Dagoth Ur, from Morrowind. Mostly because he wasn’t really evil but a product of unfortunate circumstances who was only trying to carry out what his master and closest friend requested of him.

Also Mephistopheles from Neverwinter Nights was just badass. Can’t get more evil than a demon who engineers a rebellion in hell against himself in order to take out his enemies, all the while preteneding to be under the control of a dark elf queen in order to gain access to the mortal world.

The villains from the Kotor series were also all kind of 1337. Something unique about each of them, Malek, Nihlus, Scion, Treia.

Malek didn’t blow up Taris, he merely leveled the city, and it was Tarkin who oversaw the destruction of Alderan. In fact, Darth Vader didn’t even offer an opinion on the matter.

Oh sure, take the two best right off the bat.

Oh, come on, they didn't get all the popular villains. After all, they forgot Sephiroth... Oops, I really should have left him for somebody else.

That said, now that my most obvious choice (Kerrigan) is taken, here's two more for the list:
Individual: Darth Vader (*insert any number of Star Wars games here*)
Species: Shevar (Ascendancy), though classifying them as true villains is questionable

I don't see any good choices here, sorry.

(While Darth Vader may have been a good villian in the original trilogy, few of the games he's been in have been very good. Except for TIE Fighter. But he only got a cameo in that one.)

She's the Queen bitch of the universe. And not all of your little soldiers or space ships will stand in her way.

I mean, I've never abused my computer after meeting her. She'll kill you just if she thinks she's having a bad day and taunt you while she does it.

Sarah Kerrigan from Starcraft/Broodwar

Really? As much as I like the character, I always liked Arcturus Mengsk better. He seemed more rational and calculating, even though he had an underlying need to dominate the terran political structure. Kerrigan often seemed like she was two steps away from a temper-tantrum worthy of a five year old.

Also, don't forget, had Mengsk not abandoned Kerrigan, then Kerrigan would probably never have even become a villain. :)

Mengsk just doesn't seem to fit the villian character as well as Kerrigan does. He seems more of a neutral one who did evil deeds in my view. Much better than Kerrigan who is driven by revenge and betraying every single ally she can get.

It was just brilliant how she forced the Protoss in helping her kill the new overmind. Simply brilliant.

Also, don't forget, had Mengsk not abandoned Kerrigan, then Kerrigan would probably never have even become a villain. :)

Which is the fault of the programmers. Not the people who invented the stories for the games nor the artwork for their appearances.

Kindof, particularly in the case of Nihilus in KOTOR 2, who was simply disappointing, although he was truly set up well. But I have issues with certain parts of the character development in the other characters too. And Malak never really seemed all that awesome when compared to Darth Revan. ;)

Definitely one of the more memorable evil ones, but he was on your side, whether you played light or dark. I thought that would invalidate him as a "villain".

Well, Kreia was certainly very well-written. And one of the most thought-provoking characters in any game I've ever played. Not to mention the most thought-provoking character in all of the Star Wars Universe. Hell, because of Kreia, KOTORII is probably as thought-provoking (if not more so) than the classic Deus Ex or DXIW.

I never saw what was so great about Ganondorf. Anybody who comes up with the same basic plan, then proceeds to get his ass kicked, and comes back a year later to do the same thing, isn't a very good villain in my book.

The Dragon King at the end of Dragon Warrior just cause he asked you to join the darkside and if you said "Yes" he said "Really!?"

The Sun Li from Jade Empire, epic badass. From his defiling of a primal nature spirit, to his masterful impossibly intricate plan, to his ruthless ambition as evidenced by his answer to the revealation of his long lost, presumed dead, daughter, he the very picture of uncomprimising cunning.

And, a classic, the Cyberdemon from DooM.

Nihilus was kinda scary. But. Er. Other then that, there wasn't much to him. Just a Ringwraith in Star Wars.

Sion was so very lame. Le sigh. 'i m teh ebol invincibel mann!!!111!1 watsch i ctu of kreyas hand!!111!!!1 look!111!!11 i in republicque schipp!!11!11 look at al teh bodies!111!!!!!1 i r teh ebol!11!!!!! yargh!1!!!!!!!!!1'

The the Sith/Dark Jedi who you think are Jedi were cool. Kreia and Atris. Visas Mar was pretty cool, too. But still. My vote stays firmly with Darth Traya. She may have had a lot of thoughts to give, but at the end of the day she was the one who essentially engineered all of the events that led you right up to your final confrontation with her. Not so evil. But very thoughtful.

