Following the recent shooting of Obie Trice and the late Proof it have wondered why it is when rappers hit the big time, why can they leave the street life behind, why must they carry guns and get shot up for the most pointless reasons???

Because their intent is avaricious and extremely low-brow.
Their egos are completely disproportionate to all realities except the ones they make other people believe in (or that other wannabe punks want to indulge in).
Not soon enough IMO, their BS is already too much collateral as it is.

Because they're idiots who are trying to keep their "street cred" up.

Because you never quite escape that environment and mindset, even if you do get a multi-million dollar contract.

However, there are many rappers who have their security around them, but generally don't get in trouble. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre...hell, even Snoop these days.

And then there are the rappers that aren't gangsta at all, like Talib Kweli, Mos Def or De La Soul.

With the exception of Snoop Dog, I don’t know who any of those people you just mentioned are.:D

As for why some rappers don’t leave the gansta life behind, it’s probably the same reason that country music *ahem* artists continue to drive dodges and go to the rodeo long after making millions. People can change, just not very often and usually not very drastically.

So you propose they should dress in Cashmere with elegant vests and reading glasses?
They do have an image to keep up.

he was shot while he was driving a car. he chooses to live in detroit. you only hear about obie being shot because he is a celebrity rapper. do you know how many people are shot in detroit in a regular basis? its a sterotype. this proves a point that obie trice said himself: "This is living in Detroit, and that's all," said Trice. "You hear about it because it's me, I got ties to Eminem or whatever, but I got people that are out there dealing with it every single day where I’m from."

Frankly, many rapsters (such as the disturbingly popular 50 cent) maintain their gang affiliations and relationships. This alone accounts for a significant proportion of rapper violence.

I'm far too white to answer that question.
