should I be worried?

my 2 year old just came and asked me if she could borrow the pepper shaker, she wants to see if she can learn to sneeze with her eyes open, to prove to the 4 year old that if she does her eyes won't pop out of her head.............

oh, and can you sneeze with your eyes open? (not you personally, but you know can a person?)

I can't remember if it's impossible or just really hard.

do you have a source for that?

and if so.... should I let her try anyway? I mean all of her other science experiments I already know the outcome of, I suppose this one would be no different (except this time I really don't know)

I wouldn't, there was that episode of ER where someone did it and their eyeball came out

No, it is physically impossible to do. Your brain overrides that part you think controls the eyelids.

That is also why you cannot kill yourself by merely holding your breath- your medulla overrides your control.

Freaky.

It's impossible. I've tried very hard, but the reflex is just too strong.

I don't think the eyes pop out. My glasses have gone flying a couple of times, though.

Sorted. (http://www.ratlab.co.uk/sneezeeyes.htm) It is possible to sneeze without closing your eyes, but only if you're born that way, and you cannot sneeze out your eyes.

Well it did happen on ER after they froze some guys eye to do something to it. I stress it happened on ER so I don't know whether it'd happen in real life, I've tried to do it loads of times and never succeeded.

Ashmoria

well she'll get pepper everywhere. itll get in her eyes and make her cry. she'll snuffle up lots of it before she sneezes. it will irritate the inside of her nose and make her cry.

no i dont think its dangerous.

Since it seems you can sneeze with your eyes open the question now becomes, does pepper really make you sneeze?

Reminds me of a Calvin and Hobbes comic. Wish I could find the image, but here's the dialogue.
Calvin: Hey Dad, I have a question.
Dad: Sure Calvin. What do you want to know?
Calvin: If you plugged up your nose and mouth right before you sneezed, would the sneeze go out your eyes, or would your head explode?
Dad: I was kind of hoping you had a math problem or something.
Calvin: ... Either way I'm scared to try it.

actually it does, I found out when my 4 year old got mad because I was at work and shoved a rasin up her nose, the baby sitter put some pepper under her nose and made her sneeze it out, so I didn't have to come home from work. ;)

Yes it is messy, but proper muscle control can let you stop peeing long enough to sneeze. As an added bonus the same muscles let you delay orgasm, for hours if you want.

okay, so she just sneezed with one eye partially opened, we found out that powdered sugar seems to have a "make you sneeze" affect without the burning of pepper or cinnamin (which we also tried)

anyway, both of her eyes seem to still be in place, so they are trying to duplicate the experiment this time on video, if we accomplish that I will post it.

45 minutes of continual sex is my current record. I'm sure I've gone longer than that, but I didn't time it. it's the same muscle group that makes your erection "jump" when you contract it. The stronger the jump the stronger the muscles and the more control you can exercise. Stopping a urine stream half way through isn't even remotely difficult.

practice stopping your pee mid stream then when you figure out what muscles those are, you can practice throughout the day. (at least that's how girls do it, guys may be slightly different)

yeah, they have something to do with orgasm in girls too, (not sure what) but when I first started to do it, I used to get tinglys LOL

(oh, and in case you were wondering, they tell women to do it early in pregnancy so that when the baby sits on your bladder later you have better pee control, and also something about it being an easier delivery or something)

I'd always presumed this was something most guys knew how to do. I mean it's fairly obvious. Working with the timing you can get some fairly impressive results, but it can be frustrating if you end up delaying more than you want to.

With girls, it strengthens the muscles that contract during orgasm, making the orgasm itself more sustained and powerful (at least, that's what I've read).

With guys, it gives them more control over when to orgasm.

true.

alas, she has turned her attention elsewhere, as two year olds often do. She has decided that her sister was wrong about her eyes popping out, and is now taking apart an old telepone so that she can put it back together in working order in hopes that she can convince my husband to let her try it with his computer (which I don't see happening any time soon)

At 2 she wants to disassemble a computer? Honestly they're not that complicated, a kid that small could easily take one to pieces. Though it may or may not work due to static discharge if she doesn't know how to avoid it.

she is more worried about putting it back together in working order, and the only computer I have for her to practice on doesn't have a hard drive, so she could mess with it, but without me switching my hard drive over to it, we wouldn't know if it worked or not. I don't see me trusting my two year old with my hard drive though.

yeah, but I have seen the kid put together puzzles before, I could see her popping capacitors off my mother board to make things fit where they don't go, hence the practice with a phone that I can throw away. (although it wouldn't really harm my hard drive if she tore up the mother board...hmm......)