And I'll take a thought provoking, morally ambiguous villian over a blindly evil one anyday.

All mentioned by other people, but:

1) SHODAN (System Shock 1/2)

2) Kane (Command & Conquer, Tiberian Sun)

3) The Pope (Medieval: Total War)

HK-47 was fun, too, although not a villian really. Just a sociopathic robot.

Murray, the talking demonic skull.

Murray: I'm a powerful demonic force! I'm the harbinger of your doom! And the forces of darkness will applaud me as I STRIDE through the gates of hell carrying your head on a pike!
Guybrush Threepwood: Stride?
Murray: All right then, roll! ROLL through the gates of hell. Must you take the fun out of everything?

Guybrush Threepwood: Do you know anything about lifting curses?
Murray: Oh, right. I know a lot about lifting curses. That's why I'm a disembodied talking skull sitting on top of a spike in the middle of a swamp.
Guybrush Threepwood: You seem bitter.

i'd have to go with....

Eda [sp] from ff8 as most creapy
Darth Reven for most... randomly cool, i would say why but it's something of a spoiler, and i can't work out how to colour it so it's black text on black background yet.

the tetris block rates highly.

HK-47 is cool, but not really a villan

i play a lot of stratagy games, so who is the "villan" is relitive... in romance of the three kingdoms, in any scenario where Dong Zhuo is already dead...

CAO CAO IS EVIL!!!!

Sima Ye in the latist dynasty warriors when you're not playing on Wei's side would have to be most annoying... even when admiting you're good, he's like "but of course, i could do it better" i mean, seriously, you beat him, he says something to the effect of "such a task is beneath one of my skill, but for now we shall pull back" ... and it gets worse *laughs*

Sepheroth is... well, he's ok, but i really don't see the point in all the hype he gets.

i'd have to say for over all best villan though, Yu Yevon. he's a weak and worthless ball of dark light by the time you fight him, but he's been terroriseing an entire planet for over 1000 years in the guise of "Sin" befor then.... and is responcibel for the social/political structure of an entire world..

hey, he may suck, but he's GOOD at it :D

bigs and wedge [ff8 specificly, but any where they're bad guys really] rate as funnyest. though when they leave it's kind of a let down... you just see them in passing, don't even have to talk to them, and they're just talking about quiting the army...

I agree, almost entirely. I quite enjoyed all of the campaign, but I certainly agree it had no defining moments. potentially epic shootouts, like the tank-cruise across the bridge early on, were ruined by not peaking. And I never liked halo multiplayer. weapons balance doesn't exist in that game.

I'm just voicing my honest opinion. The campaign was utter rubbish, with no really defining moments simply because it was always trying to create defining moments. And it didn't even have an ending. Euch...

And the multiplayer was also a bit poor, let's face it.

I totally agree with you. *gives a cookie*

Oh yes, Irenicus is unbelievable! I love some of his quotes:

"Silence dog, you have no purpose but to die by my hand!"

And his voice actor was excellent.

He was pretty good. But then when you understand his character, he turns out to be nothing more than a spoilt brat that didn't get his way, so he has to kick, scream, kill people and generally be a bitch until he does. And then you kill him.

Tonberry, hands down.

Master Tonberry's infinitely more evil. I fucking hate "Everyone's Grudge"!

Anyway, the best pure villain? Cefca from Final Fantasy VI. He's totally fucked up, since he wants to destroy absolutely everything rather than rule over existence. And he tortures a town full of kids for the fun of it, which is totally wrong on so many levels.

And Sephiroth... Well, he's not a villain so much as a hero-gone-psychotic. He lost his mind thanks to some totally wrong information he read in a basement, torched a rural town, killed almost all of its inhabitants, almost killed Tifa and Zack, stabbed Cloud multiple times, and "killed" himself by jumping into the lifestream to gain knowledge on just about everything. And then he goes and kills Aerith, which totally sucked. Acting out in such ways thanks to some misinterpretations makes you a loon, not a real villain.

