ITS ABOUT TIME!

As an American, I feel that this is a great step for the World Trade Center site, and will make a beautiful addition to Lower Manhatten when completed.

Check out the "Launch" button at that website, for come cool pics. Americans, any thoughts?

Well, Most skyscrapers are indeed eyesours - no creativity or art in it, but it beats the current hole in the ground that is there now.

None of the designs presented were very attractive. Oh well. One more tribute to post-modernist archetechture that will look ugly as all sin.

This, however is monumentally ugly.
http://img.buzznet.com/assets/users8/tinyelvis/flw/large-msg-1123572016-2.jpg

Its supposed to be a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright. Viewed from a distance during the day, its a giant blue pointy penis.

At night, when lit up, it looks kinda cool.

Sorry about not being able to really show it, this is the only photo I could find of it.
Mercury God

Most skyscrapers are ugly by day - little creativity is put in them. I just wonder when geometry became art.

None the less though, I am happy New York will not have that huge void in it anymore.

I still wish that they went with the huge above ground nuclear Missile that would show a huge billboard showing a randome foregin target each day.

That or the one that looks like an upraised finger.

Lets hope they put some AA guns on the new building at least.

The idea of the Huge Finger was the funniest thing I had ever seen (raised my hopes a bit after the attack. Im a slow one, and at first I didnt get it, but then when I saw what it was, I immediatly supported it, and still do.

It's a lot prettier than the hideous WTC towers (I'm sorry about all the people who died, but really, the buildings were uglier than sin), but still a bit too simplistic in my opinion.

Also, it's taller than the Empire State Building (which is not ok with me, I think the Empire State Building should be the tallest, just cause I like it) and its name totally sucks.

it's a cultural thing, 'christian' fanatics think anything beautiful has to be 'satanic', so they think the're doing 'god' and themselves a favor by making everything look like crap and trying to see how many little green pieces of paper they can get out of doing so. becuase where as beauty is to them satanic, rapacious and murderous greed, is appearantly their stairway to saintly 'heavin'.

I beg to differ. The Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are good looking, inside and out, up close and from a distance. Those are just the two I remember off the top of my head. Very pretty buildings, imo.

But as for this ugly, useless Freedom Pile -- I suppose they're still planning to put the parking garage where the memorial for the victims was supposed to have been? Scumbags.

But not to worry -- New Yorkers will soon give it another, more descriptive name, and in about 15 years they'll tear it down and put something else up. It's New York, after all. (This assumes the piece of junk lasts 15 years.)

I disagree. The towers were hideous. "Freedom Tower" isn't quite as ugly. Really though, unless they put up something dazzlingly beautiful, they should just make it a park or something, or a quiet memorial.

I would bomb it if it were worth the work. Why didn't we just do what Mr. Trump said? IF you destroy an anthill, they make an exact copy. The Freedom Tower is such a...stupid idea. It is:
-much smaller(less office space)
-looks more like an ice sculpture
-and doesn't even reach 1776ft on its own(it needs a spire, which I don't count)

I hope it collapses or something and Larry Silverstein dies. :gundge:

I agree. Why don't we build the WTC exactly like it was before? To me it would have been much better then being weak and building something different. What could signal our greatness and give the ultimate fuck you to the terrorists but to build what they knocked down right back up? It would be great to see the Twin Towers back up anyway, they were certainly a presence and this Freedom Tower is nothing compared to the old WTC.

No, I like that. But I would prefer a truly gargantuan structure- a marvel of engineering-something that dwarfs anything else in the world. Something that makes the U.S. home to the tallest building in the world again. Also something that says, "sorry bitches, we're still here! - but you wouldn't be if we wanted to exterminate you" And I would put a children's hospital at the top of it.

Why just Americans? As an Australian I think it is very impressive. I also think it is extremely typical of America. 'Freedom Tower' pfft. A giant shining vanguard towering over the world in the name of American superiority (at least for self-assured Americans). Well of course a couple of generic blocks are going to be space-efficient. As for cooler... they looked pretty square to me. A marvel of engineering doesn't mean much to me if they didn't bother making it look at least decent. They could of at least done something interesting with the roof, making it not so boring and flat.

I thought there were a lot of proposals much better than "Freedom Tower," but the Twin Towers looked like they were designed by a 2 year old with a set of blocks.

And no, the Empire State Building will always symbolize New York to me. Its name sounds much cooler and more grand than either "World Trade Center" or "Freedom Tower," too. If you're going to build something that's going to be the tallest building in a city, it should be fucking beautiful.

Yes, a children's hospital at the top.

Al Qaeda is a PR machine. Why do you think that every time they are out of the news and people stop thinking about them a new video is released by OBL? Because they need to keep up their image. And crazy as they may be, they are know that targeting a children's hospital will be such bad PR that even France will say "Damn, that's fucked up. Ok, we'll stop bitching- you American Yanks can invade, bomb, whatever- just kill them all now."

As a former New Yorker, I'm not really sure I like it. I don't think the building fits with the rest of the city. I would have left the site as it was after the rubble cleared away. We don't need a million foot high blue phallus to commemorate the victims of 9/11.

Another thing is that they planned it to be 1776 feet with the spire counted. come on, this will be meaningless to most of the world because noboby measures using feet anymore, and nobody counts the spire when measuring the height of a building anymore. Its just stupid symbolism.

No; I like the height as well. However, in my esteemed opinion, the twin towers' replacement should be either:

1) Taller than the previous two buildings (or the same height, at 1776 of usuable feet), and/or

2) Build two new towers of the same height or taller, again with 1776 of usuable feet. (one could stand on the top of the old towers with only an antenna above them).
