symptoms of xenophobia (a handy checklist)

If you find yourself meeting three or more of the following conditions, you are almost certainly a xenophobe.

I'm providing this checklist so you can learn the truth about yourself, and be more honest in your dealings with other people.

* You equate "immigration" with "invasion
* You believe you don't hate and fear foreigners, you just don't want them anywhere near you
* You view your government or current administration as being a "traitor" if they don't share your border control viewpoint
* You think all immigrants should be deported
* You refer to illegal immigrants as "illegals"
* You believe immigrants wish to make your ethnicity into a minority by out-breeding your ethnicity
* You think there is a politically-correct conspiracy to suppress the threat posed by immigration
* You think that immigration turns the new country into the old one.
* You assume that people of a certain ethnicity are immigrants or illegal immigrants.

and lastly,

* You wish someone would finally just come up with a final solution to the immigrant problem and restore your nation's greatness and pride in it's national purity and lead the way boldly into a new future whereby your nation reasserts its supremacy over its many enemies!

I am not a xenophobe! I only agree with two!

1.* You believe you don't hate and fear foreigners, you just don't want them anywhere near you- If you restrict that to arabs. Sorry, but if I see one getting onto a plane, I get off.

2.* You refer to illegal immigrants as "illegals"- Well, what the hell am I supposed to call them? Greencard-challenged?

Uh, you could call them "illegal immigrants." Or is that too much work for your hard-working fingers to type out?

And people like you wonder why we have immigrants doing manual labor. You're too lazy to even speak without sounding like an asshole...

Excellent points all. Although you know that since you posted that you must be either A.) Part of the conspiracy or B.) one of the illegals trying to breed god-fearing patriots out of their rightful plot of land that they have complete dominion over and no one else can touch it. ever. no-backsies.

I only match two of those, but I still think the list is bullshit. What's wrong with saying illegal instead of illegal alien?

And there is a conspiracy to supress the thread posed by illegal immigration, but it's not necessarily politically correct. It's the classist assumption that there are jobs that Americans just won't do. Maybe your rich white ass can't be bothered to mow lawns for a living, but there are plenty of rednecks and ghetto dwellers who would love to have such a job if it payed enough.

Saying "illegals" doesn't automatically make you a xenophobe. That's why you have to match two others on the list.

Please. Your rich white ass can't be bothered to say "illegal immigrants." Apparently you're incapable of it, too much work. Or is there another reason you constantly have to abbreviate the phrase and just coincidentally make it a little more dehumanizing?

I agree with those two. Then again, when you live in Southern California for many, many years and slowly see 90% of the signs go from English to Spanish you are bound to share those views.

Which is funny, seeing how I'm technically an immigrant.

An assumption that the media almost never bother to challenge kind of looks like a conspiracy.

BTW, I'm not rich. I make only about $28,000 per year. In NJ that's about what a living wage would be. The fact that the government restricts legal immigration and turns a blind eye toward illegal immigration at the request of the wealthy is a symptom of the class war in this country. They get cheap labor and they get to turn the working poor against each other to distract them. For rich folks it's win/win.

It's not dehumanizing. It's a description of their immigration status.

Please get the hell off your high horse here.

Self-righteous and pretentious bigotry in defense of a specific group of people is not in the least any better then the casual reference to said groups legal status.

But anyway, that’s pretty much the only thing on your list that I disagree with, and I don’t even use the term “illegal.”

The fact that the government restricts legal immigration and turns a blind eye toward illegal immigration at the request of the wealthy is a symptom of the class war in this country.

It's a symptom of the conflicts of democracy. Government can't make up it's mind about anything. First they're for the war on Iraq - unanimously, mostly - and then they oppose it. How versatile of them! Just goes to show that they can't agree on the color of shit. Same with immigration policy, and everything else - everything we do is half-assed.

I appreciate that you see they restrict legal immigration, though. That's a huge chunk of the whole issue.

But a class war? Too much Marx for me. I don't buy it.

They get cheap labor and they get to turn the working poor against each other to distract them. For rich folks it's win/win.

Yeah, cuz all rich people employ illegal immigrants, is that it? If there's a class war you're clearly all for it, but I think you're generalizing.

It's not dehumanizing. It's a description of their immigration status.

Well, we could disagree on this one for hours, since its a matter of interpretation. Sure, it's a description of their immigration status, but its not a description of THEM. A person is not a status. If I wanted to call illegal immigrants a bunch of wetbacks, but I was too dishonest with myself and too PC to go that far, I would definitely say "illegals" instead of "illegal immigrants." And I don't think it's just me.

The "rich white ass" comment was aimed at those who constantly propagate the myth that there are jobs Americans don't want to do. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I don't know anything about your finances.

I have a problem with that myth as well. Perhaps my own "rich white ass" is too good for those kind of jobs now, but when I was starting out, my "poor white ass" did whatever crappy jobs I could get. In my day that was how you got to become a "rich white ass". Considering how many poor Americans I see, I can't believe that they wouldn't do the low-end jobs that the illegal immigrants are taking.

I think that's funny.

There's another reason why people don't have a problem with Mexicans:

They work harder, for longer than Americans.

Most Americans show up for work at a shitty job once or twice and then never show up ever again. And while they are there, they don't work very hard. The illegals show up, week after week, and work hard.

A lot of immigrants (legal and illegal) are in more desperate situation at home - for instance, a crazed, corrupted government is holding them down in poverty with their tyrannical ways. The people who come to this country looking for a better life have a lot more motivation to stand horrible conditions, because they're worried about the lives of their children and other relatives. I'm not saying some Americans aren't in the same situation, but I think generally immigrants are willing to work harder for less because the money means so much more to them.

I don't know how it is now, but when I was doing those shitty jobs, I worked as hard as anyone. I'll admit that as soon as I could get a better job I was gone. With the illegals, the businesses practically have slave labor and unlike me, they CAN'T get a better job, which is why they like them.

I don't understand this whole debate. I don't mind immigrants in the least. I have a number of immigrant friends, and am aware that I'm what, on some sides of the family a fourth generation immigrant myself. I have a friend who immigrated from France when she married an american. I have another friend who immigrated from Finland God only knows why. Does it matter? They're perfectly welcome to come join my country. I've known Arab and Mexican immigrants too. All welcome.

BUT illegal immigrants are another story. It's no xenophobic... it's the illegal part that I don't like, not the immigrant part. That's why everyone calls them "illegals" - because it's the illegal part of "illegal immigrant" that is a problem. I don't see why that is hard to understand, or why there is such outcry when ILLEGAL (if understandable) activities are punished. What's the matter with you people?

The occupants of any given rung of the ladder are the ones kicking the hands of those beneath them the hardest.

It was true when it came to the right to vote in Europe, it's true with immigration and it's true in the education system in the UK (the upper middle classes upset with the opportunies presented to the less well off). It's a fact of life

I can never be a xenophob as that would require me to have patriotism or nationalism. I have neither as they both are a sickness that effects the minds and leaves people dead. Why do people fight immigration? Are they afraid by allowing one to cross an imaginary, made up line that something bad will happen?
