Name My Kitty

Grainne Ni Malley
25-04-2006, 03:18
My cat had kittens and we've decided to keep one. He is black with a white belly, white paws and a little white mark on his chin. I can't think of a name for him and the ones that my other family members have been calling him are completely unacceptable. My son, for example, has been calling him Athol. Ideas please?

Not very imaginative, is it? I could call him That Hairy Cat and just call him THC for short. Still, I'd prefer to give him a decent name with the superstitious thought that if I don't he'll get hit by a car or something.

Even so, you should go with an old Latin name like Lucious or Tiberious (that's good for a cat).

Yakineko... :D (Long story, but that's a long standing joke among some of my friends - it beans "burnt/fried cat" in Japanese.)

And I know of an expat living in Japan, who's daughter aquired a cat while back in the US at college, and named it "Neko" (cat in Japanese). She apparantly had some difficulty when she retuned to Japan and the cat had to go through quarentine - the quarentine officer of course had to ask the name, leading to a "Who's on first" sort of conversation.

Oh, that's horrible. I had a cat who died of flea poisoning because I couldn't afford to pay $600 for a blood transfusion at the emergency vet hospital. He was a little white kitty we had named Velcro because when I went to put him down he had stuck himself to my shirt and wouldn't let go. I tried to do everything I could for him and it was so sad when he didn't make it. I'm really sorry about your kitty. :(

Brown cats are suprisingly hard to find.

My family has had three cats; Jess, Buster, and Skimbleshanks (after the song "Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat", although we usually called her "Skimbles"). I know of cats named Pebbles, Biscuit, Max, and Flick - plus there's a pair of pretty-but-evil ginger cats which live nextdoor, and which I call Goering and Goebbels.

Of those, I think I rather like "biscuit", although I once thought of calling a kitten "Nergal" (after the Sumerian god of war), and if I ever get a Russian Blue he will be called Ivan or Trotsky. What about "Muffin"?

There's something about cats that invites them to be named after confectionery, it seems. Gateaux? Marshmallow? I'm being silly now, I know.

"Augustine", perhaps? You could call him "Gus" for short.

^^ Jerry looks so comfortable there amid the computer parts. SaS hated my computer - If I was on it I wasn't paying attention to him. And as one of "my three sons" - I have...had three tuxedos - Poot and Monster Paws miss him too- he felt he never got enough.

It hurts so at first, but the joy the memories bring wipe the pain away. I know it doesn't seem so now but it does. Our twelve years was not enough, but thats my selfishness crying out. I held him as the vet gave him the injection, it was the greatest gift I could give him. One we can't give the two leggeds that we love when they are in such desperate straights; but have the ability to give our four footed family - a blessing in return for the unconditional love they give us?

Sorry babbled enough.

Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions! We went with Yakineko. I call him Neko for short because he gives a little squinty eyed look that implies, "Just wait until you fall asleep you foul human" every time I call him Yakineko. Anytime I can incorporate a foreign language into my daily life, I jump at the opportunity.

I gave my son the options of Tybalt, Toby and Oreo as well (unfortunately I didn't see some of the other cute names like Domino or Penguin until today) and once I told him what Yakineko meant, he immediately voted for that himself. What can I say? My whole family is morbid. Although a friend suggested I find out how to say "dead kitty" in Japanese because I accidentally sat on him last night. HE'S OK... just flatter.

how about 'slinky malinky'? i'm pretty sure he was a black cat with similar markings. might have been just black but it's a cool name anyway. :)

we used to have two black and white cats, 'minty' and 'dill'. dill was closer in coat pattern to yours. we also had a black siamese cross called 'rafal' or 'raphal'. never been clear on the spelling of that one.

or how about 'horse' like the cat out of 'footrot flats'?

no, not half anything, there were two possibilities so two cats, a live cat and a dead one.

true, true. my bad. still a good name for a cat. just trying to convince my husband to name our next cat schrodinger.

he wanted to name the two kittens we got about a year ago Hema and Roid (mother and son cats) but they already had names from the humane society (thank god)

We fostered kittens last summer, and gave them temporary names: Princess, Lois (to go with,) Clark, Magellan (he liked exploring) and Maria (becuase as far as I was concerned, her's was a virgin birth). All these were grey tabbies without much remarkable marking. We decided to keep Magellan, becuase I fell in love with him, and got another orange/white kitten. Him, we named Pounce deLeon. We usually just call him Pounce.

So....

Princess (or Prince, or Prints)
Magellan
Pounce
Lily
YinYang
Cow (hehe)

or just wait a bit and see what his temprament is like. Looks are only half the battle of naming, and you can't name a sweet little lap-cat Killer, and you can't name a hunter/explorer cat SweetPea.

