No music just sucks in this day an age. Everything is popular crap and so people expect nothing good out of music. Don't worry, something coherant will come out of underground music soon and turn everything on it's ear. That said, Punk is probably played out for this wave, so even underground stuff will become more obscure until the next one starts.

I know its kinda played out and I was more into grunge when I was a teen but having to explain a movement like that is nuts. For the moment to all in the US I have to apologise from this side of the atlantic for James *(l)unt. There is some great stuff out over here but trying to get airplay against the large companies is difficult.I usualy go to three or four gigs a week so I have seen this..

I "know" who the sex pistols are, however, I haven't listened to them. The other day though, I picked up 7th Son of a 7th son.
I really should get more of them.... expensive cds though.

No, you're just dealing with a less musical person than you. Remember, Punk started before you were born, so you have always looked at it retrospectively.

I disagree. I think that the last ten years have been some of the best ever for music. Just not mainstream music.

Sorry, you meant to say "the bad modern music made these days is the country music and some rock", didn't you?
It's OK if you don't know how to spell "bad", but "good" wouldn't really work in that sentence.

word they use round here to describe some little skater/goth kid who's obviously too young to really "get" the scene and is generally just doing that kind of thing to look cool or fit in with friends... like a 12 year old wearing a slipknot hoodie, wearing baggy jeans and carrying a skateboard... nothing really specific. possibly the precursor to the whole "emo" thing you see these days (was a word we used to use about 4 or 5 years back)

Wish I had the answer to that question myself, I love classic rock as well. At least rock has a good beat and feel to it, rap has none of that. I guess we could blame it on aging, younger parents probably not tuning to the classic rock stations much. I grew up on Long Island so I have big interest in classic rock, most popular stations around here are classic rock.
But none of them could really play...;)
And the Sex Pistols could? :p
You're not musically old because you listen to 20 year old music. I listen to classical almost exclusively and the most recent classical I enjoy is already 100 years old. I really don't bother with recent music as it's all become about image and coolness. The music itself is mostly crap, to be blunt. It sells because they market it with teenagers in skimpy clothing and expensive make up.

Heh, I'm not even sure what "getting the scene" is... I just buy metal on CDs... (or get CDs free with magazines).

i don't know - getting the idea or point behind the music, maybe? being too young to know how shit life really is (and why listening to metal helps heheh)? don't know, it was always vague (and something of an insult)

I don't listen to a lot of classical music (other than a couple of OperaMania CDs from my voice teacher), but I'll admit that it's a lot better than almost all contemporary music. If nothing else, it's certainly complex.
Despite listening to certain contemporary musicians (most of my favourites performed in the 1980's), I refuse to acknowledge any pop singer as talented. I spend hours each week working to develop a strong classical voice, which is a difficult and highly disciplined process. Not only do I sing, I also go on jogs and monitor my diet as part of training. The screeching or belting that pop/rock singers has nothing on Opera.
Don't you people realize that this "Modern music is crap!" argument is as irrelevant as the whole God thing that plagues this forum? Music comes and goes in fads. When you classic rock fanatics were kids the older generation thought all of your music was crap and that it would be forgotten in a few years. Obviously, it hasn't, and yes, classic rock as a genre will be remembered for a great deal longer than most modern music, but that's because its all original, without much prior inspiration to work off of. Modern rock, on the other hand, is a mix of the leftovers from that era mixed with some half-hearted attempts at forcing new styles into existence. Just remember - there were plenty of bands that didn't make it big when you were kids, too. The only reason you're so threatened by the 'crap' that everyone seems to listen to is because your generation kick started the music industry, so everything is more accessible, in more variety to everyone. Besides, why do we all have to listen to 'timeless' music? So we listen to some crap (and in some cases a LOT of crap), why do you have to hound us for it? Why are we required to be fully versed in your era? Yes, it was historically important, but that doesn't mean we have to abandon today's fads. Because somewhere in those fads we'll find something enduring.

Not at all; so long as you define contemporary correctly (my favourite band formed before I was born by around 23 years, and released its last album I know of when I was 6/7, but last performed this year); however one must admit that some contemporary music is damn good.
