Who Else Is Open-Borders?

Who else is in favor of the principle of a global open border? Basically, allow people to live and work wherever they want as long as they don't have any diseases. Same thing with imports/exports. Tariffs should be proportionate to the amount of money the government spends on port security. I think America should start negotiating open borders with as many countries as possible, starting with our neighbors and following with other first-world civilized countries.

I am.
I imagine it will have to be introduced gradually but I think it is definately something we should be moving towards.

Ah.....um.....what?
I think that open borders is probably a good, nay, a great idea, but likely something I'll never see in my lifetime. Which means I'll be skipping borders (and an ocean) sometime.

You know what else is funny? When people dismiss millennium old concepts with intellectually dishonest quips. Now that’s comedy.

In theory, I'm a strong internationalist. But as long as there is no worldwide working code, worldwide minimal wages, worldwide customer protection, worldwide healthcare, worldwide environement protection, ... opening the borders completly will lead to a downward spiral on all of this.
So on the short term I'm for opened borders with tarrif to protect local economies and local social laws.

That's why 30 years of lowering traffics and 10 years of WTO leaded to poorer workers all around the world.

Yes, but I'm scared of them ever since I created three threads about "Dr. Doom vs. George W Bush for President of the US" while trying to create one poll... I don't want to be accused of spamming.
Besides this thread was intended to encourage discussion, not gauge the numbers of adherents on the boards.

I thought that's why we had oceans...
So we could send our convicts to some far away continent and never hear from them again, until the advent of the internet. ;)
BTW, I understand you not wanting to hang out with Saudi Arabia and Iran (whatever that means), but Saudi Arabians and Iranians often have the stereotype of being quite friendly and fun to party with.

Saudi Arabians and Persians are actually mostly extremely polite and a good laugh. You should probably meet some before you start ranting.

You misread me. I find the concept of borders and national identity hilarious, because it's completely artificial. I think that this artificial contruct has caused a great deal of bloodshed which may have been avoided if people didn't subscribe to nationalistic propaganda.
Also, just because an idea is old doesn't make it good. Slavery is an old idea, going back millenia. Is it good?

You'd love open borders then. There wouldn't be any Saudi Arabia or Iran with open borders, only my-one-and-only-huge-great-empire!!!
But yeah, open borders are cool, but with all the administration we've already put in place, opening them gradually would be better.
A good proof that it works: EU (curse you UK! curse you!)
Another good proof: The US (if you consider them seperate states) and maybe Canada (but I think the US is a better 'other' example)

That's not a good example. It's a rotating dictatorship which forces different nations to adhere to some liberal wet dream of unity.

I am strongly against universal open borders. My reason for this is purely selfish, which makes it no less valid.
My purely selfish reasons are that I live in a wealthy nation with a guaranteed standard of living, which at times I have been very grateful for. This very fact would attract hordes of people anxious to improve their lot in life, and while I can hardly object to that, I also know that the larger the population the less possible that standard of living becomes. Were unlimited immigration to be permitted, all nations would shortly be equal in population treatment - at a level far below those enjoyed by modern westerners.
I don't want to live in a city with the wealth level of Mumbai, or even Johannesburg. I like the unearned privileges I enjoy. I like spending as much on one meal as would feed a family in Somalia for a year.
And before you ask, I fell not one whit of guilt over any of it. More importantly, neither does a single one of you.
If any of you really wanted to end third world poverty and let all these people into the developed world, you wouldn't be wasting thousands of daollars on internet capable computers, modems and line rentals.
Just a little reality injection for a fantasy thread.

Sorry, I support a dictatorship which gives me more freedoms than a democracy then.
Considering I don't have to suffer border controls whenever I want to return to my home country, I think it's quite wonderful.

Hence, gradual elimination. Nations wanting to enter the EU first have to develop their economies until it isn't a problem, once it isn't, they integrate them better, until it becomes natural.
It would be very stupid to just eliminate all borders at once, but it is also stupid not to get rid of them eventually, even if it takes another two hundred years. Honestly, it takes a tree two hundred years to grow into something real and beautiful, so why can't we be a bit patient?
I will be for open borders with Mexico when Mexico raises it's minimum wage to our standards, and gets worker's rights and enivironmental laws comparable to ours.

Open the borders!
I love that idea. In fact i have always supported the idea of an American Union, like the EU, no borders between member states. Ah such a lovely idea, today the xenophobic, nationalists will never let that happen.:(
