A Meta Thread--How much do you care about your threads?

I remember my early days around here--and even before then, when we were on the old server, the server of Doom. I'd start a thread, earnest and sure that it would catch fire and become a thread of legend--80 pages, no, 90, no, 150!--and I'd watch it plummet to the bottom of the page and then the next until it disappeared into the bowels of the server, never to be bumped again.

In those early days, I'd bump the thread obnoxiously, as if to say "cannot you gentle folk understand the genius before you here? Are you barbarians or merely plebeians?" And still it would sink.

These days, I'm less emotional about it. I give myself one bump if it falls to the bottom without a single reply, because I figure, threads pop up so quickly around here some days that it's possible it just got overlooked. (On a side note, I try to scan down on occasion to see if that's happening to other threads, and reply if I think it's worth a shot.)

And then there are the threads that make it--like my "Taking a Dump in a Public Toilet" thread. It's about ten pages now, and hopefully dead, but it had a good run.

So how responsible do you feel for your threads, once they get started? Do you try to moderate them yourself, ask people to calm down in them, try to keep thread drift to a minimum? Or do you just let them go organically? Do you feel like you have a responsibility to answer charges made against your point of view, or do you just let them go after a while? How invested are you?

And on that note, I fully expect this thread to get about 3 replies and die. :D

I watch it go about half way down the page (this usually takes about 30 min because most of my threads are created around 6:00 UTC) then start to get some posts. It will get to about three pages, then I will go to bed. I wake up and see that the thread is ten-fifteen pages longer, all of which are Pure Metal, Glitz, Peechland,Cabra, etc fluffling the fuck out of eachother, then it gets back on topic for about a page, then the fluffles return. I see the huge postcount, think "Wow, let's take a look." I get about halfway through a page of new posts, and say "Fuck it, I'm not posting in this thread no more."

probibly because it's part of a multi thread, multi player RP..

the first post is meny, meny screens long now. it just keeps growing as i gather more information to add to it :D

and now, i shall post a gun smiley, because i hardly ever use them

If it's a thread I'm really interested in rping (It could be anyone's thread) I'll keep bumping it. Not for long, just until I give up on it.

I see the same thing. I think "this thread rocks, we'll have good debate, it'll go on forever!". Then it gets...maybe a handful of posts.

Or the thread where you have a good idea- but then people misread it, and go off on some similar sounding but vastly different subject which makes your op irrelevant, and you just get sick and abandon the thread after two pages, just hoping it will die.

Then I start a thread when I'm drunk, all about flaming soccer and praising football...and that thing still pops up from time to time.

depends on the thread. if i'm serious and wanting after some real debate on the issue, i'll probably either bump a couple of times or wait till the place heats up (or more regulars are around), and get kinda annoyed if it just dies. in those kinds of thread i try to keep things vaguely on track and drive the debate as well as replying to as many of the serious replies/POVs i can.

for non-serious threads i'm happy just to get 5 replies or so :P

I really don't care about my threads. Usually I just want one piece of information and once it's given then I'll go off feeling happy and warm inside.
Having said that.. A 'Gay' thread I started got pretty popular.. So I tried to keep that one going heh.

Meh.

Well when I finally had a thread get 1000 posts and 10000 views; it really doesn't matter anymore.

As to moderating, etc on them? Nah. That's the mods job.....

it would be nice to keep and follow every thread i found interesting, or more interesting in concept then to be completely covered by three or four posts. it would also be nice if more threads were.

i seem to be in a majorly small minority though as to what does and is of intrest to me. so i guess i can't really expect to.

I care a great deal about this thread, and that is why I am moving it back to the top.
For my own threads, I have nothing but disgust and rage, which is why I don't make them very often, and why they tend to die off really fast. Unless, of course, I make a thread that involves gays somehow. I've only done that three times (most recently, "On Homophobia"), and every time I do so the Gay Mafia insists on keeping that thread around forever and badgering me with it.

I rarely make threads anyway, except in II. And those, people subscribe to. ;)

I rarely make threads anyway, except in II. And those, people subscribe to. ;)Eh? Jolt automatically subscribes me to any thread I post in... at least I think that's what it does... Isn't that what the little blue tick means?

I used to care deeply about my threads and I would never start one unless I thought it had a great chance of sucess which, for intellectual debating threads, they were. Even if half the posts on a few of them were mine.

Now... I just don't care. I'll throw something out there and forget about it. If people reply then great, and if I feel I can reply to their reply even greater.

Thats my motto! Creepy.

And yeah, I think I've started about 2 threads in my time here. So its not a problem. Apathy solves everything.

I was the same as The Nazz. Used to post a thread then repeatedly bump it in the (usually vain) hope it'd get noticed and people would start posting (or spamming - I'm not bothered) in it. Now it's just: make a thread, bump it the next day if it's fallen below page 2 of the forum, leave it. Though having said that, I'm going to find that snooker thread I made a few days ago.

Heh, that bit of post is awesome and makes your irritatingly poor grasp of grammar seem redundant.

I spat out my tea laughing when I read it.

The first thread I ever made got about 350 replies, and I don't think I said anything after the OP. Then I've had a few that have made it to about 100, but only with me as the main person in the debate, and everyone else arguing with me. Then there have been some that I thought were interesting, such as the UN, that have just died a quick and horrible death.

These days, if it 'goes pink' on the main page (a 'hot topic') then I'm satisfied.

EDIT: My 'Riddle Me This' thread just popped up again. 450 posts and counting... :p

i'm glad you're amused. :D

i generaly do better with the whole grammer thing when it's not, you know, 4 in the morning for the 5th day in a row with poor and insifficiant sleep.

though i never did get the hang of those comma things and i've got into some bad habits from useing messenger. typeing how i speak and so on.

of course, my spelling Never really improves. :(

i do hope that tea wasn't spit out on the keyboard though.

I don't really start threads; I prefer to join ones other people started...and since I almost never read the posts before the most recent page I inadvertently bring the thread closer to the OP's original statements as opposed to drifting further from it.

I find that what I consider to be my more interesting threads tend not to last long, while my less interesting ones seem to keep going long past their best before date ...
