Hey do you know about those poor graphic 2d commando war games. Why do people play those? I mean the advanced 3d ones are better in many respects.

because the old school games are sentimental?

that could be it... I think it has something more to do with advertizing. If it wasn't for advertizing games like runescape would be out of business. What is it that old games have on their covers that make people want to play them?

i think it's sentimentality and the fact that they're simple, cheap, throwaway fun. like doom is awesome fun for a quick game if your just kicking your heels between other things you've got to do. or that one that preceded doom with the nazis in the castle - something like 'steppenwolff castle' but not.

Possibly because better graphics do not always equate to better content and gameplay. Heck, the game I play most these days is a roguelike called ADOM which has a purely ASCII display.

What about games like the first Command and Conquer Red Alert? They're advanced yet the graphics are terrible and the unit dialogue is really cheezy.

The commando games were AWSOME!!! I used to spent hours just figuring out how to get past difficult areas.

Yeah, Wolfenstein, I played a again a few weeks ago. Doom I, red alert, etc etc.

I play games to get away from life. Life sucks. Virtual life rules.

Either nostalgia or sentimentality. Or they're one of those jerks that say they like the Rolling Stones and Greenday(but they think American Idiot is their fisrst album) and nostalgia but really don't. I don't know why I like them but I think...

No... don't know....

Huh. Still manage to get them mixed up.

*goes to rearrange music liberry*

Edit: I know what it was now.. the 'wild' in both threw me off. Meh, at least I didn't confuse it with 'Wild wild West'

Graphics in games are generally of secondary importance to their playability. Red Alert is good fun to play in both the range and simplicity of how you can do it.

Where more recent, advanced games fall slack is they tend to make things excessively complex that on one level allows for more to do, but on another detracts from the ability to just sit down and play for a while. Older games still provide that level of straightforward fun that isn't matched by the current trend in production.

Mmmhm. :) Although complexity is good when done well.

In other news, the best game ever:

Some of the older games are simply more fun. A lot of new games lack ingenuity, are overly complex, or just rehashes of old stuff.

War Inc. was awesome.

But I FINALLY got it figured out and then a HUGE scratch appeared on the CD

needless to say, I figured it out and then couldn't play it. and no one seems to have it in the stores I go to. not surprising, considering I picked it up at the dollar store or something o_O
