I'm getting ready to go sleep, but first, a thread on movies that were filmed/based on your area!

So one night I'm surfing the tv channels and end up watching an old Sean Connery movie.. then.. I start hearing all these names of local places.. and oh my god.. they made a movie about the history oh where I live, how cool! That movie being The Molly Maguires :

It takes place in the 1870s in Pennsylvania. An undercover detective (Harris) joins the miners in order to unmask a secret society which goes by the name of "The Molly Maguires". The Maguires have been causing all kinds of sabotage and damage at a variety of Pennsylvanian mines (they're disgruntled after being unsuccessful in a recent strike). Harris is determined to track down their leaders and put an end to the crimes, but he slowly begins to be seduced by their cause and their charismatic leader Kehoe (Sean Connery).

Then, I was watching.. well all.. of M. Night Shyamalan's movies are filmed in this area. So yeah..

Also, MTV has been around here many many times. A local girl was on MADE. A guy was on Pimp My Trailor.. I think that's the name..

And kinda off topic.. a man a town over was used as a character in a Mark Twain story.

Anything like that around where your area?

Not making this up--I recognized my favorite breakfast place in the background shot of the beginning of some downloaded porn. The porn took place in a building across the street from the restaurant, but I look at that place whenever I go there for breakfast, and I wonder if that hairdresser still works there, and how a bald guy like me could justify a salon visit. ;)

MTV actually did that at my High School last year. Between managing to insult the rockers at our school while trying to show the "diversity" of the school, and the fact that they picked an utter dolt to "Make", I found myself very glad that I didn't watch MTV anyway.

They filmed the molly maguires around Eckerly, right?

I live in NYC, they film tonnes of stuff here. It's annoying.

The Micheal Cane verison of Get Carter was filmed in the same area as I grew up. Didn't have my town though.

The beat on the street in my area is that they're going to be filming lots of things in Leiper's Fork, Tennessee, which is right about 40 minutes south of Nashville. They already shot one movie on my street a couple of years ago, but I didn't care enough at the time to check it out.

And as for just recognising things, I can't watch The OC, and it's not just because it sucks in general. It's because when I see the background, it's NOT Orange County. It's just not! They film in Los Angeles county because it's cheaper. Grarm, I know the town they're pretending to be in like the back of my hand, and that sure as hell isn't Newport Beach.

The movie was filmed in Eckley, Pennsylvania in 1968; which was so unchanged from its 1870s appearance that the only major alteration needed for filming was to remove television antennas and install cable TV.

The filming of the movie resulted in the town's being saved from demolition, and it was afterward turned into a mining museum under the control of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; Eckley's self-imposed nickname is "the ugliest town in America." Portions of the film were also shot in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.

My god I love wiki.

Stanley Baker, star of "Zulu", was born in the next street to my dad, and in one of his films ("Hell Drivers") answers the question "Where are you from?" with a lie (but it does lead to a very good line - he's from Ferndale, but answers the question "Blaenllechau" which is the village opposite, leading to Sid James saying "Blimey, sounds like a lung disease!").

Aside from that? "Twin Town", which very few people have seen and even less people who aren't Welsh GET, may as well have been filmed in my home town, it's such a perfect picture of the place.

Oh, and "How Green was my Valley" was written about my home town. Then filmed in Hollywood. With Roddy McDowell.

A River Runs Through It and Horse Whisperer were both filmed nearby. Glenn Close used to own a restaurant downtown.

They filmed some movie called "The Secret Life of Words" here in Belfast the year before last (I think it's set on an oil rig, and they needed to use the dry dock here to film in).

Richard Attenborough was here a week or so ago filming his new movie. Called "Closing the Ring" it's set in Belfast during WW2 and is about a US bomber than crash landed in one of the mountains that surround the city. Sounds interesting enough.

That Stephen King series "Desperation" that came out a few months ago was filmed here. They set the Convention Center on fire accidently.

