Does U.N. really mean Unthinking Nincompoops? (the real world U.N.)

I was up late and just flipping through the channels on my dorm's cable, and I happened upon the "Most Ridiculous Item of the Day" section on the O'Reilly Factor. The U.N. has voted  Iran  into their committee (or whatever it is) responsible for STOPPING the spread of nuclear weapons. I don't know about you, but"fox guarding the henhouse" pops into my mind immediately. :headbang:

I have very little confidence in institutions like the U.N. now. The League of Nations was a complete failure because the U.S. never joined. We joined into the U.N. and it's doing better but is unfortunately still extremely %^$#ed up.

I know that no one and nothing can be perfect, but this is beyond ridiculous. I understand the logic  that maybe giving them such a position will encourage them stick the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, but I seriously doubt that it will work.

What are your thoughts?
Is the U.N. really effective? Will its efforts to :fluffle: maintain peace generally succeed or will they fail miserably :upyours::eek: :mp5: ?

I know it's not quite your first post but this is truly an absolute shocker.

Because nuclear power nations shouldn't be involved in the process of nuclear safety?

The United Nations is an organization which, considering the difficult problems that face the world today, is still needed. It is need of reform (and plenty of it, starting with revising the methods of selecting members to special committees) although it should not be spurned entirely. It is still the most politically powerful international organization in the world, and as such it retains its usefulness and should continue to function, pending needed reforms as well.

More like nations that advocate wiping other nations off the face of the earth should be controlled, not making policy.

If you follow the chain of events, it is clearly Iran sticking its finger up, the UN looking shocked and then the US shooting them both.

Duh.

I'm sorry, but The O'Reilly Factor just isn't the most credible and enlightening thing on TV IMO.
