Could you...live in it? If you're legally allowed to, I'd consider it.

You wouldn't want to live in Eastern Washington. Really. It's sorta like living in the saharra. Hot as hell (when it's not freezing, that is), more tumbleweed than you know what to do with, no rain, no human life, no animal life, just hills in every direction.

You'd die of boredom (or heat stroke) in a week.

Current bid is more than $200,000, so I suppose I could afford to go for about one-fiftiethsies. Eh, that's still more than a mile's worth of Missile Base, though, definitely worth it.
Such a shame I'd have to go to Washington to enjoy it, if only they'd had the foresight to build one of those near NYC.

It's 57 acres, do you have any idea how much 57 acres costs? Damn. The current bid is only $220k. If the state would let you live in it (they might after serious upgrades), it would be a nice purchase, well besides the drive to the closest city.

And then you can convert the missile base into a scientific research facility and conduct all sorts of experiments there... okay that's starting to get spooky.

I have a pretty good idea - my little bro just recently bought 100 acres of Iowa farm land. :)

 c'mon, we should start a pool. I'm sure if we all chip in we can buy it. If we can get 220 people to spend $1000 we can afford it.;)

I'd have to ask though. Who actually thought this was serious? Even if it was a decommissioned Silo, I don't quite see any government, least of all the US govt, just selling off their missile sites cause they don't use it anymore.

That being said, I think it would be something certainly worth quite a bit for the conversation piece it could be.

"Man, renovating my home is a pain in the ass. It's a real pain getting stuff from the truck to the rooms, but it's sturdy. Real sturdy."

"So what kind of house is this? A condo somewhere?"

"Nope, it's a missile silo."

Sure it's serious. Many of these decommisssioned silos have been in private hands for decades.

CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Central/08/02/silo.sweet.silo/) had a thing on this a while back.

Here's more:

Advancements in solid fuel rocket technology made the Atlas system obsolete and by 1965 all of the Atlas complexes had been decommissioned and closed. Equipment that the Air Force deemed classified or reuseable elsewhere was removed. Most of the properties were then returned to previous land owners or given to a local government entity. Many of the properties would wind up in the hands of the local school districts, some of which are still owned by that school district to this day. One of the Atlas E complexes located in Kansas was turned into a high school by the district it was given to. Many of the Atlas silo properties have been sold to private owners and a few of them either have been or are currently being renovated into underground homes. This type of unique home has been featured in many newspaper, magazine and TV reports all over the world. Anyone having an interest in the possibility of purchasing a missile silo property of your own should contact Ed Peden at 20th Century Castles in Dover, Kansas. Mr. Peden is the leading authority in the United States on acquiring this type of unique real estate property.

Missile bases find new purpose

Sites have become school, home, drug lab

By PAUL EAKINS
The Capital-Journal

Anthony Basel had a front-row seat to the changing face of the Cold War in the 1960s.

In 1969, Basel broke ground at Jackson Heights High School, which until 1964 had been a nuclear missile base.

Basel had been on the construction crew that built the military complex five miles north of Holton. He was the last civilian at the site before the military officially took control in 1961, and, as a backhoe operator, he was the first one to begin the renovations that would transform the missile base into a place of learning.

The school district bought the complex for $1 from the federal government, and Basel said he was proud and excited to see the building transformed into something that would benefit the community.

"I was tickled to death," he said, "and I think the taxpayers in the district were, too."

Basel, who was a custodian at the school for 22 years, saw the building undergo incredible changes. He saw the missile bay become a bus garage, the command center turned into a classroom, and teenagers from area communities replace the military officers who once patrolled the grounds.

The Jackson County silo was one of many in Kansas that were put to new uses as the military shut them down in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, closing the last one in 1986. School districts, companies and private buyers took advantage of the opportunity to possess the expansive, virtually impregnable fortresses.

that shit is CHERRY. "hey babe, wanna come back to my FUCKING MISSILE SILO?"

Of course, then you'd have to add... "Great! It's just a 6 hour drive, since it's way out in the middle of nowhere. But it's great, it's big and cold and empty and kinda creepy and... uh, big, and... uh... hey where are you going?"

You are definately allowed to live in them. Will a little searching you can find people who do, and every once in a while there's someone on the Travel Channel, or something along those lines, who has converted one for living.

I wouldn't even consider placing a bid without looking at the property.

I noticed none of the photos were of the underground facility. Good possibility it's flooded and or in such a state of disrepair as to be deemed uninhabitable. I've heard of many that were in such a state.
