Self explanatory.

I like the music from the final fantasy series. I love Nobuo Uematsu. I think he is among the best there is, as far as composing music(well for tv, games etc...idk if i'd say he is a mozart or whoever);)

Nobuo was sooooo much better with his music in Chrono Trigger. The soundtrack for The Movies is good and the original Deus Ex had great music. Rise of Nations has good music as well. And if you can hear it, the original Diablo music as pretty good at the cave levels.

None. It's all tinny, repetitive beeps. It's ok for background music, but I certainly wouldn't say there is any that I would consider great.

I've heard good things about him, but I doubt he was as good as Mozart. Keep in mind that Mozart routinely composed entire 20 minute pieces for orchestra in his head. Videogame music just doesn't allow the opportunity for such complexity.

I agree Final Fantasy has the best music. Which is weird for me, because I generally can't stand that kind of music if it's not on a game or a movie.

You know, I've noticed you're quite a closed minded-person in some regards. the first paragraph is nonsense. it hasn't been tinny, repetetive beeps for at least 15 years. that's most of my lifetime. so that point isn't just broke, it was nonsense since the moment you typed it.

And secondly, you can make your superior doubting noises all you like, but if you've never heard it, you don't have the right to comment. I'm a huge fan of classical music, but some videogame music is exceptional.

Not only that, but complexity doesn't mean crap. 2 examples off the top of my head of some fantastic, simple music.

Canon in D by Pachebel. Simple as it comes.
Adagio for Strings, by Barber, and the agnus dei variant, as it's the same music.

How about another. the Lacrimosa, from Mozarts Requiem. That's pretty simple. how about another from Mozart. Twinkle Twinkle little star?

Ergh. Rant over.

Well I'm sorry. I'm just going by what I've heard. I don't play a lot of videogames and have always heard that the music consists of beeps. I see your point, though.

Canon in D by Pachebel. Simple as it comes.

Actually, it's a canon, among the most demanding compositional forms there is. Making the melody not only fit with itself like that but sound good is quite hard. Pachebel had to compose the melody with extraordinary care or it would have sounded like crap due to bad contrapuntal interactions.

Yes, but they also did other, much more complex stuff. Citing their simplest works proves little.

Seriously. You need to play through any of the Final Fantasy games to see why I'm really pissed off at you at the moment.

Now that I thnk of it, Homeworld tops the list, because the main theme is Barber's Agnus Dei, the choral arrangement of Adagio for strings. A beautiful and majestically sad piece of music.

I always liked the Starcraft soundtrack. Although, I'd never listen to it outside the context of playing Starcraft.

The sountrack for Total Annihilation on the other hand...

I can't believe nobody mentioned Metroid, specifically the Kraid theme from the original. That music was superb. It helped set the mood, yet you never noticed it until you put that controller down and actually listened to it.

Metroid games have always had some of the most fitting, atmospheric music for any game, regardless of genre.

The music of Outcast and Hitman 2 were performed my symphony orchestras. So "awful noises"?

Infinity-engine games have included some of the greatest game music I've ever heard: Baldur's Gate -series, Icewind Dale I&II, Planescape: Torment. Also, the mellow themes of Tropico have made it a game I play when I just want to relax.

Soul Calibur! I almost forgot about the orchestrated soundtrack on that series.

I would have to say that the best music I've heard in a video game would have to be from Wipeout 2097 and also SSX 3 (snowboarding game). They just capture the game so well and keep you immersed. But, out of the two games, I would pick SSX 3 anytime.

It's got to be Metroid Prime or any of the Zelda series

I'm not sure about Wipeout 2097, as I've not played it, but the soundtrack for SSX 3 was provided by actual bands; it wasn't music created specifically for the game itself.

Any Blizzard game. They go above and beyond on their musical score, Diablo 2 had some great music. World of Warcraft's music sounds just epic at times.

Otherwise Super Metroid, always loved the background music there, added just the right atmosphere at all times.

best i've heard is from the grand theft auto series. the first one was best and then GTA III especially the drum and bass station. apart from them the music on counterstrike: red alert was pretty good, very atmospheric and industrial sounding at the same time.

That was great, but it pales in comparison to Wood Man and Bubble Man themes. Also, Snake Man theme from Mega Man 3 was great.

I don't know what my favourite would be, but the one that was definitely seared into my brain for all time was Nobunaga's Ambition for NES. (And yes, I realize I just dated myself with that one... but anyone who played it and left the sound going will know exactly what I'm talking about...)

Hmm... out of the admittedly limited assortment of game music I've actually heard, I like the game music (and specifically the racial music) in Ascendancy best.
