Job Help

So, I'm nineteen, finishing up the last bit of high school, and looking for a part-time job to pay some cash for a while, so I can start paying for college and the like.

'Course, up here in rural Colorado, it's incredibly difficult to find such jobs. I already screwed myself over in one area--the Conifer Safeway--by being fired from my deli position last year after just two weeks. (They have an incredibly high turnover rate due to the way they expect you to learn everything from the get go. Colorado has a thirty day trial period on jobs: if you fail during that period, you can be released quite easily. Me, I dropped a plate of Chinese food on a manager completely by accident after slipping on a dropped piece of paper no one noticed. ~_~) There are a couple places opening up--A Wendy's, oddly enough, and the new King Soopers is hiring still for all sorts of places--but I'm competing with the Conifer teenage population and the Bailey/Pine area teenage population here. That's ~3,000 kids(pure out-of-my-booty estimate) for about, say, forty-fifty jobs?

So, I see this ad in the local classifieds(called the Hustler for some reason. Don't give me that look, because it's not the bloody porno magazine. Everyone keeps thinking that everytime I mention it...) about one of those "work-from-home" jobs. I've always been wary about those; they never seem to be all that good.

This one seems kinda promising though. I've already checked out the privacy statements, so I'm not worried about losing any secure information. (Not that I have much to lose. I've got ~$25.00 top in my bank account.) What I am worried about is whether I'd actually earn anything. See, it's basically for selling "Wellness products." You know, energy bars, energy drinks, all that various sports stuff, protein stuff, aging reducing stuff. Basically bull-honkey all of it of course, which is a wee bit of a problem for me personally. And, again, I dunno how much of a market I'd find for it.

So here's the website: http://www.newcareermove.com (Yes, what a wonderfully inspiring URL they chose.)

Anyway, as I said, about the only reason I'm even considering this is due to the lack of jobs up here available to me. So, I come to you, the NS General crowd, and ask: is it worth it?

Doubtful. I wouldn't wish fast food on anyone, but those work from home ads are very nearly always scams of some sort.

Hence my reluctance. I'm watching their little fourteen minute promo thing right now. Seems rather intended to work at one's emotions rather than have you thinking. =/

And yet, there's still the lack of jobs up here. What to do....what to do...

It's a scam most likely, they tell you that you will be selling, and you will, selling the business, you sign up people under you and they sign up people under them, and so on, all of you have to buy the products on your monthly thing, and then you make a percentage of what they spend and your upline (the people who signed you up) make money off you.

Pyramid scheme, only now with energy bars.

if you are looking for a job that pays more than minimum wage, and you can work around college with, I would suggest you call around to your local Merry Maids type business, you can clean offices at night and they pay about $6 an hour or more (here it's close to $15) or if you really like selling, telemarketing, it's not a fun job, but if you are good in sales you can make a lot.

I agree. And if there's a temp agency, you might be able to get some day labor or some other kind of work you're qualified for. Then you don't have to hurdle the summer job issue in interviewing.

*nodnod*

I'm gonna keep looking at it for a while longer just in case it's somewhat decent, but odds are, you are correct, Smunkee.

And I'll look into it. I've yet to see anything about it here, but then again, as I said, we're a really rural area. Seriously. The entirety of downtown Pine Colorado is this little pit stop you pass by on Highway 285 in all of ten seconds. Conifer is not that much better in that regard.

So, yah. More paying attention to the Hustler and hoping for a break somewhere. *sigh* ~_~

I think it's a federal offense for me not to mention the national guard at this point. They pay of collage, and if your extra lucky, it'll happen of you like it did for me. Sent to a combat zone right out of high school. Tax free hazard pay, woot. Join the army, meet interesting people, then kill em. Fun.

Is it one of those network marketing deals or a "earn $$$ filling envelopes" outfit?

If the first then you have to remember the words of the great philosopher Alf: "it's not how much you sell, it's how much you buy."

But the second are scams by and by. They sell you a lot of "material," then you have to put it all together in the exact same way they tell you to, then you have it all rejected for some reason and have to buy more material. Oh, they'll pay you a little to keep you buying, but you'll end up losing lots more.

I actually don't know fully yet. I'm still watching that video. =/

If it is a "pay first" thing then I'll dump it immediately, of course. But if not...I'll certainly be curious to learn more.

Again, however, I seriously doubt that'll happen.

By the way: that name generator of yours? Good. Stuff. I've been using it for random puppets.

yeah. Although, you could sell Tupperware. LOL.

or Avon

or Mary Kay

or The Pampered Chef

they all actually sell things....I have done them all, in addition to Home Interiors, and Candle Factory, and SMC

yeah. The problem comes when you run out of people who want to/ can buy the crap you are selling.

yep. however with things like Tupperware, and Home Interiors, you know the "party plans" you can hold off on your "associate fee" until you make some money (and most of the time it's less that $20) and you don't really have to buy much else, except catalogs when you can afford it, which are pretty cheap anyway

Yah, true.

