How long have Humans got left?

New Lofeta

Hi, my question for you is simple.

How long do we Humans have left on this Planet, or if you prefer, how long do we have left living life in Civillisations as we do now?

I'd say our Civillisation will have seen it's end by the 22nd Century- Global Warming coupled with no more Oil. Shame we're not moving away from Oil now while we can...

Your thoughts? Should be interesting.

Cilizations are meant to last on average for 10,000 years, for all we know, there may have been several human like civilizatiosn before us, but all evidence of them has been destroyed by ice ages etc.etc.

What exactly do you reckon will be the cause of the end of civilization? I doubt it would be war, as mad as humans may be, I doubt they would manage to obliterate themselves completely.

Global Warming, Probably not, although it will drstically change the world, a great deal of people would survive. The earth naturally heats up and cools down. (It was a huge desert in the time of t-rex :P)

Starvation, nope, Population grows like this: 2, 4, 8, 16 etc.
food production increases like this: 2, 4, 6, 8
so the worst that could happen would be that the earths population would be cut down to a sustainable level.

Food production won't necessarily increase like that. It has increased like that in the past, and since Malthus came up with his (frankly ridiculous) theory, but that's only because it grew to meet demand, as there was no point in it outstripping demand. In the future, food production won't increase like that because we're already reaching the limit of arable land, and technology to increase productivity isn't moving forwards as fast as it did 150 years ago.

The UN estimates the human population will level out at around 11 billion at most, because beyond that we won't be able to feed everyone.

Sorry we have a long and glorious future ahead of us. We'll get into space, build a Dyson sphere, then a topopolis, correct the sun so it doesn't explode, then eventually all suns. We'll spread throughout the galaxy aliens will be met with an open hand or a closed fist whichever is applicable. Eventually civilization will spread from one corner to of the galaxy to the next. Eventually every star will be surrounded by swarming Dyson spheres and nested in topoplii, eventually a great sphere will surround the heart of the galaxy and Man will walk on a livable biosphere millions of light years wide with an atmosphere breathable hundreds of miles up. In the end a Galactic Dyson sphere will surround the Milky Way and we will be as gods.

In the end, we will force the universe to collapse into a final singularity and exploit the fact that under such conditions the universe's computational capacity is advancing faster than the collapse.

We will outrun entropy.

We will simulate an infinite artificial galaxy of infinite possibility using this universe computer. We will live forever.

Or we'll destroy ourselves in a coupla years at most.

Nah. It's just the longest period of time they had (imaginatively called the 'long count'). I think the one we're in at the moment is the fifth. Basically, they had a creation myth (like everyone else), and on Dec. 21st 2012 it'll be the end of the fifth long count from the time the world was supposedly created.

I'm afraid we don't have long at all. We have 45 days (as of now, April 22). Then it will be June 06. Therefore, the numerical date will be 06/06/06.
Other than that, every bottle of root beer I've ever gotten between a month ago and today has had an expiry date of June 05, so obviously, the day after that, they will all go bad because the world will end.

Do you know how many other Prophets predicted the end at 2012, most of whom have had no contact with the Mayan or thier belief that the world will end at the end of 2012?

You mean like the Bible Codists? Who also predicted that WWIII would start after nuclear weapons built by Iraq were found in some valley in Syria in 2005?

And the Mayan calendar doesn't say 'the end of the world' it says 'the end of this cycle of creation'. Supposedly, what happened at the end of the last cycle of creation was that all of man's devices turned against him.

No, no. Singularity and Y2K have nothing to do with each other. Y2K was potentially a very big problem, the extents of which were really unknown but no one wanted to stick around to see what would happen. So, they threw lots and lots of money to solve it. And they did solve it, that's why nothing happened, except for a glitch here and there. Granted, some of the effects (like planes falling from the sky at midnight, or every service just turning off) were pure catastrophist fantasy. Does any one know somebody who admits having spent New Year's eve 2000 hunkered down in a bunker?

The Singularity is when technology has advanced far enough to allow humans to trascend biology, mortality, or both. This could mean that our consciousness can be stored inside a computer to live forever in a vitual universe, or inside a cyborg body, or control cellular ageing, etc. It is, however, speculation, and meant to provoke thought about the future of technology rather than predict it.

People need to stop talking about "running out of oil," like the tank is going to hit empty or something.

As oil becomes more scarce, prices will rise, lowering demand for oil, forcibly weaning people off it. Of course, as this happens, there will be declines in productivity from energy shortages, combined with effects of both severe inflation and unemployment. Energy-intensive industrial agriculture may suffer, and electrical grids may fail, as the market attempts to adjust for energy substitutes which simply don't exist. Famine and geopolitical conflict may ensue, but even then, it's not necessarily an end-of the world scenario.

