I thought this was cool and the first I heard about it was last night on PBS, so I figured I'd share it.

It detects possible collisions and warns you first, then if you dont do anything it will apply the brakes itself.
Won't be too long before they are completely driving themselves. I can't wait - that means no more designated drivers - woohoo! :D

Mercedes are working on a similar system. They had an automatic breaking system quite a few years ago, but not as complex as this.
But this article was written in 2003.

Neat! I had heard about this some time ago. It's like the Ground Proximity Warning System that planes carry. I wonder how many people will try to test it.

Just what your car needs, another piece of power-needy electronics.

But DWI laws mean people use public transport more.

Yeah I just noticed this was an '03 article. I bet it is much improved by now. I wonder if it just deals with cars as the article says or will it warn you if you are about to run into a house or large animal as well?
I wonder if this will have any impact on car insurance for it.

Good point! But yer not even supposed to be drunk in public right?

Nah, you can be drunk in public here.
Hell, they even lay on free public transport on New Years for the boozehounds, so as to avoid DWI.

Improved or thrown out after realizing it brakes in the middle of traffic and will cause more accidents than it will prevent.

Yeah here in Vegas you can be drunk in public, but many places don't allow it. Still, having a car that can drive you home if you are innebriated sounds awesome to me. *can't wait for the future*
Oh and flying cars!!!!! Weren't those supposed to be available in 2008 or something?

No there was a commercial about it coming out next year I believe. Anyway it says that it detects rear collisions too.
Merc have had something like that for quite a while.
I remember seeing on Top Gear a video of when Merc first showed it to journalists.
Guy gets in, drives towards object.
Car fails to react. Car crashes.
In front of the world's motoring journalists.

Yeah, all in the mist too, so all you see is a car dissappear then 'SMASH!'
Broken merc...

True, but I'd settle for more buses after midnight.

If you believe Back to the Future, they should have been everywhere last year.

Damn movies being false prophets!
OH I guess they were just hoping the Skycar would be certified for flight by 2008: http://www.wfmynews2.com/scitech/article.aspx?storyid=58590
I thought I read somewhere a couple years ago that they would be available in the Neman Marcus catalog by then or something.

I think it should take over as many controls as possible to bring the car to a safe resting point - unless you turn it off because you dont trust it or something.
I met a guy who used to program fighter jets who said that the jets would do a lot (if not all) of work when it came to evasive maneuvering during a threat encounter. neat

I hate stuff like that. They literally fight you for control. It's horrible.
That Skycar thing though...I should buy stock in that company.
It sounds like one more electronic doohicky to go wrong.
The safer they make cars the more risks people take.
I can just imagine people driving faster and expecting the car to keep them safe.... and then demanding money from the car companies when it does not!
However the car will have to pretty clever to spot road conditions in the breaking zone to predict require stopping time.
However on the plus side my classic car will be able to force other cars out of the way as they will stop (safely) when I squeeze past or in front of them!! :D
