okay, just got back from getting my new tattoo (got it done at Chameleon by Rueben...this probably only means something to SD)

Anyway, I have had my eyebrow pierced for a few years, have had my ears pierced at 10g for about 6 months, and have had this tattoo for a few days over a year now:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/zbronto/P1010013.jpg

Just got this one today:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/zbronto/P4260029.jpg

the colors in both those pics are off a little bit. They were taken right after the process was done, so the bright colors will fade and dark colors will get brighter.

Anyway, who has tattoos/piercings? Who's appreciates the art? Who's against them? Basically, whatever you think about body art, say it here.

Gyaah!

The most I'd personally do would be one earring, in my right ear. That's it. I have nothing against people with body art and what have you, though oftentimes it scares me due to freakiness.

I love it, however it's not condusive to the professional career I intend to follow. However, over the summer I am having both an ear and lip piercing.

Any ideas for UNIQUE, CONTEMPORARY and ALTERNATIVE tatoos would be appreciated.

I like your tatts esp the new one....

I don't have any, it's illegal to get them here, and when I lived in a state where it wasn't I was pregnant.

I made a promise to my mom when I was 4 that if I would wait until I was 25 to get one, and only if I still wanted the same one in the same place that I wanted when I was 4. I do, and will be making the big drive to Texas next year to get it.

I have peirced ears, but they are closed up, I am still pissed that my mom peirced them when I was a baby without my permission. I won't let my kids get earrings until they are old enough to deal with the cleaning and changing themselves and plan to make them sign a paper that it was their idea and not mine.

I got my tongue peirced in the 8th grade without my mom's permission, and had to take it out to continue in school, was mad though since I got expelled 4 days later anyway and wasn't allowed to re-peirce it (yeah, I went through a stupid kid time too)

I don't have any tattoos, and the only "piercings" I have are pretty run of the mill - my ears, and the cartilage in my left ear. Probably the only other thing I'd consider getting pierced is my navel, but I go back and forth on that so much I'll probably never get it done. I think tattoos look cool on other people to a certain extent (I don't like the way it looks when someone is absolutely covered in tattoos), but I wouldn't ever get one. I'm too scared of needles, and the whole idea of what it'd look like when I'm 80 is a pretty good deterrent for me. :p

As for unique, contemporary, and alternative, I've drawn the two I have right now, so they're unique. as for a style, I like mixing them all together...look at african, european, asian, and oceanic styles, then meld them together. The blend of different styles and cultures can really look amazing. I personally really like (and am considering getting) a true tribal black background (ie not the neotribal of armbands and such) with japanese style snake and flowers in bright colors

haha.

I called my congress guy about trying to legalize it, I think it's dangerous and crazy that it's illegal now. Oh, there are places to get them, but they are unregulated backroom places, I shudder to think what kinds of diseases are getting passed around because of this idiotic law.

I'm seriously considering getting a Celtic-knot type dragon on my shoulder, but just a little one, smaller than the palm of my hand. My best friend is an amazing artist, and she designed Celtic-knot bunnies for a 'draw a Celtic knot' project in art class in high school, so I'm trying to get up the courage to ask her to design a dragon for me. Then again, she's trying to sort out going to university for a double major (Art and English) starting next year, so I'm wondering if I should, plus she lives halfway across the country from me. xD

be careful with celtic knots...they're very intricate, and so pretty hard to tattoo. For example, mine was as small as the guy would do it, and still had to have a few changes (such as making the small spaces solid black). Drawing with a pencil is much easier than a tattoo gun. I would just suggest a consultation first. They can design you something that looks amazing and they'll be able to do at no extra cost, not to mention, it gives you a chance to scope out the artist.

I have 14 tatoot's (and not just things saying "the plane! then plane!)

14. In my own strange Jewish/Muslim way, I've figured out how to rebel against the mighty JEHOVAH .. .and that's to get images cut into your skin. :D

Fortunately, I'm religiously Buddistl, so suffering under the needle is a prime example to us.