Don't get me wrong, though, I do believe there are dark times ahead.

How long do we Humans have left on this Planet, or if you prefer, how long do we have left living life in Civillisations as we do now?

I'd say our Civillisation will have seen it's end by the 22nd Century- Global Warming coupled with no more Oil. Shame we're not moving away from Oil now while we can...

civilization in any meaningful sense of the word, has yet to be invented. oil based tecnology and economics will of course end, and with it a lot of things we take for granted will be wildly altered or simply not be there at all. while this could, for all we know, take a few centuries, it could just as easily and more likely is, no more then a matter of a few decades, if that.

if we wait for fuel shortages alone to stop us from being able to keep adding to global warming, well that could take a few centuries, cause there's still a lot more coal in the ground then there is oil.

but we don't need to wait for anything to run out to reduce and ultimately eliminate our dependence on combustion to generate energy and propel transportation. nor need it take nature forcing us to see the advantages of doing so.

other factors could contribute to forcing us to have to rethink our core values.

the radicly altered weather paterns resaulting from global warming could themselves play a major role in our doing so. as could global economic colapse. all three of these things concatinating as they seem to be converging upon will most likely do the trick.

then a lot of people will starve. and those that survive will look at things very differently. especialy what they will come to realize is more and less important.

we could save ourselves a lot future, and possibly quite near future, pain, right now, by considering our priorities and the kind on incentives they actualy create.

we could even invent civilization. before nature and reality forces us to.

We'll have "Left" for as long as we exist!

Or at least, for as long as I exist, considering I am left-handed.

And I am sure there are many other left-handers that will continue to advocate for the word "left" continuing to exist.

Of course, it might change, and I suppose it will in two hundred years.

As to the actual question: Don't bother to ask. Chances are you won't be alive when it happens (assuming we don't blow ourselves up, but then I just hope we won't even know).

As fancy and well thought out as that is, I disagree.

We *have* invented Civillisation. The Pyramids, The Roman Empire (just in general :P), Religion, Science, Law and Order, Government and Democracy.

That said, our Civilisation is far from perfect. Your right in saying we have our priorities mixed up. And, civilisation isn't permament, infact its very easily lost. It depends on everyone doing their jobs (at least for it to grow) and hangs on the Important People doing their jobs well (the Police, Firemen etc).
We lost it in the Dark Ages (least in Europe), and it took us Centuries to get it back.

I think that might happen. We'll lose our Civilisation. Then, slowly rebuild, getting alittle further than we are now. Then we'll lose it again. Then, again, we'll rebuild and get alittle further. Eventually, we probably will get past that (when we get to space :P).

Just think, in 2000 years, people might be going around the Ruins of your House or your City. The Aztecs probably never thought their Cities would become ruins, but they did.

Hmmmmm, trying to imagine Big Ben covered in Greenery and there no real life around it...

The dinosaurs lasted millions of years, and humans will last even longer. I mean, even if a massive plague killed of 99% of the population, really, there would still be SOME people who survive. Remember that the Black Death killed "only" 1/2 of the world population at the time. The fact is, there are 6 billion people on Earth, and some of them will be genetically resistant to any plague, or hide in some mine shaft somewhere like in Professor Strangelove. Even if a giant asteriod hit and covered the world in smoke, humans are extremely intelligent and adaptive and would find some way to survive. Hell, the mammals in prehistoric times survived a meteor strike, and so can we.

As for the distant future, "humans" as we know them will probably exist in small numbers, if at all, because we will probably have all kinds of genetic enhancements that make us more survivable. But there are just soo many people, and humans are just soo adaptive, that I see us existing for a very long time.

According to what I used to think as a kid, we have about a year left. My theory was that I (and the rest of the human race at that point in time) was never going to become older than 20, so we have between 6-18 month. By the way, I used to have a really good explanation for this, but I just don't remeber what it is.

Starvation, nope, Population grows like this: 2, 4, 8, 16 etc.
food production increases like this: 2, 4, 6, 8
so the worst that could happen would be that the earths population would be cut down to a sustainable level.

No. Population has been doubling for only 50-60 years, on a thirty year basis. Meanwhile, around 1900, one acre of crop land would produce only 1 ton of potatos. Nowadays, 1 acre produces in excess of 10 tons. If population grew and shrank to reflect available food, we should have more than 10 billion people on earth.
