Bands You Love That Other People Hate

I month ago I did the opposite of this thread. It was pretty cool. So now I present it's sequal. Easy enough to understand. What band do you like that others hate.

Mine is Green Day. After American Idiot was released, the popular thing to do is to hate Green Day because "American Idiot" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" were both overplayed. Well, the rest of the album was excellent, and pre-American Idiot Green Day kicks ass. Not that American Idiot didn't kick ass. And for those who say Green Day is to big and popular, I'd like to remind you that some of the best bands in the world, like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd were massive back in their day.

I'm guessing you also like Pink Floyd...

I saw the Aussie Pink Floyd on Wednesday. They were fucking brilliant!

Anyway...Tool. Right now there seem to be dozens of thread on the forum for the Download Festival slagging them off saying they're not worthy of headlining the festival. Those people are morons. They're easily the best band playing that weekend - much better than Metallica or Guns N Roses (the other headliners). And the new album is great (I'm listening to it now, in fact). Their whole back catalogue is brilliant.

I can appreciate they might not be everyone's cup of tea ('alternative math metal', anyone?), but I just don't understand how so many metal fans don't like them.

As for Green Day, you're right. American Idiot isn't a patch on Dookie, though. I remember I was outside my local record shop waiting for it to open the day AI came out. I'll be doing that for the new Tool album as well.

Your right, I absolutely love Pink Floyd. As for Tool, I like them much more than GnR(who I hate) but Metallica... not so much. Metallica's first four-five albums are brilliance, but Load, ReLoad and St. Anger are terrible.

Tool's first four albums are brilliance as well. Which is, uh, all of them. ;) Early Metallica are quite good, but I'd say they've only done 3 albums worthy of any notable praise - Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, and the Black Album. Considering they've done 9 'proper' albums, I don't think that's a good return, especially when the last of those came out 15 years ago.

Mars Volta are...interesting. Frances the Mute is a better album than De-Loused in the Comatorium. I think they deserve praise simply for trying to mix together so many influences, but that they succeed (most of the time) is just amazing.

Nirvana, Led Zeppelin and Tool.

I think those are the only really significant ones. Maybe the Doors too? Meh.

Oh, and the Stone Temple Pilots. And the Sex Pistols count too, I guess.

And I liked Korn's first two albums. Slipknot's selftitled had a couple of decent tracks on it, and there might have been a couple on Iowa too, I think, but the rest of the stuff by both bands is crap. Oh, and the album "Smash" by the Offspring is genius, although anything after it is pretty bad. Ditto for Weezer's first and (to a lesser extent) second albums.

Placebo... Don't ask me why no-one likes them... *shiftyeyes*

Placebo are great. I think they hold the honour filled position of being the band to get me into music.

King Diamond? Isn't he a Dane? I've never heart any of his music, but I'm quite certain he has just played near my town.

Anyway, one of my absolute favourite bands would be dEUS. Nobody has agreed with me so far. All right, ONE of my friends said half of their debut record was OK, but that's all. 30 Seconds to Mars is another great band, not really hated in public, 'cause public has barely heard about it. I think there were 4 registered fans in Denmark last time I checked it.

Nickelback, I know they have a lot of fans but there is also a lot who hate them!! Why the hate?? Great talented band, beautiful lyrics, and gorgeous singer!

Ugh. You want to know why?

They're what's wrong with rock today. It's nothing more than commercial cock-rock - made for money without any artistic talent whatsoever. Their songs sound the same (a natural side effect of being manufactured to the same specifications, I guess) and use primitive instrumentation. I might be able to forgive the primitive instrumentation (which is no excessively big deal) if their songs weren't boring. Their lyrics in particular are a good example:

Someday, somehow
I'm gonna make it all right but not right now
I know you're wondering when
(You're the only one who knows that)
Someday, somehow
I'm gonna make it all right but not right now
I know you're wondering when

Ooohkay. Thanks Chad. Marvellous chorus there.

I love this one (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nickelback/rockstar.html) too. Is he trying dispel the image of him being in it solely for the money, and show us that he's actually a great artist who really cares about the music? It's not working.

