Vinegar with Cod?

We've already had the popcorn thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=466879) and the infamous Brie thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=472611) and now me and Huw are back with our latest disagreement.

Apparantly ( :p ) having vinegar with the fish in fish and chips is weird. To me, it's perfectly normal and I really am puzzled at how Huw has never known anyone to have vinegar with fish.

So, NSers, is having vinegar with fish (specifically cod) weird?

I put vinegar on fish finger sandwiches, and I presume some most go on the fish when I put it on my chips, so I'd have to say no, it's not weird.

If it's battered cod, I'd consider it weird not to have it with vinegar ;)

Depends. Unbattered, bloody hell yes. Battered fish of any kind, a perfectly natural state of affairs.

That's the kind of thing that'll ruin his stomach, that's for sure.

Anyway, if it's battered cod (although I eat haddock, as to slightly delay the extinction of cod) then yeah, vinegar should go on it, just as it should go on chips.

Yes.

Vinegar has a lot of delicious uses. Putting it on fish and/or chips is decidedly not one of them. *shudder*

(Although, to be fair, I guess I wouldn't consider it weird if I were a fellow Brit - how can it be weird if practically anyone is doing it? Or are you telling me that most people only put the vinegar on their chips?)

I'm not a massive fan of vinegar, and I'm a vegetarian, so me posting in this thread probably isn't justified at all.

<.<

Vinegar shouldn't go with fish. A little bit on chips is fine, but for the love of all that is and isn't holy, don't drown the poor fuckers.

Vinegar goes on fish and chips....thats why when you go and order it at the chippie they say 'salt and vinegar?' before they wrap it up......

BUT if you eat Cod Mornay....then thats a whole other thing...so it really is a cod in batter thing...

There is also this eco-sustainable-blabla foodstore that sells only cod caught on hooks, which means no trawls etc, which is like the cod-equivalent to those sustainably eco-trendly coffee shops....so there is a way to avoid that evil haddock, which is only fit as cod food.....All Hail the Cod!

I don't care how it's caught, it's still an endangered species. Although eating a panda is appealing in its own way.

Nah, PM's right. Vinegar does not go with cod. I found that most fish had too delicate a flavour to be eaten with something as strong as vinegar. It doesn't complement the flavour of fish (cod specifically...or haddock) at all.

Just because most people here seem to like vinegar with cod, doesn't mean they're necessarily right. Since when has this forum been about majority rule?

if I'm eating fish (aside from the tuna in a tuna salad sandwich), two conditions will apply:

a) The fish will be breaded and fried

b) The fish will be served with loads of tartar sauce

I suppose tartar sauce probably has vinegar in it, but as for eating fish with only vinegar... i don't know if i could stomach it.

The catchiness is what makes it endangered, in certain parts.

It's more the public's demand for it that means it's still getting caught.

It always has!!

And it's not about being "right" or "wrong"... it's about me winning!!

Haha, okay, what I really mean is that he said that no-one else did this and it was totally weird to do it. I'm saying it's normal. Whether it's the right thing to do or not is not the issue - it's whether it's a normal thing to do *nods*

Sorry, I tar all southerners with the same brush (although I shouldn't); my girlfriend is one of the weird ones who doesn't like brown sauce, black pudding, worcestershire sauce, fish and chips from a chippy (!)...
The joke being, of course, that Northamptonshire's hardly bordering Scotland ;)

He definitely is this time; my great-grandparents owned a fish and chip shop at some point around the middle of the last century, so I obviously know!

Fresh out of the water and thrown on the pan's good, too. Only in a different, much less refined way.

Nah, nothing on this forum is ever invalid. Personal opinions are never wrong, even if they're about meat and coming from a vegetarian.

I'm certain meat has never touched your tongue. Or, has it?

My vegetarian friend asked me, "Do you have anything against eating vegetarian?" once. I thought that was rather funny. Anyhow, we ate some kind of mushroom that looks like minced meat. Happen to know what that's called?

Malt vinegar is also good with boardwalk fries and Old Bay. That's how you're supposed to eat them in Maryland.

When I first saw this, I thought the title said "vinegar with god". :p Anyway, no, I've never put vinegar on my fish. I put vinegar on french fries, but I would think vinegar would overpower the flavour of most fish.