I think we can all agree that the true villain of Final Fantasy VII was Hojo.

Yeah, but then you have to kill him again :)

And he steals your soul.

I'll agree he had some childish traits in his personality ("I was kicked out of my home and now I want to destroy everything in the town. Oh, and I think I'll become immortal on the side too by stealing the soul of the God of Murder's child).

But he fits the psycho profile perfectly. He's incredibly intelligent and each conversation with him left me in awe at the character.

And his quotes are awesome.

Yeah, but it's on familiar territory. :p

I really cheated in that game. I played my character through from the first game. He was a wizard, and in BG1, there are certain books lying around that give you stat increases. A wizard with 19 dexterity, constitution, and intelligence...meaning I could use level 9 spells. :p

Well, okay, I had won the game previously with another character, so that gives me the right to be a hack.

I lost all respect for him in Snake Eater when he does that cat call. Not because of the cat call itself, but because of the girly little motion he makes. And Big Boss is a pretty good villian. He does kick a tremendous amount of ass.

I guess the villian really is outdone in the exposition. :p

I used -

Time stop
Greater malison x2 (I think? Might have been some other saving throw lowerer.)
Finger of death

Instakill. :p

Come to think of it, I may have softened him up first...I can't remember if Finger of Death has a hit point limit.

Absolutely. Then... SHODAN. Then for humour value, I'm gonna say Dr Breen, simply because of the line "We simply don't have room on this enterprise for a rogue physicist!"

I'm sure more'll come to me.

"Welcome to City 17. It's safer here."

I vote for Kane. Or maybe CABAL.

He can't actually die, I think, so that'd make him the greatest. He helped Stalin invade Europe and then started his own international terrorist brotherhood capable of fighting the entire planet or something.

Damn, he was awesome.

Oh, or Timemaster from Freedom Force. He was cool too, especially his voice.

But in the end, I have to vote for...

Darth Traya. Thought provoking, non-cliche, and just plain awesome.

Yeah, but then you have to kill him again :)

If we're going on number of times you have to kill the bastard, I think Seymour wins the battle (FFX). Those who've played it know how annoying he became after something like the fourth time you had to whoop him.

Though in overall personality and presentation... hm... I can't really think of any... all the villains in the games I've played were beaten, so they didn't impress me.

Treiya? Beaten, 3 to 1. Malak? Beaten, while ALLOWING him to bring himself to life from the other Jedi around him - pussy. Dr. Wily has Dr. Wily's Syndrome, meaning he builds weaknesses into his creations compulsively and makes it easy to defeat him. Jack of Blades was disappointing, as was the rest of Fable: TLC. Seth from Kings Field II was impressive and put up a good fight and made me proud to have beaten the hardass game - downside being that the character Seth was underdeveloped and you knew almost nothing about him. The end boss of FF2 was weird and seemed to have come out of nowhere, despite it being very gratifying to have killed him and beaten the game.

So in conclusion, my pick would be Mike Tyson, from Mike Tyson's Punchout. I never beat that bastard.

How many games was Gannondorf the villain in? I can't respect a villain that's tried and failed more than two times.

At least he matured as he grew up, and isn't a stereotypical bishie now, but a coneiving, backstabbing (not to mention deadly), SOB. And personally I think Big Boss belongs in the realm of anti-hero, based on what was revealed in Snake Eater.

The Grunts from Halo, obviously. They are hilarious!

Now, if this poll was about the most annoying video game villains, I would have to say the Flood, again, from Halo. I hate those goddamned, tentacled things.

Seriously why do people think that queen is so badass?

She pretty much obliterated everyone in her way, that must be why.

Nuhuh. The True villain was Jenova. It drove Sephiroth, Cloud and Hojo to mere puppethood as part of its campaign to become God, it killed President Shinra, almost killed Tseng and speared Aerith, not to mention hundreds of Hojo's little experiments and quite a few Shinra guards in both the building and the boat from Junon, took the black materia and enabled meteor to be summoned. You fight it three times during the game and three times at the climax. And even then it's not dead.