"Major League" was filmed in my city, or at least all the stadium shots. I remember the big-brew-ha about getting people to come in and fill the stands. That was back in the day, though. Anything recently, mmm, probably not. Milwaukee isn't exactly a hub of any cinamatic experiences.

the movie CONTACT, with jodie foster, was set, in part, at the VLA about 60 miles west of here. (socorro being the nearest town of any size, pop. 9000) authentically enough, they filmed AT the vla (very large array, radiotelecopes). my sister go to be an extra.

do you remember the show "unsolved mysteries"? they had an episode exploring a UFO incident in socorro from the 50s. 2 seconds of it features a cop car driving fast down the street i was living on at the time.

I can't think of any movies that are actually set in Oshawa (and I can't think why you would want to...), but there have been plenty of movies filmed around the corner from where I live.

The Mclaughlin estate is a mansion that is featured in various films, including Billy Madison, the X-Men movies and the Tuxedo just to name a few. A run-down part of town was a scene for 'John Q' and about a half-hour north of me is Port Perry, where they filmed 'Welcome to Mooseport', and various other movies. (It was weird seeing all the American flags hanging in Port Perry...)

League of Their Own by Tom Hanks was filmed thirty or fourty miles from where I live and again about as far away some new WW2 movie is being prepared to be filmed, they even have some big battle ships and a few other ships on the river.

I used to live right next to the street in Oxnard, California where they filmed the race part at the end of Back to the Future Part III.

And parts of Swordfish were filmed in Ventura, just a few miles away. My family even met John Travolta during filming.

There's a new movie with Nicole Kidman and Jack Black being filmed where I am in Hampton Bays, NY. A lot of films are made on this portion of Long Island, though.

All of the Cathedral scenes in the new Da Vici code movie were filmed just up the road from me in Lincoln Cathedral. It won't actually appear as Lincoln Cathedral in the movie though, because it was made to look like Westminster abbey (think that's the one) for the film. Something to do with Westminster having a problem with the book so they wouldn't let them film there, whilst at Lincoln they didn't give a toss, so they just took the money the film company were offering for use of the Cathedral. Something like that anyway.

a lot of stuff was filmed here, most recently Twister (in which I was an extra), part of Elizabeth Town, and Wisteria (which my husband is in), and I just sent in his headshot for a movie that will begin filming here in July, that I don't know the name of, but is affiliated in some way with Paramount.

Lemme think... oh, this one's great:

Ever see 'Detroit Rock City'? I hadn't 'til it came out on television, and I was totally taken by surprise. Most of the movie was filmed at the corner of King and Church Streets right here in Toronto. I pass through that intersection everyday going to and from work. On one corner, there's a lovely church - which gets used in the film as well, interiors as well as exterior shots. There's a paved vacant lot diagonal to the church, across the intersection - used for parking. This had been exposed red/brown brick but had been painted over black (now used as billboard space), as though to be the parking lot for some large concert venue.

Now, across from both the lot and the church stands a building (very old building) which had been dressed up to be a restaurant. I don't know what went wrong, but for some reason, the windowdressing for this restaurant ("Blump's Burgers"), including this ludicrous-looking signage, stayed up for about two years after this movie got released. It was empty, not a burger ever actually served, but nobody seemed to remember it ever being open before it closed. So I'm watching this dumb flick and - hey whaddaya know! Blump's Burgers!

Mystery solved. Gimme a Scooby snack.

Hmm...

Well, Tom hanks was born in my current city.

I won't get into mtv/etc, I live in the freaking bay area... too much stuff to list.

I got filmed a couple days ago at work, but I don't know what it was about. Meh. I'll ask a manager next time I'm in. I heard someone say it was a tv show, someone say news, etc.

Doing some online searching...

Parts of scream were filmed in concord

It seems as though "The wild ride" was entirely filmed here

American Graffiti, and most of hells angels were filmed here...

American yearbook was apparently filmed in accalanes, in lafayette...

Lets just say nothing important.

meh, I live in New Zealand so half the big movies of the past 6 years were made pretty much down the street.
