Torrent sites for sure, but mainly for full albums.
LimeWire for single average quality songs.

Where is nationstates hosted? In most places in the world downloading music for free is not illegal, as long as you don't do it for profit.

But to answer the question: Best way is to download a program called "Azureus" and then go to a website called "torrentspy" and search for the album you wish to download.

If I was American and wanted to break the law (which I'm not, but I would), I would definatly use torrent, as it is next to impossible for the record industry to play big brother with that system of downloading.

The Apple legal department informs me you should be refering to their services as iTunes. :p

The Apple legal department can bite my shiny metal ass.

But where Jolt is hosted is a good question. Judging by the co.uk domain suffix, it is most likely hosted in the United Kingdom.

Azureus is for idiots. μtorrent, bitcomet, and ktorrent are what you should use.

if i were to admit i download...
i would suggest bearshare. download the program, search for music, hit 'download' and - acbracadabra - songs appear on your computer!
...but this is just what someone, somewhere, sometime might have told me, once.

That is horridly ad-filled, much like Kazaa.

Nothing has ads like KaZaA. Bearshare my try to match KaZaA'a malware, but it will never succeed.

What are some of BitTornado's special features?

BitTornado doesn't allow to download single files from batch torrents, if I remember correctly.

I use BitComet myself.

That is why I use bitcomet. Ktorrent also supports this feature, but does require you to know what Linux is.

I swear by allofmp3.com. I like getting my music in whatever bitrate and format my ears desire.

I like my Azureus. As soon as you open the .torrent file, it allows you to pick which songs/files to download/not to download, then it's easy to set priorities. It's all most people need in a torrent program, and it's very simple to use for beginners.

Soulseek I find is the best for rare stuff and bootlegs.

I use Ares. Does the job, and it's not just music you can download. As for legal, well I'm not a lawyer.

i would say find sites that are about the kinds of music you like that have and offer legitimately free samples. for example some music group sites will offer one or two pretty good samples of their work.

on the other hand. if cost is not an obstical, then of course, there are all sorts of places were you can pay to download as much and whatever your heart desires. still again it would be good to go to the sites of the bands and genre's you like rather then the big 'supermarket' sites and record companies, because that way you'll be actualy contributing to the people who make the kind of music you like instead of just fattining some middleman who could care less about anything but your money.

I just use whatever bittorrent site I can find the torrents on. A lot of stuff I download is RIAA/BPI 'safe' so the legality doesn't really bother me so much. But if you're going to download music from big names, chances are that the record company they're signed to is part of the RIAA, so don't do it.

Remember. Home taping is killing music.

i'm hoping that last line was intended as cynasizem!

industry organizations like riaa are what is killing real creativity, not so much killing as driving it underground, everywhere. not just in music but everywhere else too.

and i'm sorry to sound like a toad or a troll or whatever you want to call it, but if anyone is downloading "big names" just because the're big names, and not the sounds they like because the're the sounds they like, then the're an effing idiot.

Yeah, I was taking the piss. The music industry bitched like hell about home taping, but from then to the late 90s their revenues only increased.

At the moment, bands are doing quite well out of downloading. They might have decreased album and single sales, but it means that touring (from which they make most of their money anyway) has increased, as have ticket prices for gigs. It's just the music industry that's pissed, because they make their money from record sales.

I read yesterday that the DRM crap on games and some music and films actually makes them use more power, can even cut iPod battery life by a third. their anti piracy crap is gonna force everyone to pirate eventually. It like a loan shark that breaks your legs in advance.

I think bitlord is good for torrents, and kazaa lite for other stuff. mainly porn. I wanted that song free fallin by tom petty but all the files are just 3 minutes ish of silence. goddamn it.

If we're talking legal, ALLOFMP3.com. This site is 100% legal, at least for now, and they charge 2 cents per megabyte -- usually about 8 cents a song. And it IS legal. It's a russian site so they pay the record companies in russian rubles, which are worth very little, and then they can charge such low prices to US customers. And they don't steal your credit card or anything. ;)

EDIT: Also there's no DRM on the songs: you can copy them and email them to your friends as much as you want. And another thing, you can download songs in any format you want, not just mp3, also ogg vorbis, WMA, MPEG-4, and MPC, whatever the hell that is.

EDIT: Read the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AllOfMP3.com
