Mardi Grass!

It's that time of year again, my red eyed, pinko-liberal, student, friends! And yours truly will be heading down Nimbin way in a aptly appropriate V-Dub and an ounce of weed, with a group of suitably stoned friends.

For those of you unfortunate enough to live in a country other then Australia, Mardi Grass is an annual marijuana legalization rally held in the town of nimbin. Nimbin is well known as being the site where thousands of hippies leaving the Age of Aquarius Festival decided to settle and start an alternate society. This experiment continues through to today, with mixed results. Even the police have freely called Nimbin a "unique society" and generally will turn a blind eye to consumption of marjuana in public and private.

A warning to visitors who have not been before. Marijuana is freely available at every shop, corner and front garden. Whilst the town is engulfed every Sunday with pseudo-liberal parents dragging their kids to 'experience some culture', kids really don't find eating vegan buffet and drinking organic smoothies that fun. So spare them the ordeal and take them to Dreamworld like a good parent would.

For those of us who walk the bohemian line and come from the North-side of Brisbane, it's a chance to pay homage to the hippy culture our parents embraced before they buckled down and got rich exploiting the masses.

All in all, Mardi Grass is good, clean, fun and a great opportunity to get high and have some "good, clean, christian fun" ;)

Hmmm... I was waiting for a 4/20 thread. I'm not from Australia, and It's not legal where I live (at least not according to the Federal Government, but our council disagrees...), but I know plenty of people who will be celebrating their own 'Mardi Grass' today.

Well 4/20 isn't really celibrated here. If it was, it would have been yesterday. That said, I believe UQ (University of Queensland) had a couple "smoke ins".

Marjuana is very much illegal here to, but according the Queensland Police over 50% of the adult population has smoked it in the past year.

For those who are going please be considerate of local police. They are generally very considerate and if you show respect they are normally quite good. Just don't go lighting up right in the faces.

Excellent. Yet another reason to move to Australia.

And here I was set to tell you that you spelled Mardi Gras (http://www.mardigras.com/) wrong, and it was over almost two months ago anyways! :D
