Internet - Information or Misinformation?

The older folk are always saying how lucky young people are to be in the internet generation, where you can find a literature reference in a matter of clicks instead of a poring over an index in a library.
This convenience comes with its downside. Noise is prolific - unverifiable rumors, outdated info, hate sites, phish sites and my favorite: spoof sites. As a source of knowledge, do you think the internet has been mainly a tool for information or misinformation?
As an related topic of discussion - what makes a Net-savvy user different from a easily-misled novice?

-I've never heard that.
Misleading people is fun and funny.
Net-savvy need a kick in the shins, the easily-misled need a bullet.

I think it has largely been a tool of information. People are just idiots for taking the spoofs seriously.
Anyways, a net-savvy user is someone who is cycnical of what they are reading to the point of paranoia. They know that if a recommendation for a product sounds like it is urgent then the creater of the ad wanted the person to pay for it before they realise how stupid it is.
What? No joke option? I hope you suffer for this! Single choice, too? How, am I to muck up the results.

Yeah and not multi-choice.

Xislakilinia,
The "older folk" of which you speak grew up in a time when people sold poisonous radioactive heavy metals as a health tonic. They grew up in a time where if there was light grey ink on the white paper contract you signed, you were bound to the terms. They lived there lives in a world where it was legal to defraud people of their money. The Internet compared to the world that was is a paragon of honesty, and integrity, with all the porn our grandparents could have ever dreamed of. Their parents in turn had to survive a world where companies were allowed to put cocaine and lithium salts in soft drinks.
Quibbling over just how accurate Wikipedia is in comparison to Britanica in the context of that! Yeah.... Hard to impugn the character of the internet in that light, Tijuana donkey porn or no.
Be careful on the internet. They can see you :upyours:

Just like trying to find stuff out in RL.
The only difference is that on the internet it is faster.

dunno. I'm gonna go with option 3, but leave out the explaination.
The Internet is a major source of information. It makes it very easy to find unfiltered info. However, it's also easy for any fool, scam artist, or loon to post their "info". Having the info out there is a plus, but you still have to seperate the good stuff from the junk.
The internet can certainly be an excellent source of information, so long as you are capable of making heads and tails of the millions of files, sorting out the true knowledge from the bullshit.
"Above two categories are not mutually exclusive because [insert philosophical reason here]. Blah."
And my philosophical reason is... the Internet contains both. Isn't that obvious?

It's the same way when doing research at your local library in real life. Depending on what you're looking for and where you look you'll either get the nuclear physics book, Spiderman comic books or Granny's pie cookbook.
Just do the same crossreferenzing that'd be expected for papers in real life as well and use reliable sources and you really should be fine.

One part of the internet is for entertainment, the second for pure information (ex: Wikipedia), and the last part for ultra-liberal bitchfest (ex: NS forums).

Well, it's not exactly...umm...realistic, usually. So I'd say misinformation, but then, who cares?
