I'm buying my first car soon, and I want some advice. I had my eye on a honda civic for a long time, because they have good mpg and they're reliable. Any other suggestions?

My first car was a '63 VW Bug, so I'm voting for that.

Toyota Corolla is a great first car. It's easy to drive, gets GREAT mpg, and is very reliable. I think it's one of the best cars on the road today.

My first car was a '96 Cadillac Catera, and my current car is a '00 VW New Beetle. The New Beetle gets crazy awesome mileage, so I'd recommend it. I don't remember the Catera very well because I only drove it for like a year and a half before my parents bought me a new car o_o;.

OK. the Civic is a good choice then. If you were to put some subwoofers in it it would be better to get an Accord/Civic Sedan or a VW Golf/Jetta TDI

True, but if he can get it, go for it. They are so much fun to drive, although I obviously don't know how much difference there is between the UK and US versions (if available), i just pray they left the suspension and brakes alone and didn't soften them up for the Us market.

Not available in North America. Not because of govt policy, IIRC, but because Honda doesn't want to sell them here. The would rather you buy a standard Civic then buy the aftermarket kits they sell that would make it into a Type R clone.

I think Nissan Skylines are restricted in the US.

[Sarcastic cheapshot]Obviously they don't want cars that can corner AS WELL AS going fast in a straight line! [/Sarcastic cheapshot]

Man that sucks. I believe that TVR's, esp the Tuscan and Chimera models are also not available there either due to some reason or another. Such a shame. :(

My current (and first) car is my 2004 Lincoln Navigator.

I love it, its big, a greyish blue...and gets 11 1/2 miles to the gallon.

I also have 22 inch rims on it, and I recomend it to anyone with a love of SUVs.

Also, of course, it gets me from A to B....:D

Lol. When it is time for me to buy a car, mehopes I can find a Eagle Talon in my budet. They tend to go for 3-15K and just rip. The top of the line TSI (which made up the majority of Talons:confused: )was a 5-speed, awd, 300HP turbo car that any teen can afford to wrap around a telephone pole.

I've had three good cars in my life: a 1962 Bug, a 1985 Toyota Tercel, and my current car, a 2000 Honda Civic. They all got great mileage. Repairs and maintenance were relatively inexpensive (If you keep them properly maintained, you will need virtually nothing in the way of repairs). Do stay away from Fords, the jokes about them aren't really jokes, they're reality.

Why? That's boring. Better to get something you can do something cool with, like wrap it around a telephone pole. Or better yet, two.

Get a Pontiac Firefly between 95-00 they have a little 1 liter engine and it has the same mpg as one of those hybrid cars. It is also tough as nails, I've rolled mine over, droped the engine off the motor mounts and it still runs fine, infact I was able to drive it to the mechanics after I got it back on its wheels and out of the ditch. If you cant find the firefly go for a Suzuki Swift, Chevy Metro or a Geo Metro, there all the exact same cars, and they are extremly cheap to maintain and are the perfect little speakerboxes.

Well this depends entirely on how much money you have to spend.

If you can afford to drop $30k, a Subaru Impreza WRX STi is a great choice. It's an absolutely awesome care and gets 24mpg on the highway during those rare times when you aren't slamming your foot to the floor because you enjoy it way too much.

Civic would be good. If you could find one in good condition a BMW 318 is also really choice. Especially if you can find it in stick. I'd recommend stick on principle since in a 4 banger you can get 5-8 mpg better than an automatic, especially over time. Also much more fun to drive than an automatic. For an ugly shitbox you can throw around with impunity I'd recommend a late 70's to mid 80's volvo in stick. The gearboxes were insanely overengineered and they are almost indestructible. If you can find a mid 70's version or earlier you get the added bonus of the male fertility symbol being all over the inside of the car.

I currently have a Chevy Silverado, but if I had to do it over again, I'd get the diesel Silverado. Then, I'd try to convince either my parents or my sister and brother-in-law to set up a bio-diesel system. My brother-in-law would probably be more agreeable to that, seeing as he's got a 3/4 ton diesel Dodge Ram (my sister and brother-in-law heat their house primarily with a wood stove, so they need the big pickup).

For a first car though, I'd recommend something more economical (fuel wise, as well as price wise), like the Chevy Cobalt.

BTW, I don't work for GM, I'm just a fan. :D

1st choice: Honda Accord. The new model is very stylish, you can't go wrong with a Honda, these bastards a built like tanks.

2nd choice: Volkswagen, any. Always loved the styling of these cars, again, very reliable.

3rd choice: Subaru Impreza/Forrester. I don't really care for these cars style, they are kind of funky looking, but they have some of the highest safety ratings in the industry.

American cars, specifically FORD and CHRYSLER, are substandard, avoid like the pague.

GM is much better quality, stick with Chevrolet, Saturn, or GMC if you are buying American.

I dont see how you could see GM as being reliable, I've been driving gm and fords over the years and every single gm I've driven has fallen apart on me. At least with the new chryslers they are owned by benz, and the only car they screwed up on before that was the neon.
Oh and the only GM product I've ever had that has been reliable was a 95 pontiac firefly, and they were designed by suzuki.

And before you laugh, this little thing clocked 110 Mph and managed to go 75Mph in 2nd gear (its a 998cc engine). It also ran without oil for two months and never EVER broke down.

In fact, "First Generation MX-5" is the best answer to all car queries ever thought of.

I just picked up a 1999 MX-5 (http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/CIMG0520.jpg)and absolutely love it. I traded in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler for it since I've moved into town and don't need the 4WD anymore.

My first car was a 1986 Chevrolet Chevette. Great car. Great mileage, and the little bastard wouldn't break.
