Harry Potter is evil!

So we all know that Harry Potter books lead people to witchcraft, satanism and suicide.

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=398539

http://www.11alive.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=78859

In addition to that, I've now determined that I'm suffering under a satanic curse from Harry Potter. I've had numerous car problems since I and my alter-ego Jesussaves began speaking out on the evils of Harry Potter. Today the driver's side windshield wiper on my car broke, and it's supposed to rain all day and into tomorrow. Still I won't be detered from pointing out the evil influence and the danger of these horrible, satanic books.

EDIT: Oh, this is my 10,000th post. Yay me!

Hmmm...I don't like the Harry Potter books (poorly written, limited creatively, etc.), but you've got to be a moron to think that they are a widespread cause of kids practicing witchcraft or becoming 'Satanists'.

Harry Potter cannot be anything but the handiwork of the Devil himself, obviously. Anything that makes reference to withcraft and magic is inspired by his evil influence. Now the satanists in Hollywood are using the franchise to promote the human sacrifice, stem-cell research, and the homosexual agenda to innocent young children. Just think of how corrupted your kids would be if they saw KIDS THEIR OWN AGE casting magical spells, killing "mandrakes" (which resemble babies), and worshipping Satan. "Jesus Killer" Rowling herself has admitted to devoting her life to the Kabbalah and the Satanic Bible so that she could do Satan's work by writing these truly horrible stories. You should take this more seriously, our childrens' fragile little minds are being warped by this evil.

Ugh... Morons. Maybe if your kids didn't confuse reality with fantasy, and maybe actually researched these secular religions instead of just thinking that drawing an upside down pentagram and sacrificing a goat will get you magical powers, this kind of crap wouldn't be happening! Satanism isn't really all it's cracked up to be. It's not about sacrificing people and goats. I think one of their rules is like, "Do what you want, just don't harm anyone else in the process", or something like that. These kids aren't even Satanists, even if they are REAL kids and not just planted to make the Harry Potter books look bad. Well, they are bad, I mean, they absolutely SUCK, but if they drive your kids to be Satanists, well, your kids are just morons. Oh, and that "The Onion" site, it's essentially a bunch of bullshit. I don't think Rowelling or whatever her name is would actually promote the fact that the Harry Potter books promote Satanism. And so what if kids start learning about real secular religions because they read a Harry Potter book? Most secular religions aren't "Evil". Hell, just because they renounce the Christian God doesn't mean their evil. Wicca is a relatively peaceful religion. So is Satanism. These people are just retarded beyond belief.

there are loony people in this world. when ever something in their life is not right they look to something else to be the cause of it. More then often they also seem to carry a label as christian. so by association other people see it as all christians doing stupid shit like this.

i was at a theater when the first harry potter movie came out. the popcorn bags had harry potter on it to promote the film. and some group of ladies made a deal out of it and demanded that they were given different popcorn bags because they saw harry potter as evil.

what the hell, they made me think christians are nutcases and i am a christian.

I dont understand people who are against books such as the works of JK Rowling. She is an amazing writer and has written a series of books for any ages and there arent any laws against it. Religions i find are becoming more and more conservative to things going on in the real world. the pen may be mightier than the sword but its not like people actually act on it. Its called Fiction. Why dont the religious focus on more important matters like, bullying, war and discrimination? This book is promoting none of those and they are all existant in everyones culture. Focus on something that will impact the world way more than just a book. :)

Absolute blasphemy. They depict Jesus as a lion. Lions are sinfull, foul-smelling creatures. They've even been known to eat Christians!

Actually I'm kidding about the whole thing.
Actually the Lion was only implied to be Jesus.
Lions fornicate quite a lot, too. Which reminds me of what is bound to happen in that last HP book.

Harry and Hagrid are directly responsible for the destruction of our national species, the Centaur. Centaur ownership is now strictly regulated due to declining populations. We have been fostering research into interspecies cloning to help build their stocks, but so far those have been fruitless. It is kind of difficult to mate a human male to a 14 hand mare.

Hmmm...I don't like the Harry Potter books (poorly written, limited creatively, etc.), but you've got to be a moron to think that they are a widespread cause of kids practicing witchcraft or becoming 'Satanists'.

Sorry to be injecting seriousness into a humour thread... but, I actually thought the Harry Potter books to be surprisingly creative.

(And, let's face it, Stephen King is a living testament to the fact that there are a lot of books MORE poorly written).

Just look at one character, and the depth involved... despite the fact that these are childrens books...

Example: Lord Voldemort

Born Tom Marvolo Riddle, his 'adult' name is an anagram, "I am Lord Voldemort"...

