Smarts or Riches

I am surrounded by bitter intellectuals who are bright, but pissed off at everything. Being a sciencey kind of guy I tend to think that it's better to be smart than wealthy, but recently a friend told me that it is the rich folk who are really the clever ones. Like when they went straight for the money by doing sales and management, while the book-smart kids end up in grad school, penniless and powerless.

Which way would you fall?

isnt there some way of having the best of both worlds?
don't some smart people end up really rich??

nevertheless, i am on the right track to becoming penniless

and aint it always the way that its the bright ones who are the pissed off ones. they're smart enough to realise the world's getting screwed, but in completely the wrong profession and section of society to do a darned thing about it all.

I wouldn't care either way. Smartness/richness != happiness

I'll be penniless and powerless, and quite happy to accept that. You don't need loads of money or power to have a good life.

It's a matter of gaining happiness. It's wrong to say that riches don't equal happiness...to some people, riches are a goal to be achieved, and achieving that goal makes them happy.

People have different priorities, and if you have made the right choice, you will never doubt it.

Suffice to say that becoming rich usually requires a lot of work and a lot of smarts, just like getting a doctorate and doing sciency stuff (some would say that it requires more).
