How do you like your steak?

Qwystyria

I find it barbaric when people go to a steak house and order their steak well done. Even more so than when they order it rare, with the moo's echoing in the kitchen. So how do YOU like your steak done?

As a true hunter, I eat everything I shoot. Conversly, I also shoot everything I eat. So I like my steak nailed to an archery target so I can shoot it with my crossbow. Unless of course I wish to hunt it in its natural environment. But it's funny how so many supermarkets won't let me in anymore.

I know I'm taking my own thread off topic, but I have a couple friends who got thrown out of a supermarket once when they were food shopping with me. Apprently, the floor manager got very upset that they were taking photographs of thier cardboard sign with store signs inside her store. I bet you couldn't get thrown out faster for having a crossbow in the store.

Yeah, my husband said that until I got him to TRY the (quite cooked) pink meat. He's never ordered anything more than medium-rare since. Now he says as long as the juice coming out doesn't look like blood and has been cooked, he's fine.

Only whimps hunt steaks with cameras. And the resulting meal isn't very filling. But yes, people around here do seem a bit touchy about the whole crossbow bit so I've decided to put a smilely face on it and make it a happybow.

Medium-Well, most definitely. I can't stand Well anymore (though I used to) and anything less cooked and I suffer meat-based anxieties (and even at Medium-Well, those anxieties keep me away from beef most of the time).
Also, to be a needlessly pedantric dick, a vampire wouldn't be interested in steak, as one would derive nutrition exclusively from blood. Werewolf would be closer to the mark going exclusively on prevailing literary clichés.

I thought about putting in an option for that, but I decided the vegetarian option covered it fairly well... apparently I should have put in an "I'm an anti-establishment misanthrope who needs my very own poll option that only I will vote for." (I bet it'd get a lot of votes, too.)

I think my grill goes up to 700 or 800 degress- I bring it up to temp, swab the grill with garlic olive oil, put lightly salted meat on for a minute -then roate the meat 180 degrees. Another minute, then flip it over, let it cook for two more.
Its seared on the outside, red and juicy on the inside.

A good marinate to make the outside salty and tangy- Worstechire sauce mixed with teriaki or soy sauce that some fresh cut up garlic has been sitting in. Simple and family/guests are amazed like I have some chef's secret.

I knew a guy who would put his steak on the heat just long enough to get it to room temperature *shudder*. In any event, I now will eat anything from medium to well. I usually order it medium well because I haven't found a single place yet that could actually cook it the way I ordered it, regardless of the price range of the restaurant. I've always been able to cook steak on the grill to perfection, so I don't understand why restaurant chefs can't do it. In any event, when I order medium well now, it USUALLY comes out anywhere between medium and burnt. Although I have still occasionally received it medium rare, instead of medium well. I've been gradually working my way more and more red. I had a really good steak the other day at Applewoods in Oklahoma City. It was came out medium, instead of the medium well I ordered, but it tasted incredible. I'd have to say that was probably the best steak I've had out in a LOOOONG time. I actually like char-rare better, but you have to have a special grill or an extraordinary chef to do it right.

One of my old girlfriends once bought me a a Matsuzaka (Kobe beef - that's the semi-mythical Japanese cattle that get beer massages and whatnot) filet mignon done perfectly char rare for my birthday. It cost over $US150. (She got her moneys worth later.... :D)

Blue Rare:
A blue rare steak is quickly charred on the outside and barely cooked on the inside. For best results, bring the steak to room temperature before cooking. (130°F)

I for one can't stand the flavor of quickly cooked medium-rare steaks. I don't find the flavor of cow's blood very appealing.

I find it barbaric when people go to a steak house and order their steak well done.
Absolutely, those barbarinans are truly disgusting http://assets.jolt.co.uk/forums/images/icons/icon13.gif

I prefer my steak *rare*! I want it to actually taste like meat and not like boot leather!
Also, I'm no beef eater, my steak should've oinked before and not mooed!

I knew a guy who would put his steak on the heat just long enough to get it to room temperature *shudder*.
Sounds like me!

I don't eat beef anymore for health reasons, but I still crave it now and again. I just wish I could find some beef-flavored tofu. Of course, if its anything like Tofurkey (turkey flavored tofu, it even came shaped like a turkey and had little like legs and everything, creepy really), it'll be absolutely disgusting. Plus, it wouldn' have as cool a name. Tofow? Tolstein? Toe-eef?

When I want blood, I'll drink the stuff that comes out of my nose about once or twice a year (depending on how dry it gets), thank you very much.

No, the full taste of the meat, of the steak, at medium it allready starts to lose quite a lot of taste (In my opinion no doubt, I am not speaking for anyone but me, ofcourse).

I find it barbaric when people go to a steak house and order their steak well done. Even more so than when they order it rare, with the moo's echoing in the kitchen. So how do YOU like your steak done?

Not at all. Beef is disgusting.

If it's a really good steak well done is the only way. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find a good steak anymore. A few years ago the Ag Dept. changed the definition of Prime and Choice. Because of that farmers no longer "finish" the animal. Because they don't put that final fat finish on, the meat is pretty tasteless. A good steak needs at least an inch of fat all the way around the outside. That gives it "marbeling". If it doesn't have that it's the waste of a good animal.

Most steak today is marinated to get it tender and juicy. If the animal is finished that isn't necessary.

The only reason people eat rare is because they have never had a good steak.

Is it too late to add an option that says "I hate steak/beef, regardless of how well cooked"?
I would expect you to click the veggie button in such a case.

I’m a vegetarian, but if I was to eat a steak, it would have to be well done. Anything less seems unsanitary.

Man, I sound like a fucking fairy.
Quoted and emphasized.

actually it becomes more carcinogenic the more you cook it...

Also, I may have pulled that fact out of my ass.

...and I might be high.
I believe that all three of those statements are indeed true, assuming you are cooking your steak on a fiery grill. Although, if you cook a steak on something other than a fiery grill, you should probably eat something cheaper because that ruins the flavour. I am aware of how much of an arrogant steak elitist I sound, so no need to point it out.

Raw or rare. Raw if it's fresh off the carcass, rare if it is not. I only eat either game meat or "biobeef" and the like. I find anything else "tainted".
What is "biobeef"?

I don't eat beef anymore for health reasons, but I still crave it now and again. I just wish I could find some beef-flavored tofu. Points for "Tolstein". Now, tofu duck, that has an interesting name.

Heifu. A combination of heifer and tofu. Or Tottle - tofu + cattle. I imagine it'd be more likely to be either Befu (beef + tofu) or Cowfu
Cowfu sounds like a form of martial arts.

That sounds an awful lot like my grandmother's view on meat.

Back to the topic at hand, I like my steak rare to medium rare, but it requires careful babysitting to get just right. I lightly spread a sauce on my steaks, consisting of barbeque sauce, garlic, chili powder, and whatever is in "steak spice". I know it may sound like I'm ruining the meat, but it helps cover of the flavour of overcooked meat, which can happen if one does not watch the barbeque closely and flip at precise intervals.
