My students are researching a debate on the net, for their conflict unit in English, and I need some places to direct them to.

The topics i need help with are:

Has technology destroyed privacy?

Is grafitti public art or a public nuisance?

Do violent TV/movies/video games cause real-life violence?

Should music videos be rated like movies?

Does rap music degrade women?

Should emo/heavy metal be banned?

BTW: These are all topics my students came up with. I'm very proud! :D

Alas, I can't find anything outside of wikipedia without spending time researching it; (and i'm assuming you don't care for my opinion, which doesn't count for a source and is obvious anyway) but try looking up info on the PMRC for a "for" side.

I can't think of any personally on the spot. But wiki should have articles giving at least a good summary of the ideas behind the topics, which can then be looked at more indepth by looking at the external sites they link to.

This is wiki's article on graffiti.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graffiti
It contains: lots of sites that can be looked at; recent laws that have come into place; a list of artists; pictures, varying from simple tags, to digital graffit, to a graffiti competition, to a graffitied Berlin wall.

... hahaha, one of the sites contains a video of Air Force One being tagged!

Anyway, I hope that helps... possibly.

I wouldn't mind a few other opinions to help me prompt my students' thinking.

And I never thought to look in wiki, which they can access from school.

Well, as an "against" case in the "does rap degrade women" topic, there's the late 80's/early 90's group Public Enemy, whom you have probably heard of. Most of their songs revolve around social issues and they don't degrade women.

generally when you circumvent the procedures at a school, and you're in a teacher capacity, you don't fare too well when they catch you.

There's only ONE place you'd need to point out to them:

:D

(As for the questions:
Has technology destroyed privacy?
-No. Only if used to intrude into your home is has.
Is grafitti public art or a public nuisance?
-Pictures on old factory buildings, no.
-Tags on churches and trains, yes, absolutely!
Do violent TV/movies/video games cause real-life violence?
-Only if immature people watch/play them and don't know how to behave themselves.
Should music videos be rated like movies?
-No. Some should be unrated, though. Do away with this fuzzy stuff. It annoys me to no end!
Does rap music degrade women?
Some of it certainly. Just take a look at 2LiveCrew :D
Should emo be banned?
-Yes. Definitely so.
Should heavy metal be banned?
-Are you completely out of your mind? (Go ahead, ask your students! They're nuts!!! And tell'em I said "Hi!" ;))

Has technology destroyed privacy?
Encourage them to read 1984 or similar pieces of literature, or to take a look into totalitarian dictatorships, where the concept of privacy is pretty much non-existent. It's not really for or against, but gives them a new angle of looking at it.

Is grafitti public art or a public nuisance?
Can't help here...

Do violent TV/movies/video games cause real-life violence?
How old are the kids? This is something they're likely to be directly affected by, so they should have opinions on it anyway.

Should music videos be rated like movies?
Again, encourage alternative thinking - do we need a rating system?

Does rap music degrade women?
The music or the videos? Encourage alternative thinking...

Should emo/heavy metal be banned?
No. Assuming you're in a first world country, then you're not living in a dictatorship. Besides, how would this be enforced?

Yeah, I know that doesn't help directly, it's just my opinion. But they shouldn't just look at it based on their own opinion of the music, they should think about other things that affect this/affected by this.

BTW: These are all topics my students came up with. I'm very proud! :D
You should be, I'm quite impressed myself.