So - Riddle's name is, itself, a riddle.

What does 'voldemort' mean? It's obviously derived from French (something Rowling does a few times) and means either 'theft of death' (which ties in with his followers being 'death eaters'... or 'flight from death' (which is a characteristic explored repeatedly throughout the books).

So - even his name has symbolism, and Rowling is clever enough to follow BOTH paths of symolism in the text.

(Possibly, the name is also supposed to be understood as stemming from 'vouloir' - 'to wish'? Which would also explain the 'deathwish' which Potter and Voldemort seem to share...)

Voldemort (being French) is also pronounced almost identically to the German Waldemar (incidentally, a Mesmerist created by Poe) - which is, in turn, a corruption of Vladimir (the 'true' identity of Dracula).

Some people have also commented on the fact that Voldemort sounds much like the German word for 'genocide' (Volkermord)... which would also fit with his approach to 'muggles'.

How much is accident, and how much is design? Hard to be sure... but Rowling seems to have really invested a character with a degree of symbolism and complexity very rare in 'children's stories'. And, she's done all this, while making the books an easy read... and spawning a million-dollar movie franchise.

My uncle did that when he was young. At the start of a lesson in religion (then only christian religion), he told the teacher that he refused to take the class because he was an atheist. The teacher asked him if he had ever read the bible (he hadn't), then told him he knew nothing of the subject. So my uncle read the whole thing and went back and told the teacher that he was still an atheist. He didn't need to go back.

Has HP done something like that for anyone? Didn't think so... Heralds of Satan do not offer help!

And, if that is all you get from it, then I'd argue you are just superficially reading.

Christians made a big fuss about Harry Potter using magic, about the evils of witchcraft, etc... yet, what was the 'magic' that keeps protecting him from the attacks of Voldemort? What is the 'lesson' behind the Mirror of Erised?

I can tell you in two sentences what this book is all about. It a devise you By lucifer himself to conquer the minds of the innocent and naive children. It is no coinsedence that each book has been getting darker and darker. After having complete complete control of them by the seventh book he will make the children his minions and wage a war against all that is good.

But do not be alarmed i have a solution. all we have to do is kill all the children now and Satan will never come to power.

Harry Potter is in an evil conspiracy with Michael Jackson, Elmer Fudd, a piece of tin foil, and Osama bin Laden to take over the world and replace all of the good, wholesome pie with decadent and foul-tasting cake! And that's not all -- soon they will start shipping awful beer first to Europe, then the rest of the world, phasing out all of the better brands until we're all forced to drink piss and enjoy it!

Faced with something of this magnitude I'd obviously become a hardline Satanist immediately and start offering blood sacrifices of innocent virgins and small babies to Hell while regularly going around maiming sickeningly cute little bunnies, committing bestiality and necrophilia, and using pages of the Bible to clean up after my dog. No. I didn't like Tron. Didn't much like the Matrix, either, now I come to think about it.

You want parallels between HP and other literature?

Tom Brown's Schooldays - a not particularly bright kid is sent off to boarding school.
The Jungle Book - at the start of the book, Mowgli's 'mother' (the she-wolf) is killed by Shere Khan. Similarly at the start of the Potter saga, Harry's parents are both killed by Voldemort. Harry later learns, as Mowgli does, that he must kill Voldemort (Shere Khan) or will die at his hand.
You may or may not have heard of the Earthsea books in which a boy with a talent for magic is sent off to a wizard school.
Also, in Bewitched (the TV series), Samantha's aunts run a witches' school.

And then there's the Worst Witch books and the Books of Magic. Though I believe Neil Gaiman has gone on record saying he believes the (extreme) similarities between Tim Hunter and Harry Potter are just a coincidence.

I don't think you wasted your time. I was just thinking about poking fun at you just for the hell of it, but then I remembered that old saying about how people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I've analyzed the bejeezus out of 100s horror novels, stories, and movies, dissecting the methods of the genre and the roots of folklore in it for my art and my writing -- often stretching the point beyond all tolerance with such drek as the Bloodstone movie series. I try to act like it's "research" when, really, I just like cheap B movies.

I highly recommend Harry Potter as children's literature. I find some of the more eager adult devotees slightly unnerving, though. They're even more enthusiastic than Star Trek fiends.

Good point on the Earthsea thing... although I think the fact that Rowling's Hogwarts is just so 'old English grammar-school' sets it apart somewhat... It is difficult to not make SOME parallels, in a culture that boasts access to three millenia or more of storytelling, though. And, if one thinks one has a good story about starcrossed lovers, one shouldn't refrain from following that story just because Romea and Juliet (or Tristan and Isolde) got there before us.

