I think more people, and men in particular, should seriously consider acquiring and wearing proper hats. http://www.villagehatshop.com/media/akubra-snowy-river.jpgHats are quite attractive on many peoples' heads.
But unfortunately, there is a tendency among men to wear, instead of proper hats, ball caps. And this troubles me to no end. Ball caps are, without a doubt, one of the single-least attractive form of head-covering an adult male could ever consider. I'll concede their usefulness on a baseball diamond; and I'm willing to make allowances for children. But people - people. Do you really want to go through life looking like this?

I disagree; the Akubra is suitable for outdoors and casual wear. I prefer wide-brimmed hats, so I'll make no apologies for my selection. Besides, I had things to do last night, other than to track down a multitude of hat photos. Just to set your mind at rest, I also own a top hat, a bowler, an even wider-brimmed oilskin hat, two black cowboy hats, one denim - one felt, three variously styled straw hats, a green leather hat I picked up in Mexico, and a winter skunkskin hat (with tail).

But no, there really isn't anything worse than a reversed ballcap. Not even my Akubra. Really.

Actually, depending on the direction one is facing- For example if one is going to be sitting down outside and working on something in front of himself- Wearing a ballcap backwards is a good way to keep the sun off one's neck.

Anyway, I definitely fall on the fedora (http://www.blue-eyes.com/store/catalog/images/greyhat.jpg) side of this debate. I do own a ballcap, a gift from my father, but I almost never wear it. If I am going to cover my head, I prefer to do it in style. It is all moot, though, my hair is just too lovely to cover up.

Just as another note, I think that pith helmets are going to come back into style soon. When you start seeing everyone wearing them, remember that I said it first! ;-)

I use a baseball cap for what its supposed to be used for: Keeping the sun out of my eyes.
My baseball cap is also a better place than my face to apply bug spray. Cheaper to replace than my face or a real hat as well.

Now, my attire usually does not usually blend well with a hat, as its rather casual and laid back for the most part.
However, when I have suit on and an inverted noose tied around my neck I like to show that I have hair, while I still have it.

The facial hair I can cope with; that he's drunk might not be as apparent were he to not actually be holding the can of beer. I've seen many a poorly-kempt twentysomething male sporting a weeks' growth of beard, but to really hone that undeniably dissipated look, throw in a Schlitz Beer baseball cap.

Think about it: it's not as though before he got drunk, he was looking good or anything - a rumpled, striped opened-collar dress shirt worn over top of a blue t-shirt with crumbling white lettering emblazoned in a semi-circle, and worn jeans. Adding a tacky ballcap doesn't help. It's not like he was looking great and whoops-! A few too many beers and suddenly he's looking like Cooter from the old Dukes of Hazzard. Nah.

It comes as somewhat of a relief that so many NSers seem to agree on the inherent superiority of proper hats. As it happens, I am currently wearing my Akubra - consider it tipped, everybody.
