WHY is it so fucking awesome?

And WHY is Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich the Greatest. Composer. Ever.?

It's been conclusively proven that all of the works commonly credited to Shostakovich were in fact written by Remmicky De Elermouseio.

I'm surprised you didn't know that.

Really?

My roomie just told me they were all collaborations between Speedy Gonzalez and Incognito Mosquito!

No, they worked together on many classics, only to have them stolen and the credit taken by Mozart.

It was a cut throat business, classical music composition.

Ahh...so everything attributed to Mozart was actually written by a mouse and mosquito.

That explains why it's all crap with absolutely no artistic value whatsoever--just fancy-assed arrangements of sound with no content.

Actually, that's true of all Baroque music.

Elgar is alright, but if I had to choose my Desert Island Disks I'd be torn between Beethoven and Rachmaninov as the composer to take.

Yuss, I'm partial to a bit of Ludwig van, too! He kickety kicks ass.
So does Chopin.

I don't know. I've only heard part of it, I'm afraid. Your other question is equally difficult as well. While it is clear that Shostakovich's disuse of power chords and drum machines contributed, that doesn't explain his greatness as such disuse is typical of all classical composers.

I fail to see what else you can expect of music. Sure, some songs have a powerful emotional effect, but those are rare and extremely subjective (Rammstein's "Spring", for instance, hits me in a way I can't really describe, whereas "Imagine" just makes me want to throw things at John Lennon's head). At least Mozart is intricate and engaging to the ear (and, as such, can be enjoyed on a purely intellectual level. Much the way it was written to be enjoyed), most musical-types just throw random shit together and hope it sticks.

Indeed, I've always found much Baroque and Classical era music to be rather dull. They're intricate, but they come off as dry and formulaic.

Actually, he isn't.

*flees thread under a barrage of scores of Shostakovich symphonies and concerti, which in adequate quantities could replace the bunker buster*

I defy you to refute a single word he ever said or...wait, never mind.

Wrong person.

Precisely.

It didn't start getting good until the late Classical period, into the Romantic period.

That is not true. Romantic is probably my favourite of art music styles, but Baroque is good too. The emotion is there, and it sometimes sings, sometimes it's orgasmic. It's just not as overtly emotive as romantic music. Don't discredit it.

I would like to respectfully disagree. A lot of Baroque and Classical-era music (and some even earlier) is quite as capable of Romantic emotional extremes, just in a more subtle way. Naturally subtlety isn't always what we're looking for in music, at least in that way -- I'll admit that 19th century composers such as Chopin and Brahms are among my favourites -- but still, it isn't all dry and formulaic as you seem to believe. Try listening to, for instance, Bach's B Minor Mass, the St Matthew Passion, or similar; they don't come across that way at all in my opinion at least.

Glad that you like classical music, though. Good topic!