By the way, Smunkee, thanks for that tip about the Merry Maids thing, as it turns out we do have a local service for that, but I doubt they'd want me, as I am a male. I dunno if I gave some people the impression that I'm female--I am somewhat feministic--but I'm not. =/

Still, there are quite a few open positions, and now that I think about it, I've got a bit of an advantage over others regarding the King Sooper's deli. And I do not refer to my previous deli experience, but to some volunteer work I did in my school's cafeteria for the first semester--half a year. Lots of various duties. Washing dishes, helping cook various foods, it was kinda fun, and somewhat like the deli in Safeway, only the peeps at the school were a lot kinder about everything. So, there is that.

I'll look into that tomorrow, though. I may not sound--read?--like it on here, but I'm still under the weather from a sinus infection, so I'm going to give that another day to at least partially clear up before doing anything.

Indeed. Besides, what they would have me sell is total bullshit anyway. I think they might have wanted me ON their products too. Hell no. I'm not taking a single weight loss product or any other "wellness" crap you shove at me. I know it's all worthless, so don't try to tell me otherwise. actually when I was working for the local office cleaning outfit, they didn't want to let me go to the "after hours" stuff and it would all fall on the only guy that worked there, so he got a full 40 and I was stuck cleaning houses in the day.

you could always look for an inbound job, a lot of cell phone and credit card companies have inbound call centers around the country, basically people call you for billing info or to change up their plans and stuff, you are still expected to upsale but it's easier since you aren't disturbing them (after all they called you) or if you even have half a brain (I assume you do) they have tech support jobs where you read off the screen and get paid to do that, if there is something too hard you just pass them up.

Also, the local utility companies are always hiring for call center reps, to deal with people starting new service and stuff, or you might call the local cable company or also the local radio stations, during the summer they hire production assistants (which means guy who hands out bumper stickers and gets coffee for the DJ) but it's a cool job and you get to go to concerts and stuff for free.

I made a fair bit of money being a phone psychic one summer and you can do it from home, but you have to be careful of the scams.

If I were you I would just go to cell phone websites and call their job line, see if they have anything in your area.

I also forgot, worse job in the world, but better than outbound cold calling (which would really be the worst job in the world) waiting tables, people gotta eat and some of them tip.

You get paid by how long you keep them on the phone, like you get more per hour if your average call time is longer, a lot of people really just needed counseling, so I tried to help them out (since I have some counseling experience)

anyway, I ended up making something like $35 an hour, which was pretty good, even if I did only work like 4 hours a night since I was working another job as well.

from someone who used to work 80+ hours a week in fast food, get you a good pair of comfy shoes. You won't believe what a great investment they are, if your feet hurt, your whole body hurts.

I used to wear Vans (http://www.millencolin.com/goodies/desktops/MC-vans-wallpaper.jpg), they were a little pricey for getting fast food grease on, but priceless when it came to keeping my sanity, I get cranky when I am in pain.

It's a little of both. If you're a good worker, you can move upward quickly in fast food. The downside is that you've moved upward, which means you'll work a lot more hours with relatively little more in reward. Management is typically a way that they hook you with a salary and take away your life, because once you're management, if there's a shift that needs covering and you can't find someone, you cover it.

Oh, and since you're on salary, that means you don't get paid overtime either.

I know what you mean--I've been there. Just think of it this way--unless you're planning on making a career of Wendy's, don't give them any time outside of that they pay for. The manager knows what he's talking about when he says there's a lot of turnover--fast food is notorious for that, perhaps even more so than Wal-Mart. There's a reason--the work is shitty and you don't get paid much for it and the customers can be assholes. It's real easy to think "I'm not getting paid enough to do this shit" and the truth is that you aren't. If you're planning on moving up to the point where you're not in a store all day, then kick ass and you'll make it. But if this is a temp job, then remember, it's a temp job, and they'll boot you and won't feel bad about it, so you shouldn't feel bad about walking either.

Good points all. Problem is, I don't know which I've got in mind at the moment. ~_~

So, for the moment, I'll take it one day at a time. Hell, I've gotta actually start before I can decide which route to take, yah?

Well, all I can really say is: if you hear about a place that's opening up soon, go apply right away. You might just get a job. *shrug* Can't really help you more than that.

Please tell me you didn't join in the past 3 years.

About 5 years ago. I got caught in the overnight change from "guard dosn't do crap" to "The guard is the army". When I got on the plane for basic, nobody expected to go anywhere. When I got off the plane at home, I was already under orders for deployment. Shit happens.
