Ahmadinejad said something that made me like him just a little bit.

Now allow me to say a few words to the people of Germany and Austria. Look at the atmosphere in the world today. See how those who purport to promote human rights and democracy actually want to run the world. Sixty years ago a war took place, and 60 million people were killed by both sides. If we had any power in those days, we would have prevented this carnage. To the best of our ability we would not have allowed such a massacre. Sixty years have passed since that war, and the people of Palestine are still paying the price for a war in which they did not participate. The people of today's Germany are paying reparation for a war in which they themselves did not participate.

My question is the following: Let's assume that 60 years ago a certain regime in Germany started a certain war, and certain crimes were committed. Three generations later - what is the fault of the current German generation that it must be so humiliated? Why can't it play an independent role in international relations? They are constantly being reminded that their parents were criminals. Monuments are built there. All countries build monuments for things that they are proud of, and when tourists come, they show them these monuments. Over there, they build monuments, and every German who passes by a park is constantly reminded: "Look, you are the son of criminals, and you must be humiliated."

[...]

In culture, science, and international politics, Germany should have a prominent standing. But 60 years later, they are still held prisoner by a handful of people, who themselves had planned all the events of that era. Now they say that no one is allowed to talk about or research this event. Why not research it?

...did Kievan-Prussia just say something I agree with?! Not that I agree with the idea of Jews leaving Israel or anything, because that's just idiotic. What I agree with is the unreasonable stigma bit. It's especially virulant in Hollywood. Whenever Germans are portrayed, they are either Nazis or Neo-Nazis, pretty much. Hell, even in fucking STAR TREK that's all they're portrayed as. You never see a German as anything else. It's sickening. The Germans of today have no association with Hitler anymore than my little brother Andrew Jackson has any association with the President Andrew Jackson(who, by the way, was an ass when it came to Native American treatment.)

They are?
Yes. Perhaps not directly. Certainly not the typical kind of reperation one thinks of. But in terms of how they are accepted--or rather, not accepted--by most societies.

Lets say some country other than Finland paid is war debts to the US off...
Shock! Gasp!
:P

Anyway, Germans are portrayed as things other than nazi's. I read a book where one was a terrorist once.

Well ok, some odd midlifer still whines about their grandfather's bike being stolen, but really, no one takes much notices of them anyway.

<snip apologist president's comments>Is this what he said? Must be in response to being offered a trip to a concentration camp historical site when he wants to come visit for the world cup. To be honest, the only party that's giving him a warm welcome is the neo-nazi party.

Oh, guess what else he said:
Although they claim that their hearts bleed for the Jews, during World War II and following it they caused the widespread phenomenon of anti-Judaism in two or three European countries. If you support the Jews - how do you explain this anti-Judaism? Why did you turn Europe in its entirety into a place unsafe for the Jews? Could there possibly be another reason than creating unsafe conditions for the Jews, so they would flee and find shelter in Palestine? He's grasping straws there.

I think it's far more important that the whole world, including germany, remembers things like this and does their best to make sure they don't happen again.

I would be far more worried about the idea of forcing people out of their homes in Israel.

Your boy Ahmadinejad has been trying to pick a fight since he got into office, IMHO. He incites racial hatred, he is agressively increasing military spending, he want's more power - I see a lot of similarities between him and a certain Austrian with a toothbrush moustache.

But in terms of how they are accepted--or rather, not accepted--by most societies. It's the government and companies involved in exploiting the holocaust that are paying. Technically, Germans are paying with their taxes. However, the individual burden is minimal.

Really. Shows what I thought I knew. =/

As a German, how do you feel about how Germans are treated in American media, out of curiosity?

I think he is refering to a time when Fox "news" went on a bender because Germany passed on Iraq.....Well, I try not to watch Faux news. The only anti-German propaganda I've seen lately was a little thing on German history on StrategyPage. Rather misguided, but I suppose then again so is calling a Belgian product "Freedom Fries" out of protest against the French. :D
