Someone who does this:

What's a troll?

homo

The best thing to do is ignore them. That's what people mean when they say, "Don't feed the trolls."

Troller is looking for a response...ANY response, and he will chum the waters with complaints, insults, compliments, and inflammatory tidbits hoping that someone...ANYONE, will take the bait. Generally quite harmless - practices a form of catch and release. Nonetheless, he can upset the delicate ecology of a discussion forum. Once a forum becomes aware of his presence, however, all feeding activity ceases and Troller must move on to more promising waters.

Commonly in NS forums, a troll is considered someone who posts antagonistic or inflammatory comments merely for the sake of pissing people off. More often than not, they don't even stay and defend their reprehensible posts, they just drop their turd and leave the thread. Common troll droppings include racist remarks, overt religious denunciations or dogma without explanation, or similar deliberate firestarters desinged to get attention. As such, trolls are considered beneath contempt by the vast majority of NS posters who'd rather go toe-to-toe with someone who can actually debate rather than wrangle a juvenile thread soiler.

Damn, that was good! Though, on the flip side of the coin, not all "trolls" are intentional! In rare cases, you'll be branded a "troll" simply for stating an opinion that's considered, how shall I say, unpopular! You may not be trying to piss people off but, if you're opinion isn't in agreement with the masses, you will be crucified or burned at the stake! Let's just say I've had a past experience! You can try (usually in vain) to defend your position but it's best to just calm down and make friends! :)

Understood, and well said. I was working off the most pernicious definition I could think of.

I've always considered spam to be junk e-mail or pop-up advertisements! That being said; I'm anti-spam!

No, people use flames aginst trolls because they and acidic wit are the only ways past its regeneration abilities.

In Oblivion, trolls are weakass and usually go down with one sneak attack with an elven sword. If not snuck up upon, they'll attack with quick, weak swipes of their hands and will be dispatched with two or three normal attacks with an elven sword.

Their regeneration abilities, if they even have any in Oblivion, are too limited to matter, as you are usually done with them in one to three seconds. They have poor vision, and usually hide in dark areas, so it makes it doubly easy to sneak on them and end the encounter within a second of the 'fight' starting.

In WoW, Trolls are a race of Sublime fans with tusks.

In Xanth, trolls hang out around medium-sized bridges, forcing encountees to pay a toll. A troll toll.

In messageboards, trolls make remarks specifically for the purpose of pissing people off, and can be dispatched just as easily as in Oblivion.

A troll was a trendy doll of the mid to late '90s made of plastic with multicolored hair that people would usually brush upwards. They were most commonly about six inches tall, didn't have moveable limbs, and were cute as opposed to ugly.
