how do we simply define a galaxy? it's stated in wikipedia about the where
there is a huge gravitational system of stars and unseen. But can't there
be more to a galaxy than matter, more like if we didn't establish its limits,
could it become a transcending thought and life?

Galaxy isn't the type of word that will cause a lot of confusion if it doesn't have boundries. Probably best not to think about this one too hard.