In short, yes, I have many tattoos. If you don't, then get cut. The human body was meant to be decorated.

bold could not be more true. I look at it as a canvas. And dammit, I want mine pretty!

I've never understood the piercing/tattoo ban...Yes, it says your body is a temple and not to desecrate it, but tattoos and piercings don't desanctify it. even the most simplistic church or temple has decorations.

I have three tattoos (all fairly hidden, as a soon to be doctor I don't think my patients would appreciate lots of tattoos and piercings) and I have my ears pierced in the lobe of each ear.

I used to have an industrial piercing in my left ear, my navel, my tongue and another piercing. All of which have been removed except my ear lobes.

Right, I have no tats, and 5 rings in the ears. (1 upper cart on left, two lobe's on each) I am considering letting them heal over, since I'm pretty active in both Judo and Fencing- which makes peircings a hassle and a danger, and due to my job- in which i make more money when the rich old people like me.
I'll prolly get a tat someday, when i feel the urge, and decide what exactly I want. I know that I want tribal or knot, just not sure what.

My sis, whom i take example from, has Om Mani Padre Hum (sp?) in the original tibetan on one shoulder, another mantra in aramaic on the other. She also has a large celtic knotwork Ahnk (Anhk?) with the traditional chineese simbol for eternity in the certer oval-y part (that symbol being solid black)

I say going traditional is safe, but in no way is required. Just think things through.

As a counter-example: one woman I know got a tat spur-o-the-moment. It was a dolphin diving into her bellybutton, colored. The problem? She wanted kids. Stretching, shrinking, Stretch marks, and by the end maybe even a c-section? Thats gonna turn into a whale, into an alligator,, into a taxidermy gone wrong.

That still cracks me up, that getting a tattoo is illegal in Oklahoma. One of my best friends grew up in Stillwater--she's in Salt Lake now, which, she says, is no great improvement.

I have a couple of tats, not sure how many, as I tend to get more then one done at a time so yeah. Most of my tats support my political views. I have a Norwegian WWII nazi party flag along with 14 words on my left upper arm, a Deathshead with flaming swastikas for eyes, I am getting HATE on my inside lower lip on saturday, I have a tat for the skinhead crew I am in on my leg, and some other ones. I also have designs for full sleeves that I just need to find the time to start, and I have a design for my leg that I need to get done in the next month or two. It is a Viking longboat on the see waging war against an enemy. I also have a backpiece and chest piece I want to get done before I turn 22

I gave some thought to the next generation of body art. See, most body art was seen as unusual, rebellious and even slightly offensive until it became the accepted norm. So, considering that people now have murals done all over their body and/or carry around more hardware in their flesh than Robocop, one has to wonder where 'extreme' can go from here.

I have a couple possibilities:

First, now that brain cancer has been disproven as a side-effect of cellphones, it's time for someone to get one implanted into their head. DOn't look at me like I'm crazy! I am, but not about this! It's just a matter of time before someone has the side of his skull etched out, strengthened with carbon fiber and the electronic components of a cellphone implanted into his head.

However, that's too practical and non-artistic.

So my second possibility is: Elective amputations.

Yes. Soon, somebody is going to have the smallest joint of their left pinkie removed and replaced with a gold stud. That'll open the floodgates. That'll begin the art of 'Body Modification'. People will get their skin dyed red, artificial horns implanted under their scalp(I understand this has been done already) and a prehensile cybernetic tail attached to their ass. Others will have elf-ears. SOmebody, somewhere will find a way to attach a second penis.