Neil Gaiman seems quite happy with the Potter franchise... so, even if it does milk his material, I think it is taken more as flattery than theft. Dave McKean is even on board on the Potter movie project now (design work for the third and fourth installments, I believe).

I'm not offended, or anything. :)

Initially - I didn't even like the Potter franchise. It seems too direct a parallel to the Tim Hunter stories.... the characters are even remarkably similar looking. But, I became aware that Rowling is one of very few writers who cares about the 'fairytale' elements... her 'elves' are traditional fairytale characters, not the common 'post-Lord-of-the-Rings' variety, and she knows there is a difference between a Griffon and a Hippogriff.

And, she also works in the shadows... her characters are not two dimensional, and she has a whole history for them stretching back centuries... and, of course - even little things like 'names' are given an unusual degree of attention...

True. I'm not so unhappy with the similarities between HP and other books, although it does seem that JK Rowling has taken ideas from everywhere and stitched them together as her own, rather than actually injecting anything new into them. It's more the praise it gets from the media, saying that they're so wonderfully creative and that it's great that she's managed to get kids interested in reading. Shortly after the second book came out I tried to get an acquaintance who loved HP to read Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad (Truckers, Diggers and Wings) and the Carpet People, telling him that it was fantasy aimed at kids, just like HP, but he refused on the grounds it wasn't written by Rowling. Now, I know this is only one case, but that's not really getting him interested in reading, is it?

Yeah. I hope that people (adults as well) who read HP will go on to read more fantasy. Neil Gaiman's a brilliant writer, so if he gets more readers as a result, that can only be a good thing. I'm reading American Gods at the moment, and it's one of the best books I've read in years.

I know there's creativity on that level, but I was referring to the general idea. A wizard school? Because that's never been done before...

So much of the general framework of the books is clichéd fantasy writing.
Everything has been done before. Now it is a race to see how you can fool people into beleiving it is a new concept.

Well, they ARE creative... and, although it's hard to be NEW, I think Rowling brought something to the table. You have to admit, she's done some impressive work - explaining how this whole 'second culture' exists behind or beyond what we 'see' everday. It's one of the best 'hidden agenda' backdrops I've seen, outside of White Wolf's "World of Darkness".

I know what you mean about 'interest in reading'... but the fact is, most kids apparently DON'T read.... not even ONE author. My seven-year-old is the only child in her class that reads for pleasure.

Neil Gaiman IS fantastic. I recently added his (and McKean's) film "Mirrormask" to my collection. Quite spectacular - and so much more than just pretty, it is another of those pieces that responds in proportion to the effort you invest. It's a shame he's so unknown... his 'children's story', "Coraline" is quite an impressive piece of work, and my daughter's favourite book.

It kind of suggests that our sins weren't that bad to begin with, since they only required one guy to die for them and he didn't have to stay dead for more than a few days.

But God makes no distinction between "bad" and "not-so-bad" sins. A man who steals a raisin is equally as evil as a man who rapes and kills other women's husbands, and both are going to hell; at least, that's what the fundamentalists appear to believe. Although no surprise really, considering that there are only some angels and God Himself in heaven, it must actually be pretty boring around there. ;)

Nah, it can be the same old same old. The challenge is to retell it well -- fresh perspective and insights, enjoyable style, etc. Nobody wants to read crappy versions of good stories, but new good versions of good stories -- there's always an audience for that.

So we all know that Harry Potter books lead people to witchcraft, satanism and suicide.

What's that on the first link about Origin of the Species being a satanic book?
Do people seriously think like that or is it a joke?

Wait, wait, wait, there's a very easy way to decide what to do with her.
Does she weigh the same as a duck?
Yes. Therefore she must be made into a bridge!

Impressive length of a thread for a joke. More impressive that half the people didn't get it. I tried to read the Bible once. I think I got to Genesis 2... I will read the whole thing, someday when I don't have three or four shelves of books to read.

As for the Harry Potter Pervert thing, has anyone seen the look on her face? I don't think he's the only perverted one there...

Grave_n_idle, nice HP scholarship!
Most, if not all, fiction draws on the same tropes/memes/cliches/archetypes when it's created. Anyone able to name something totally original? I don't think I can... Evenrue said it better, actually.

Guys their books. Anything to get kids to read is top in my book. Go after Cat in the Hat which encourages kids to get away with lying to their parents. I wrote a paper about why Harry Potter is good. Anyone wanting to read it e-mail me at drmizuno@yahoo.com and no one who isn't serious about seeing how the book can actually RELATE to the bible. ONLY those with open minds.
