Her music is catchy, but her lyrics need work.

Example:

It's an itch we know we are gonna scratch
Gonna take a while for this egg to hatch

...aaaand:

Here we go, we're at the beginning
We haven't fucked yet, but my heads spinning

...just in ONE song. This song ranks pretty high on my awful-ometer.

But I like that.

Anyway, "giving it all to you" rocks. When I grow up that's what I want from a relationship.

Well, you can't accuse her of being too conventional. ...wait, yes you can. Okay, I got it...you can't accuse her of not being pretty and managing to get some songs on the radio. That is pretty difficult!

It may, or it may not be, highly chick music. Guitars and talking about love and shit.

It's cool. I love it.

Apart from HWC, that's not to chick.

You're a big girl's blouse

..... but you have good taste.

Liz Phair happens to be one of my favorite artists. I'm listening to her right now.

I've seen her about a half-dozen times live and I have her personal autograph. So there. :p

(In addition to being an incredible artist, the woman is incredibly sexy.)

They can say what they want
But I don't hear thing cause
They can't read my thoughts
Or the secrets between ::us::
All of this time you where apart of me
Shining like a star in my galaxy

And I reach out trusting you there
Its like walking on a high wire into thin air
And I'm waking up to the dream
Its like bouncing so high on a trampoline
And I know that there's one thing
Between me and nothing
Baby, you are that ::something:: that pulls me through
So I'm giving it all to you
Giving it all to you

Could it be you and me
Can't stop thinking about
All of the crazy possibilities
I don't want to keep my feelings locked inside
Everytime I see you you just blow my mind

I reach out trusting you there
Its like walking on a high wire into thin air
And I'm waking up to the dream
Its like bouncing so high on a trampoline
And I know that there's one thing
Between me and nothing
Baby, you are that ::something:: that pulls me through
So I'm giving it all to you
I'm giving it

Others have tried to get to me
But I see through them eventually
Cause your the only one that I wanna be with
I'm giving it all to you
I'm giving it all

Everytime I see you all my systems align
You explode on my just like a metorite

And I reach out trusting you there
Its like walking on a high wire into thin air
And I'm waking up to the dream
Its like bouncing so high on a trampoline
And I know that there's one thing
Between me and nothing
Baby, you are that ::something:: that pulls me through
So I'm giving it all to you

I know that there's one thing
I know that there's one thing
Baby you are that something that pulls me trough
So I'm giving it all to you
Giving it all to you

Could it be you and me
Can't stop thinking about

It would me as well, if i hadn't been stalked before. Perhaps a hook or riff in the tune would catch me and sit it well. It takes that sometimes.

We all fall. Don't worry about it too much. Remember, too much for one can often be too much for two, when it's about the psyche.

Exile in Guyville is rough but brilliant. It's a female backlash homage to the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street. "Fuck and Run" ("and I can feel it down in my bones / I'm gonna spend another year alone / fuck and run / fuck and run / even when I was seventeen / fuck and run / fuck and run / even when I was twelve") and "Flower" ("I'll fuck you and your minions, too") are typical of her complete lyrical honesty.

Whip-Smart was a better production piece, and maintained her lyrical integrity "your kisses are as wicked as an M-16 / and you fuck lke a volcano / and you're everything to me". No equivocation or coquettish cuteness there.

After that, she began to sell out and glam out, which, in my opinion, is anything but a sin. "Selling out" is a charge made by little whiny bitches who claim to be fans but have no idea about how hard it is to get into any kind of living when making music that isn't popular. Touring constantly really sucks, folks, I've done it. You don't play big cities, and if you do, it's venues that look a lot more like bars used to a DJ than any kind of performance space. Fun for a short while, but sucks very quickly when you're playing the Comedy Pouch in Possum, Arkansas or some other litany of shitty places in crappy towns across the nation.

So she sold out? So what? She got her name out there and is probably working more consistently and making an easier living than ever. Good for her. If I could write a sappy pop song that made me a million dollars that I had to flog on the Today show or Sa-turd-day Night Live (they actually booked Jessica Simpson, come on!), you bet your ass I'd do it. I'd pay off my debts, bank the rest and teach for the rest of my life. That way, I'd be teaching because I love it and not worrying about money. Sounds good to me. Good for Liz. So she's gotta appear on VH-1 list shows and offer pop culture commentary every once in a while. So what? Good gig.

So all you so-called "purists" whining about sell-outs need to shut up or go try it yourself.

No - it's a simple matter that her earlier stuff rocked, and now she sounds kind of like Avril Lavigne.

Not that that is necessarily a BAD thing, I (personally) don't mind Avril Lavigne.

I just prefer earlier Liz Phair.
