Commentary: I find it amusing that McClellan was fired only to be replaced by a Fox News Anchor. Bush sure knows how to pick 'em, huh?

Sources: Tony Snow likely to take White House post

By Suzanne Malveaux
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sources close to the White House said Monday that Fox anchor Tony Snow is likely to accept the job as White House press secretary, succeeding Scott McClellan.

The sources said they expect him to announce his decision within the next few days.

A source familiar with the discussions said Monday that newly appointed Chief of Staff Josh Bolten asked Snow to make a decision by early this week.

Two sources familiar with the discussions said Bolten wanted to fill the post this week, as early as Tuesday.

Sources familiar with Snow's deliberations said he has been focusing on family, finances and his health, as he battles colon cancer.

Neither Snow nor the White House would comment.

Sources familiar with the matter said the White House approached the Fox anchor several weeks ago. Snow then met with Bolten and other officials at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Snow serves as a political analyst for Fox News Channel, which he joined in 1996.

He was a nationally syndicated columnist with The Detroit News in Detroit, Michigan, from 1993 to 2001 and was a columnist for USA Today from 1994 to 2000.

Before that, he was an editorial writer at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia; editorial page editor of The Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia; deputy editorial page editor of The Detroit News; and editorial page editor of The Washington Times.

The conservative radio talk show host, who was born in 1955, served as a speech writer for President Bush's father in 1991.

In a separate personnel matter, discussions are also continuing about replacing Treasury Secretary John Snow, said two sources familiar with the issue and a third GOP source close to the White House.

Republicans familiar with the discussions said David Mulford, currently U.S. ambassador to India and a former Treasury Department official who also was the European chief of Credit Suisse First Boston, is considered a candidate for the job.

CNN's John King contributed to this report.

Seems that way. I can't say for certain, though, as I know little of this Tom Snow character.

I suppose nobody has mentioned that Clinton's campaign manager George Stephanopoulos is at ABC...

every TV news network leans left exceopt for fox. Lefties should quit bitching about Fox and just keep it tuned to ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc. MSNBC might be centrist.

or for balance, watch both Fox and ABC... you'd have the view from both sides.

I swear, this man does everything in his power to not be taken seriously.

It's beyond obvious how this looks and when making this sort of decision that has to be taken into account. What the hell is he playing at? It's all too easy to discount him as an obliviously detached moron with no sense of self-image (or no sense at all) but I can't help but wonder if that is what the Man wants from us. I'm not sure what makes me more nervous, actually having a moron in a position of power, or having a nation that thinks we actually have a moron in a position of power.

And don't just play this off as his advisors and let Bush play the role of the underling. There is more too it then that.

My sentiments exactly; and he all ready has the job prerequisites, too: lack of intelligence, flexible morals, and a knack for distorting the (objective) truth.

Or better yet, watch and read the BBC. Pure unbiased stuff. Or as unbiased as governmentally sponsored news programs can be, which is actually rather amazing.

That's like saying that listening to Pat Robertson and Bill Clinton equates into a centrist view; I do believe that Pat is a bit more out there than Bill Clinton ever was.

Yeah, they lean so far left that they hamstrung Clinton's anti-terrorism efforts against Al Quaeda by constantly saying any military action by him was "wagging the dog" and by hounding him on his personal life.

Meanwhile, while there is evidence that, in accordance with Rove's orders, Bush did "wag the dog" with his invasion of Iraq, the press acted like obedient lapdogs and failed to seriously attack the reasons for the war. Only now that Bush's approval ratings are in the toilet do they develop the backbone to start criticizing him.

You leftie! Just confess you are trying to take over the world via the news station!

Actually the term I heard coined was "infotainment"

Actually the term I heard coined was "infotainment"Indeed it was. I prefer watching proper news. We luckily have a bunch of government funded stations that are run by councils made up of different interest groups (churches, political parties represented in the Bundestag/regional parliaments, or others). They're certainly not all "left" or "right" and the fact that they don't rely on commercials for their programs allows them to show news without really paying too much attention to the ratings. Now pretty much all of the American channels I've seen are out to sell the product. Thank goodness I only get CNN international here. That has to compete with the BBC and that helps raising its standards for news programs.

I'm sure Snow will remain as fair and balanced in his new role as a Bush-tool, as he was in his previous role as a... Bush-tool.

You going to pull that discredited UCLA study out again to "prove your point?" You watch Stephanopolous on any given week, and you'll see he's being a journalist, not a hack. And who else is on the panel? George Will---solid classical conservative, Sam Donaldson, journalist and equal opportunity pain in the ass, and Cokie Roberts, whose politics flutter in the wind opportunistically. Hmm. Real liberal bias there. And if you look at the guests over the last ten years, you'll notice that conservatives outnumber progressives about 3 to 2--on all Sunday talk shows.

But go ahead, keep it up with the "liberal bias" story. Just remember that we're all laughing at you. Openly.

That's one of the things I have to beat out of my freshmen every year. I just keep asking them "so what's the other side?" over and over until they get it--that the world is not a dichotomy, that answers are rarely simple yes/no choices, and that anyone who is trying to convince them that they are is looking to fuck them over, and good.

EDIT: On the plus side, they generally acknowledge from the beginning that there are two sides, rather than being stuck with the idea that there is a single absolute truth in every case.
