Ok, before this gets into an iPod-fanboy bashing, let's lay some ground rules:
1. Don't bash someone else's favorite, unless you've actually tried the player.
2. Don't go off topic with some crazy "you're ignorant and i'm right" tangent.
Simple? ok.

To be old school, or simplistic, You Can;t Be my RCA Lyra (256meg internal mem + sd card slot to be more exact) it plays all the music i need at a given time,, easy drag and drop interface to reload both parts of memory (sd card reader // 256 meg flash drive interface,, get 2 nice little drives on my computer when i plug her in) ,, and ya know what,, fitting more music on my player than I can on my car mp3 stereo, is kinda nice. I'd like to own more sd cards (cost prohibitive) so I can swap out cards like I used to on minidisk (3rd gen or so,, could fit around 20 hours of good quality or so on an 80 minute minidisk but that was more than a few years ago so my memory could have messed up) to change styles and content but hell it doesnt take that much time or effort to redo the lists so im happy.

OH MAN, I used to have 256mb Lyra :D. In fact... I still have it somewhere. I don't have the thing to update it anymore, so it has way-outdated j-pop floating around on it, but haha. That mem card is HUGE. Or at least mine was. Totally got that thing in like... 1999.

really that sounds really cool, but how do you download not a computer? ime confused.I can still download from a computer, but besides the USB it also comes with an imput jack and a cord that plugs from it to any speaker jack on another player (mp3 or CD or whatever). You just select 'record' from the menu and you record whatever the source is playing. Great for snagging that obscure track a friend has or the local radio station is playing. I've even rigged it to record some of my old vinyl.

I own the Sony Network Walkman MP3 player. I LOVE this thing. Ive had it for about a year and the quality is fantastic. Sounds much better than iPod. I just wish Sony had more pull in this market, so far they have failed to make a dent due to their SonicStage transfer software which is not very good, but it gets the job done.

Ive also used the Creative zen and the Toshiba Gigabeat kicks iPods ass.
iPods are for the ignorant masses of idiots who will buy the most popular crap just because everyone "has to have one". There is a lot of good quality alternatives to iPod out there, but most consumers are just too stupid to ask for alternatives. ( Fucking sheep ) BBAAAAAAAAAAHH:upyours:

iPods aren't that bad, they're just not great.
My brothers both have iPods, and haven't had any complaints. Unless you're an audiophile you won't notice the difference is sound quality, and the interface is pretty nice.
Still, my Zen was cheeper and holds more. :D
My iPod (Video, 30 GB, Black) ought to be delivered any day now, and I'm really looking forward to using it. I just couldn't find another MP3 player that had everything I wanted and needed in it, and I've known a lot of people who were very happy with their iPods.

Well, not everyone downloads music for the heck of it. I have a good 6 GB of just MP3s on my laptop here, but I've listened to every one of them. I download a lot at a time (Whole albums and such; once I downloaded every Final Fantasy soundtrack released to date) and then delete the files I don't want to listen to ever again, or that are doubles, etc. I just enjoy having a variety of music.
20 GB of storage also means you can store lots of files (Can anyone say, back up pretty much all the necessary stuff on your computer, ladies and gents?) as well as transfer files from one computer to another if you don't have them hooked up on a network. That's a very nice capability, IMHO.

I had a Phillips 4 Gig player last year. It died, the software was feckin awful and it was a nightmare to use as a portable hard drive.
So I went and got an iPod mini 4GB. No worries, nice and easy to use, sounds ok, not brilliant though. But it does everything I want it to, so I'm perfectly happy with it. Mines also very durable (it got droped into Lake Constance and worked fine :D), so no worries about dropping it there.
I've had a play about with Sony's and Creative Zens since then, and they are a better product, but until my ipod dies i'm not going to go get one, the leap in quality isn't massive enough to warrent it.

The last person I talked to downloaded music for the sake of downloading, not because she liked it.My player currently has about 12 gigs of music in it - entire collections by some bands and artists are what make up the bulk of that. Mostly they're ripped from CDs I already owned before the player, and I have listened to them all at one point or another since putting them on.
My collection is growing, too. I always hear songs and think, "yeah, I must get hold of that one".

Yup, I've got 20GB of music on my HDD and I've still got the majority of my music collection on CD's. I've only got a 4GB iPod, but thats ok as I can select the stuff and rotate it easily enough. Once it dies and I need a new one i'll be looking at one with a larger HDD though.

I must say I like my iPod nano (2GB)
I must say finally making a sensible product Apple has managed to do a good impression on the public opinion. I mean, at least around here, despite Apple's nice design, absolutely no-one even had an Apple laptop before iPods began getting popular. Tabletops, now they're still pretty much useless (although definitely nicer to look at than PCs), but laptops have definitely been getting more popular in the last few years

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra (40GB). The one problem I have with it is that the protective case makes it rather bulky...even if it does mean I can drop it down the stairs with absolutely no damage whatsoever. It's got plenty of space, so I can have a shitload of music on it, which means I can always find something I want to listen to (I had a 4GB mp3 player before, and I frequently found myself thinking 'I don't want to listen to anything on here').
I'm rather pissed off at the moment, as my ext. hard drive is refusing to work...with >30GB of music on it. Any ideas to fix it (apart from percussive maintenance)? It just makes a glitchy whirring noise when I plug it in, rather than the smooth whirr it would normally make.

I don't have an MP3 player, but my new Palm Tungsten E2 plays MP3s and I am working on getting a bigger SD card, so that I can carry more songs with me, I found a 2gig card, which should suffice for a while, I can probably get it in a few weeks, right now I got the measly 128mb and it sucks, it holds about 20 songs, so I have to be way more selective than I want to be.

Try hitting it gently once or twice, then plug it back in and see. Sometimes things get knocked out of place slightly and a little smack fixes 'em right up. Kinda like some kids, that way. If it doesn't work, hit it a little harder. Just use your discretion and don't break it completely when you lather, rinse, repeat. :D
