to me, I haven't got my certificate in the mail, so I contact the smart serve place and they don't have any records that I ever attempted the test. The bar never sent it in.

So now I'm faced with the fact that I can't apply to any summer jobs waitressing, where I could potentially make a whole lot of money (I've heard of some girls making enough money to pay their tuition and rent in one summer's worth of work) plus the fact that I've been ripped off.

I sent a strongly worded email to the campus bar manager earlier today and I'm planning on going down there on Monday to throw a fit about this. Should I try taking the online test or wait until I talk to the people at the bar? I'm inclined to take this test as soon as possible and then see if I can get my certificate in a timely manner and demand my money back from the bar.

I'm thinking of crawling into bed and crying.

I was already having a hard enough time finding a job, now it's just going to get worse. I'm more pissed off that I didn't know that they hadn't bothered to send the stupid thing in until now. I could have done something about this instead of thinking it was in the mail.

Have a yell at them.
Then after you sit it, work there and hand out free drinks

*I have faith you would pass the test easy*

I would try to get a refund, obviously. Not sure about retaking the test in advance though. Maybe the campus bar isn't under sufficiently competent management for it to be worth your time?

And yeah, working behind a bar is indeed fantastic money as a student, even if you are disadvantaged by maleness. Even weekend work easily covers rent during term time, so full time over summer, that's raking papers.

I know I passed the test, a monkey could pass it. It's one of those things where the answer that's obviously right is right.

If they don't give me a refund, I can try taking them to small claims court... unless that will end up costing more. I've got witnesses who saw me at the course and I should have the cheque that I wrote to them and they cashed to prove it.

I'm a girl and I was planning on waitressing. Apparantly waitresses tend to make more than bartenders in tips. I know it's something I could do well too.

Well thanks...

Have a fit it might help.

How did you pay them? If it was Credit card or Cheque then you should have evidence of the payment, which you can then use to force the bar into either refunding or re applying the test.
If it was cash and you didn't get a receipt then you are screwed. (But learn the lesson, always get a receipt.)

Edit: I just saw that you paid by cheque. Your bank should be able to return the actual cheque to you (technically it is your property) which you can then use in any claim you wish to make.

You haven't taken and failed the test, you're in New Zealand...

It's questions like "You have a patron who is slurring and has started to fall off his stool. Should you serve him another round?" (with multiple choices...)

Heh, the place I worked as a waiter had a policy of putting all the tips into a pot to be shared between the managers and head chefs as a bonus. The guys carrying the food got the usual hourly peanuts. My total tips for the summer (and a chunk of autumn) were £3 handed to me by a couple who could see that two waiters for 120 people was a slow death by stress. :(

Maybe it was just bad luck, but as a barman I got much more money and regular tips. I guess a female of above-average appearance would make even more at a restaurant not run by corrupt greedy bastards. I'd try to get a job at a decent place if I were you.

That sucks. I don't know if there are any places like that here (or if that's even legal here) but in either case, I can't do the job until I get this stupid certificate.

Go in face to face and see if anyone remembers you, sometimes a face to face meeting gets better results than the phone.

If not I hope there's decent paper trail, if not chalk it up as a loss.

Don't waste the remaining time you have.

Use the time get that piece of paper somewhere else and go make some money.

Screwing back may get you satisfaction but it won't pay your tuition.
