Out of the poll options...I'd go for either Led Zep or RATM.

As for the actual greatest album ever...it's personal opinion. No doubt whatever I say will be criticised by someone, so I won't bother.

But...

The Fall of Math - 65daysofstatic.

Interesting to note how heavily all the albums (even those produced by white artists) are influenced by black music: the MC5 seem like one of the exceptionsto this until one realises that they trace their lineage directly from Chuck Berry, leaving only Pearl Jam as an example of primarily white music.

When you consider that most rock music traces its origins back to blues, that's hardly surprising. Even Pearl Jam were influenced by the blues to some extent - not so heavily as LZ, for example, but the influence is still there.

Nope. The only one who considered it worthy enough of a reply, though.

The key word in my post was 'heavily' - obviously all rock is based on a fusion of country music and the blues, but the influence of black music seems particularly obvious for all but one in the list compared to, say, a random selection of records.

I voted Parliament. But the list would have been better to drop Rage, and add The Beatles: Abbey Road

:D What is Rage against the Machine doing on a shortlist for 'Greatest Album Ever'?

Anyway, there is no greatest album. Just like there's no greatest colour or greatest shape, or greatest any-other-thing-that's-totally-subjective.

None of the listed albums have a damn thing on Rush's Moving Pictures.

I'm going to disagree with you, just to disagree :p

Greatest color: Burnt Umber (cuz it's BURNT!)

Greatest Shape: Cylinder (it's both long AND round ;) )

Greatest any-other-thing-that's-totally-subjective: Pancakes!!

There are far too many great albums, of all genres for any answer to ever be objective. My all-time favorite itself changes from moment to moment.

And where is Margaret Thatcher: The Great Speeches? My idol and I are mildly irritated; we might go as far as to say that we are a little annoyed.

At least be consistent. e.g. *cringe* = *cringes*, or *dies* = *death*.

I put Are You Experienced first, but...

How could you leave off:
Exile on Main St
Blonde on Blonde
Blue
Doolittle

Any of those are leads better than that Rage Against the Machine crap.

Rage Against the Machine can basically be summed up by: "I'm such a rebel, look at me, LOOK AT ME!"

Actually, I would pick Pink Floyd's "The Wall" as best album ever, but, since that wasn't on the list, I'll go with Jimi! RATM is second!!!

I'd like to see you being one of the most influential bands of the decade and fighting for equality and freedom

Did you know that rage singer zack de la Rocha is one of the main people behind the attempts to clear Mumia Abu- Jamar's name?

Seriously, those options have got to be some of the worst choices for such a nomination as I think I've ever seen in my life. Pet Sounds and Sergeant Pepper [along with possibly Revolver or Abbey Road] are both leaps and bounds better than any option on the list. The entire pre-1978 Who catalog blows this sorry litany of albums hopelessly out of the water as well. While there are some thing on there I like [P-Funk, Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone] none of them deserve the title of "best album." "Are You Experienced" is probably top ten or top twenty material, but that's about as close as it gets. The idea the RHCP or Pearl Jam is responsible for the "best album ever" is enough to make me want to just end it all right now.

You have Pulic Enemy and MC5?
What about Run-DMC? They paved the way for the popularity of any sort of rap.

I vote to add: Run-DMC - Raising Hell