As for him being gorgeous, I beg to differ (although its not exactly a credible reason for liking a band, but whatever). http://thephoenix.com/article_ektid7852.html (no. 6)

I agree with that. Massive head and weird face. :/

But hey, he's so HAWT, lets go buy all of his records!!

I can say one nice thing about them though. At least they aren't quite as bad as Creed. Now go listen to fucking Soundgarden, one of the decent bands whose success they tried to cash in upon.

But hey, I totally won't judge you based on your music taste. :)

You do realize that that list is a bunch of nonsense and made my immature guys who have no life. Why do we have to make lists to show what one person finds attractive or unattractive?? Are our lives really that meaningless that we must show others what is acceptable as beautiful?

Chad Kroeger is very talented. Have you heard all of his music besides the ones that are played on the radio?? Go out and get Curb or The State and listen to the whole CD and then tell me all his songs sound the same. The songs that are played on the radio are played for a reason. To grab your attention because they are catchy that hooks people in and want to hear more so they go out and buy the album. That goes for every single band! Can you honestly tell me that AC/DC's songs don't sound the same? But I guess its okay to like their music because their older and have been around longer right? Everybody says its okay to like them but if one person says no its not you conform to that thinking. Sad really.

Yes Soundgarden is a good band, I like a lot of their music too. Lets get off the Creed thing, it was okay to like them when they came out but apparently somewhere along the lines someone said it wasn't cool so its no longer allowed. And sex sells, can you say that any of your favorite actors/actresses you don't find attractive at all? People look and if you can sell the fantasy of this gorgeous rockstar singing to just you people will buy it. Its life, get over it!

About a dozen very, very heavy stonerbands which only a select few likes and none of those select few are any close friends of mine... hmmm

Which ones? I love very heavy stoner rock, so i'm open to suggestions. :p

So...erm...you don't like Nickelback, then?

Gee Sherlock, what on earth gave you that idea?

:p

You do realize that that list is a bunch of nonsense and made my immature guys who have no life. Why do we have to make lists to show what one person finds attractive or unattractive?? Are our lives really that meaningless that we must show others what is acceptable as beautiful?

I could care less, I was simply illustrating that I am not the only person that holds to the viewpoint that he is rather unattractive.

Which is beside the point, anyway. Its simply a poor reflection on modern society that people actually believe that the attractiveness of a singer is an influential factor in whether or not they will spend money for their records.

Chad Kroeger is very talented. Have you heard all of his music besides the ones that are played on the radio??

Not all of it, no. That's a torture I would think is unhumanly barbaric. ;)

I did, however, get a friend who insisted that I listen to them force me to borrow one a couple of years ago. It was the one with "How you remind me" on it. I can't be arsed checking what it's actually called.

Go out and get Curb or The State and listen to the whole CD and then tell me all his songs sound the same.

No, I think i'll spend my money on a CD i'll actually like, and i'm too lazy to download it. If you want to deliver it to my doorstep, however, feel free.

Sad really.

Not really, I find AC/DC boring too for that same reason.

Yes Soundgarden is a good band, I like a lot of their music too. Lets get off the Creed thing, it was okay to like them when they came out but apparently somewhere along the lines someone said it wasn't cool so its no longer allowed.

Are you kidding? I never liked them at all. I didn't have to be told otherwise, I have discerning ears of my own.

And sex sells, can you say that any of your favorite actors/actresses you don't find attractive at all? People look and if you can sell the fantasy of this gorgeous rockstar singing to just you people will buy it. Its life, get over it!

I can honestly say that i've never bought anything for the sexay factor of the musician or actress. I buy music based upon musical merit...

Huey Lewis and the News.

Yup. I love 'em. Yeah, they're now officially exiled to the where-are-they-now county fair circuit, but I'm always in the mood to hear honest rock 'n roll from a band who knew what they were doing. Do I think they're the best ever? Hell no. They're a guilty pleasure who knew how to write a good hook and were smart enough to book the Tower of Power horns to back them up. That sound was irresistable and never suffered -- and in fact often was much better -- when performed live.

