I thought it might be nice to retire to an island (uninhabited preferably) in the mediterainan, build a house and live out my years. Are there any islands you can do that on without buying the darn thing mediterainian, or no?

I think there are a few uninhabited islands in Greece none that you can just go live on though sadly
You could always buy an oil rig somewhere and set up your own country

so you want to move to a country in europe which contains islands in the mediteranian sea, and build a house? that it? not buy the whole island?
cos the latter would be very doubtful indeed, unless you have bill gates style money...
the former is very likely, though i hear italian building authorities are utter tossers. don't know about the rest. your main problem would be the immigration i should think.
edit: oh uninhabited? no, not likely.
The Meds been heavily populated for thousands of years. Basically any rock capable of building a shack on has been taken a long time ago. Sorry :( .

I suggest retire to Goa, India.
You get more bang for your buck, the people and nice and friendly, and should you ever need drugs, there are plenty going around.

There are many Greek islands which are very remote and very sparsely populated. We're talking 300 or so people. If you want the same kind of isolation but with quick access to amenities if you require them, I'd suggest Cyprus. There's still plenty of undeveloped land on the west coast.

I think you can buy small islands of the coast of Brazil for about a quarter of a million immigration hassle isn’t too bad either but its the land of bureaucracy so you will be waiting for years to get approval of the purchase.

personally, i'd move to santorini cos its just lovely. small town on top of a volcano with a bit of land on the side for some nice isolation. only down side is while i was there a donkey farted in my face... which kinda makes the memory wholly less appealling :p

Believe it or not, there are some unclaimed mountains in the Pyrenees, that are not claimed by the French, Spanish, Andorrans or Basques, so go and buy one of those! Not far from the French Riviera, Northern Spain, and you can ski!

I know this is an obvious question, but I feel it has to be asked.
What was your face doing near an ass's ass?
Edit: That photo is beautiful. So blue...

You would be buying these from whom and what state would recognize your legal ownership?

ah its a volcanic island and the main town is up at the apex of the volcano, so there's two ways up: the cablecar or about 4km IIRC of steps hewn into the rock. we took the steps option and while i was just about to walk past this donkey on the steps in front of me it let out this horrifically loud, stinky, nasty fart... little bits of donkey-hair and flakes of shite spraying around too. i mean, it really was horrible :( :p

I think the moral of this story is obvious. Take the cable car.
On my last birthday, I was in Brasov in Romania, and me and a bunch of friends I was travelling with decided to go to the top of the hill overlooking the town (they have BRASOV in Hollywood style letters on the hill :D ). Anyway. We took the cable car up, then spent an hour scrambling down the rather steep, rocky, and wet path on the hill. Such good fun.

I think all the good islands have been taken by super villians plotting world domination.
