A CONTROVERSIAL US Church has attacked a noted Irish poet and branded Ireland a "land of sodomite dandies".

Kildare-based poet Desmond Egan's poem 'Understanding God Too Quickly in Topeka' ridicules the Kansas Church, which encourages members to 'celebrate' deaths of US soldiers in Iraq.

The poem drew the ire of Westboro Baptist Church's leader, Fred Phelps (76), as it accuses the Church, based in Topeka, Kansas, of having a 'flea philosophy'.

A bid is under way in the US to ban the Church from picketing the funerals of soldiers in the US, using anti-homosexual banners. It holds its protests because it believes US troops died defending 'homosexual nations' - Afghanistan and Iraq. The Church is notorious for running a website, godhatesfags.com, outlining beliefs that nearly every human tragedy is linked to homosexuality.

Preacher Phelps this week told the Irish Independent he still had his eye on Mr Egan, who wrote some "mean stuff" about his Church. "The Bible says that the only thing worse than a fag is a fag enabler," he claimed. "He is pushing the fag agenda in his poems and he is on his way to hell."

Mr Phelps accused Mr Egan, who is married with children, of being "a fag in denial". However, "to be fair" to Mr Egan, a winner of the American National Poetry Foundation Award, he was not the only one.

"Ireland is a land of sodomite dandies since it joined the EU, although it is not quite as bad as Sweden yet," he said.

Mr Egan said: "They have posters that say things like 'God laughs when a gay dies'. It's really awful stuff."

I don't understand how Afghanistan and Iraq are Homosexual nations.

I suggest all these religious types go to these countries largest cities on a saturday night and yell out "I THINK YOU LOT ARE A BUNCH OF ARSE BANDITS!", and soon get proved entirely wrong - or better yet get proved entirely right.

Sounds to me like this Egan fellow is quite the decent man. Phelps shows his typical hypocrisy, railing about how Egan is demeaning him and his church while simultaneously spreading his bullshit everywhere.

Phelps and others like him often drag the entire world into their delusions. They hope to make everyone else think the way they do. Me, I want everyone to see things like I do too: always seen all sides of an issue, only judging someone based on the content of their character, not discriminating against anyone, being scientific and curious, being joyful, caring about everyone, etc. etc.

In fact, everyone is like that. It's up to you to pick whom you would wish to think like.

I heart Phelps. People like him are glowing examples of what homophobia and bigotry really are. We have far too many slick spokesmen who make racism or homophobia or mysogeny seem like fair and reasonable positions. We have way too many people who think that bigotry is okay as long as it is pursued for "religious" or "spiritual" reasons. It's terrific to have somebody like Phelps around to put an honest face on what these stances really mean.

Just wanted to toss in my two cents' worth.

These protesters are an example of what happens when rights are abused. With every right comes a responsibility to use that right in a mature and intelligent way.

I'm a religious conservative, and I think I speak for the vast majority of religious conservatives when I say that this sort of stuff is WAY out of line. I've seen pictures of these rallies. Little kids and teens with hate slogans all around them. These kids are being brainwashed to be just as stupid and overbearing as the "adults" around them.

No, the deaths of soldiers should NEVER be celebrated, regardless of your politics. God hates nobody. And it is NOT for them or anybody else to decide who's going to hell.