Just don't wait too long or you'll end up with "kitty".

Lastly, my all time favorite - really it's for an all black cat, but you could name it...

You should try the never fail method of naming cats
Walk in living room with cat in your arms..... turn on TV, first person named on the TV will become your cat's name

First cat I had was called Boris Yeltsin the cat ( a blue cat aquired in 1990 )now sadly buried at the bottom of my garden.:(
And my current cat is called Sir Arthur Wellesley the cat or "stop clawing the f***ing sofa you f***ing stupid animal!!!!":gundge:

My cats also have their own IRC nicks of "Mr Kitty".:p

Since he won't come when you call anyway, might as well get some mileage out of it.

No, no, no. His name is Yakineko and that's final. Well, sometimes it's Nakiyeko when my boyfriend's trying to remember how to pronounce it.

As in Kathmandu? That would have been cool, too. However, with my kitty's name I can jokingly tell everyone his name means "Hot Pussy". It's not exact, but I can warp the words around to be my little pervert self. Truth be told, how could I pass up "Fried Cat"?

Yeah so you could tell people "This is my cat, Mandu"
In what language does it mean Fried Cat?

That would've been great, too! Darn my impatience to name my kitty. I could have waited a second day to get a bigger list of names, but I do like the one we gave him.

Even your boyfriend's mispronunciation fits into it - "naki" can mean either "in tears" or "deceased". The closest Japanese comes to "yeko" is "ekou", meaning "a memorial service". That fits right into your friends suggestion of "dead cat".

Yeah so you could tell people "This is my cat, Mandu"

Right question, wrong name. Yakineko is the one that means "fried cat". ;)

Actually it was the right name, but poorly constructed as I was referring to the Yakineko name, which I just didn't mention because I'm lazy and figured she knew what I meant.

So, my kitty's been named and I thought I'd share a picture of my adorable kitty. He's an extremely fun, playful little guy who has slightly vampiric tendencies and razor-sharp claws that love to redecorate my house and my family. He also has the ability to fly across a a room, especially when he thinks that a hand moving underneath a blanket is prey. All in all, he is a delightful addition to our zoo.

My cat had kittens and we've decided to keep one. He is black with a white belly, white paws and a little white mark on his chin. I can't think of a name for him and the ones that my other family members have been calling him are completely unacceptable. My son, for example, has been calling him Athol. Ideas please?

Call him Holstein.

Also, the cat's already been named. I just wanted to share his picture for everyone who participated in the thread, but thanks! :)

Can you see the demonic mischief? It's definitely there. He has a slightly possessed look about him. As for being a handful, he tried to eat my Calla last night so your intuitive judgement is dead on.

Lewis the cat gets home detention
Judge spares accused serial-scratcher, owner on probation
Wednesday, June 21, 2006; Posted: 12:43 p.m. EDT (16:43 GMT)
Ruth Cisero holds her cat, Lewis, who was sentenced to the feline version of home detention.

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (AP) -- A Connecticut judge on Tuesday spared the life of alleged serial-scratcher Lewis the cat, whom even Prozac could not tame, but ordered that the felonious feline remain inside his owner's home at all times.

"There are no exceptions. None," said Judge Patrick Carroll, who also granted accelerated rehabilitation to Lewis' owner, Ruth Cisero of Fairfield, Connecticut.

That means her record will be expunged if she successfully completes two years of probation.

Cisero had faced a charge of reckless endangerment. Neighbors complained that the cat's long claws and stealth have allowed it to attack at least a half-dozen people and ambush the Avon cosmetics lady as she got out of her car on her neighborhood rounds. (Watch why Lewis is grounded for the rest of his 9 lives -- 1:57)

Cisero had rejected a previous offer of accelerated rehabilitation if she agreed to euthanize Lewis.

Carroll said Lewis cannot leave the house, even if he gets out accidentally. He said the case is not about a cat, but about people having the right to live in safety in their neighborhoods.

Janet Kettman, one of Lewis" victims, has previously said she and her neighbors on Sunset Circle are always looking over their shoulders in fear the stalker will strike again.

"He attacks from the back," Kettman said. "You never see it coming. He has six toes on every foot, which constitutes a very formidable weapon."

"He will not retreat," Kettman said. "His mouth is open and his tail is swishing."

"Also, he gives out mixed signals," Kettman continued. "He would sidle against you and purr. You bend down to pet him and he'd attack you."

The case drew national attention. Lewis has appeared in People magazine and his own page on the social networking site MySpace.com.

But Cisero said Tuesday she would prefer to have never had the attention.

"I never thought it would come to this," she said. "It's been an absolute nightmare. It's ruined my life."

Lewis was put on the antidepressant Prozac, but his owner was worried and took him off it because he became too sleepy.
