To the left of me: Ethanol! To the right of me: Coal to Oil!

In the next few years, this will be what is surrounding me. Down the road, they (the rich coal and gas businessman) want to put in a coal to oils plant. And in a town near by, another bunch of people want to put and ethanol plant in.
This is good because it will bring more jobs here, but I don't want my home town to become a waste land.. Enviromenatly, what am I in for down the road?

How near is the coal plant?
Near: Move. Now. Soot, smoke, and needing to repaint every 2 years awaits.
Far: I still say move if you have asthma/other lung problems.

Ethanol production is fairly environmentally friendly as is, and stricter laws on diesel fuel and coal liquefaction are going to reduce the environmental impact of that process on the local area. Clean coal and low-sulfur diesel are pretty much emission free other than a reduced output of CO2. Plus, clean diesel and coal produce no black smoke or soot.
If your community had to choose between them, I'd say go with the ethanol plant because it has a much more local effect on the economy since the feedstock used is almost always locally produced. Plus, coal is a common fuel for ethanol production, so that's a pretty efficient location for the two plants.
The best would be alternative-energy powered plants with product shipped by biodiesel and harvested by ethanol-fueled equipment, but that's a lot of work...