It's the future, people. Yet people will call ME the crazy one for thinking of it first. :p

I know, too complicated is bad. I'd only be looking to get the outline of the 'rope', and it's only going to be a small dragon, so it wouldn't be that complicated. Her knot bunnies were adorable, though. If I couldn't get a simplified dragon, I'd probably ask her to draw me one of the bunnies. xD

My parents freaked when I got my first tattoo (a rather large butterfly in between my shoulder blades) when i was 21 and still living at home. Now, I have a tie-dyed tribal work design around that butterfly, a butterfly on my right lower leg and a rather large tatoo of a rose with the infinity symbol and fire and water around it that i got for my wedding (my husband is into tattoos too) I have have an eyebrow ring, and presently, I have a sall purple stud in my left nostril.

as for piercings, i am all for it AS LONG as they aren't all oozy and nasty. when someone else has an infected lip ring or something like that it just grosses me out.

tattoos are competely mainstream now, but I still think that if you get them for a meaning, for a reason, the more props to yah. everytime i look at all my tattoos, i can tell you when, were, the state of mind i was in, and why i got them. they are somewhat of a story of my life.

i plan on getting one more in October, after I defend, of the catalyst that is basically what is getting me my PhD. The guys we go to are very good friends of ours, so we get fantastic work cheap and with whatever creative liscense we want. they are completely addicting, but i must force myself to stop soon, i don't want to have more ink than my husband. Maybe I will post pics when i am at home later, they (the tatts) are really cool, IMHO.

Currently have two piercings in upper left ear, one tongue stud, and one tattoo on the inside of my left wrist.

I used to have more piercings, but I let them close over. I really like getting piercings, and I usually like how they look on other people, but I think my features just aren't suited to many facial piercings.

I like body modification. I am extremely attracted to people with good body art, though I am totally turned off by menu tattoos.

ears pierced at 10g
 *knows shit all about piercings* :P

Haven't ever thought about it that much but it really depends on the person and tattoo/piercing.. That's incredibly vague but true :P

I mean, I used to think all people with their eyebrows pierced looked like prats because all the people I'd seen with it did look like prats. But some people really suit them and look good with them (you're included with that btw, heh).
Some other piercings (like down the sides of ears) can look trashy (on some girls especially) or just totally out of place... but they can look really good.

Tattoos are similar. They suit some people and don't suit others.

I don't really think there's something I can pinpoint that makes them look good or bad. I think it depends a lot upon the reasoning (or assumed reasoning) behind getting the tattoo/piercing - if it's to look "hard" or to be an oh-so-cool "rebel"... I tend to think the person's an idiot.

Hard to judge your tattoos when seeing them without the "context" of your whole body and face... but I'd say you're the kinda person who suits them and I like the actual tattoos *nods*

Personally, I quite like the idea of tattoos, but I think I'm too much of a wimp to get a tattoo :P Plus, there'd be the whole traumatic ordeal of overcoming indecisiveness and choosing which tattoo and where it'd go... and with a decision that lasts all your life, it's even harder than the day-to-day decisions which are already hard enough for me, heh. There's also the fact that I really don't like the idea of being old old with tattoos. It can work fine on men when they age but on women... not so much IMO.
Piercing wise, have my ears pierced once on the lobes. Can't really imagine getting any more 'cause I just don't think they'd suit me at all. If I had a nice toned stomach, I'd perhaps consider a belly-button piercing...

They suit some people and don't suit others.

haha...well, I think Europe uses a different system than America (surprise surprise...) 10g isn't huge, but the standard for ear lobes is 16 (the smaller the number, the bigger the hole). A 10g can fit a coffee stirrer through. Yes, people have drank beer through my ear.

I'm glad you like my eyebrow ring. It was my first journy into the whole body art thing. then I got a tattoo and decided those are more fun. Piercings for me are just for decoration. Tattoos always have some level of meaning for me, same as any piece of art. Maybe this summer I'll get a picture of me shirtless at the beach or something and you can see them more or less in context. I really do wonder how they'll look when I'm old.

I was actually talking to my piercer when I got my ears done (she was being followed for a newspaper article that day, so we were talking about body mod/art with the reporter) and she pointed out that tattoos have become somewhat mainstream. The thing of our generation are stretched piercings, such as an earring that you can stick your finger through.