I suppose they remind me of my adolescence, but from their self-titled debut in 1980 through 1982's Picture This (featuring easily their best tune, "Workin' For A Livin'") and 1983's hit factory Sports, and to a limited extent, Fore! in 1986 and 1988's Small World (which featured tenor sax jazz legend Stan Getz), I was a huge fan. Once they released Hard At Play (which featured only one song I can still hear without cringeing, "Couple Days Off") in 1992 and dropped the live horns, they were done.

Say what you want, but they were probably one of the last bands to infuse then-modern pop music with the rush and rumble of 50s original rock 'n roll. It was polished, but never to the extent that they couldn't jam live. In fact, I stayed after more than one concert when the band came back on stage and just cut it up for the die-hard fans and themselves. That's the love of the music showing, and I respect them for that.

It's said, half-jokingly, that Huey Lewis is in the line of bands who were also keepers of the rock 'n roll flame who further polished and mixed it with whatever was brewing in their own time. Bands like Spin Doctors and even Sonic Youth.

Regardless of popular opinion, they still earn time in my car's CD player.

I agree that old greenday was good. Albums like dookie were good, but american idiot was a horrible album even though songs like american idiot and boulivard of broken dreams were overplayed, other songs were still bad.

my reason for hating them is because they are complete sellouts to who they were. They made that album so that it would get as much playtime as it did, and so all the MTV sheep would buy it and say "omg i'm so punk and this band is so awesome and punk cause they put out an album thats called "American Idiot" like omg how cool is that?" and that's exactly what happened.
I only hate bands that stop making the music their original fans like in an attempt to gain mainstream acceptance. The fact that i dont like the music they make has nothing to do with whether or not i hate them. And i truly hate Green Day. The same way i hate Metallica for doing the same damn thing. Green Day used to be one of the few punk bands i thought were in it just to have fun and make good music. but now they're just another teeny-bopper band that went mainstream so they could make more money.

Band i like that everyone else hates? I'd have to go with Ozzy for right now. A lot of people are pissed after what happened at ozzfest last year with Maiden, but Ozzy wasnt the one throwing the eggs, and i know he's above doing stupid stuff like that. Great music, great guy, get over it :upyours:

I dig The Cherry Poppin' Daddies.

Now, if all you've heard is Zoot Suit Riot and think that they are the Johnny Come Latelies to the short lived swing revival, you don't know the Daddies.

They combine a dirty jazz feel with some punk, ska, rock, and whatever else they find with narrative song writing. Unlike the happy go lucky squeecky clean swing bands they are dirty and foul. I dig 'em.

I mean, Zoot Suit Riot is about a lynching...

As Steve Perry, thier founder, (weird, huh?) says-
DM) So how many people, do you think, hear the song and catch on to what it means?

SP) Well, I don't think that many people do. Look at "Drunk Daddy" on the "Zoot Suit Riot" album. It's about child abuse, essentially, and it's a swing song and everybody dances around to it.

DM) And do you think they're pretty much oblivious to what they're dancing to?

SP) Yeah, I think so. People are not trained to look into the interior; they're petty much surface. They're trained by capitalism, I think, to be that way. "Buy it because of the pretty surface." That's a planned obsolescence wired in. We put a pretty surface on things, just like everything else in this corporate society; hopefully, there will be some truth to it.

DM) When you sing a song which melodically might sound happy, but textually doesn't have the happiest message, what are you thinking and feeling at that time of diverging emotions?

SP) In a way, that's how I think of psychodelia. You know, L.A. is the creepiest place in the world to me, because the light is sort of soft and muted and nice and sunny, but Manson exists there. So, the cliche is the horrible, scariest place in Transylvania, but in actuality, it's Los Angeles. So, in effect, you can use things that are not cliches, to make it even scarier, or to make the point even more....

DM) Dramatic?

SP) Yeah, dramatic. It goes through undigested if you use the same old cliches. If you use the same old cliches, you don't feel the impact of the atrocity. I've seen people dance to that song and, in the middle of it, stop and start to understand what the words are and just cover their mouth and walk to the side of the floor. It would be way more dramatic than some heavy riff. It's way more powerful that way, to me.

So, them and Soul Coughing.