If you ask me, the next level are inserts...these used to be common in africa, where you make an incision and slip something inside of it. they made necklace like things. Lemme see if I can find a pic...

mreh. can't find any. I'll keep looking. They're pretty cool, and I might consider a necklace one instead of a necklace tattoo (theres only so much space you can get inked, sadly.)

Well, i'm sure they were done tastefully. Perhaps they can even be displayed tastefully?

I like tattoos. Don't have one yet. My girlfriend doesn't exactly like the idea, but I think I can talk her round to being ok with it. I kinda want one of a wolf howling at the moon on my shoulder. Maybe eventually if I get married to my girlfriend (see no reason not to, we've been together a year and half) in a few years, I'll get one of two wolves howling at the moon.

Any ideas for UNIQUE, CONTEMPORARY and ALTERNATIVE tatoos would be appreciated.

I don't think that was ever said in any of the Star Wars movies but, it sounded great to me at the time...probably cuz' I'm drunk! Oh well!

Am I the only one here who has a brand? (A symbol or patern burnt into ones skin) It's just above my left elbow. It's four centimeters high and 2 broad. It's a dubleedged sword that is pointed upwads on a arch (that is suposed to be the sun) with five spikes on it

Depending on where you get it, and what size you get, it's really not that bad at all. A friend got one on the back of his shoulder and reported that it felt like if you got a sunburn and then trailed your fingernails over it...not exactly a fun feeling, but not really that bad.

Plus, there'd be the whole traumatic ordeal of overcoming indecisiveness and choosing which tattoo and where it'd go... and with a decision that lasts all your life, it's even harder than the day-to-day decisions which are already hard enough for me, heh.

When I thought that I had finally found a design I wanted for my tattoo, I used a magic marker to sketch it on myself in the area I thought I wanted it. I made sure to keep it re-traced after showering and everything. I did this for a year. After a year of seeing the "tattoo" on myself, and after a year of never once regretting it, I knew I was ready to have it inked permanently.

There's also the fact that I really don't like the idea of being old old with tattoos. It can work fine on men when they age but on women... not so much IMO.

Gotta disagree on that one. One of the hottest people I've ever met was a woman who got her first tattoo on her 50th birthday. She's got two full arms done now, and is working on a full body suit, and it looks SMASHING. It actually makes her look much younger than she would otherwise, since age can change the appearance of your skin but tattoos tend to conceal that sort of thing (what with all the colored ink in your skin, and all :)).

I have a friend with one on the back of his neck...that could not have felt good...

I don't know if I could do it...I can deal with needles, but a severe burn just seems like it would be painful. Not something I rule out of the future tho.

actually, while I was looking for pictures of the scarification, I came across this (http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2005/11/20/21c_eye_wideweb__470x299,0.jpg).

its a piece of jewelery inserted into the eye. I think it looks pretty cool, although, I want more control over what I get instead of relatively mass produced pieces of jewelery. Heres the article (http://www.theage.com.au/news/business/dressing-up-the-windows-to-the-soul/2005/11/20/1132421532581.html) about it

Ah, okay - thanks.
Yeah, I know some people with piercings like that - only ones I know are prats so I've had that tainted in my mind... but now I know you have it, I know at least one decent person to untaint it :P

Looking at tattoos this way is fairly new to me - I just haven't met enough people with tattoos or encountered them enough. But I do much prefer the idea of tattoos that have meaning to you and are more like art.

If you ask me, the next level are inserts...these used to be common in africa, where you make an incision and slip something inside of it. they made necklace like things. Lemme see if I can find a pic...

Ah, see, just hearing about that (and seeing the picture you posted with the eye) makes me shudder... then again, as you say, that's probably just because it's so new and unheard of in our culture and society that it immediatly seems "wrong" in my head.

When I thought that I had finally found a design I wanted for my tattoo, I used a magic marker to sketch it on myself in the area I thought I wanted it. I made sure to keep it re-traced after showering and everything. I did this for a year. That makes a lot of sense and is a really good idea...

Well, when I said old old I did mean a lot older than 50.
But I guess I just need to meet the right person!
