Summer Vacation?

Anyone have plans? If you live in the US, will rising gas prices keep you at home or cause you to modify your plans?

A couple of months ago, the plan was to take the month of July and drive across the country (again) stopping and visiting friends and relatives along the way. We figured we'd hit Georgia (my sister), Alabama, Mississippi (ex-wife, drop my daughter off), Louisiana (see what Katrina left behind), Texas (my parents), Arkansas (grad school friends), Kansas, Colorado (gf's brother), Utah (more grad school friends), Nevada, California (old friends from the Bay), and then back again via some places we've never seen before. But with gas at $3.00 a gallon already, it's looking like we may have to settle for a short cruise to the Bahamas or Belize instead. (I know, sucks to me be. :D )

So what are your plans?

I’m staying home. Traveling is such a chore and so expensive.

Rumor has it that gas could hit $4.00 a gallon, or even more, in a lot of places. It's already $3.10 here and not even memorial day.

I imagine I'll go to the UK, like I do every summer. My mother moved back there a while ago, and she guilts the hell out of me if I don't visit twice a year.

I'll probably go to italy in the fall however, and I've planned a week in charleston SC for june. (Though the latter is not cast in stone).

I don't really know; I do know, however, that I'll probably fly wherever I'm going. It's a lot cheaper than driving and a lot faster.

Nazz, if you end up taking that cruise to Belize, go on the Cave Tubing shore excursion. Normally I don't like those overpriced wastes, but cave tubing is an incredible experience.

Yeah, but you don't really get to see the country. Don't get me wrong--when I went to Austin last month, I flew and wouldn't have gone any other way--but for vacation, I really love to see the country, and driving is the way to do it.

We've looked into Amtrak, but it's a mess to get anywhere--very few direct routes.

I'm going on a cruise for the second week in August. Apart from that, I'll probably go up to Tahoe for a few weekends, and maybe a weekend in Monterey.

I don't get the 'summer vacation' thing, except that tv shows go into hiatus and movies are filmed, so I get a vacation from littering the world with reality shows (another one tommorrow...at least I'll be in Mendicino for April 20th...) and actually get to make movies. Hopefully. If it's a small enough production they'll rent my van and then I won't have to worry about gas prices. Or I'll make enough money to buy a diesel for it and convert it to veggie oil. Haha!

Maybe I can gold plate my socks...

Did you like it? New England is nice.

Maine has some of the most amazing stuff in the country. I've climbed Katahdin, rafted the North Branch of the Penobscot, and camped in the allagesh. Bar Harbour is a fun town and there is great snowmobiling in maine as well. Ostensibly, it should be a vacation paradise (if you can live with the fucking creatacous era blood sucking mosquitos).

That said, the people leave a little something to be desired. I've been pissy with them for a while over non resident big game licenses. And I got some massive fucking bogus fine for lighting a camp fire, which would have been fine except for the fact I was singled out because I was a New Yorker.

They need to open a restaurant with actual food as well.

Summer vacation for me? Ha!

I'm staying up at school. The economy's so bad up here, MSU was the only place I could find a job!

Not all bad, though. I get to make money, get ahead on my degree, stare at topless coeds from my window, the usual college things.

Nah. Bar Harbor is fine bug wise. Actually it's very nice, and there is a lot of stuff to do: Acadia is amazing, and has some fantastic hikes. You can also hop the Cat and take a trip to Nova Scotia from there too. Shop around before buying lobster rolls though, the prices and quality vary a lot. Oh, and try the blueberry beer. Good stuff.

In the North Woods, on the other hand, pretty much from end of may to september you'll face a barrage of various blood sucking insects. It is a fantasically beautiful part of the world, but if you drive up there (it's about 3 hrs), take plenty of mozzie rep and be prepared to be bitten anyway. (Eventually, you get used to it, but it takes about a month).

Wha? I'm going to the wrong college, it appears. All I can see from my window are crack-heads, coke-heads, and other <Insert name of narcotic substance here>-heads.
For my "vacation", I'll just do some shitty summer job whilst counting the hours 'till Fall Semester. Regretfully, it doesn't look like I'm going to snap and enter my rampage of blood and destruction for another 6 months, at least: I feel too calm, right now.

Maybe you should transfer from Hostos to Post. I've heard that's all good.

Well, you could try Fordham if that's too difficult for you.

Staying home, spending the summer in my own backyard (if I can afford it), looking for a part-time job close to home. I can barely afford the gas to drive the seven miles to my current job. 3.5% pay raise, doesn't even cover the increase in the cost of gas.

Y'know, if you think about what I say, it isn't nearly as amusing; worse yet, if you think about what I was thinking about when I spoke, then what you think I thought will cause . . . um, thing.
In other words, I know what Hostos is, I just didn't think that you knew the Hostos I know, but it seems that the two places are the same place, so they aren't two places, and so any confusion about which one you were refering to exists exclusively in my own mind.

Maybe I should calm down a bit before going on.

supposedly the family's plan involved going out to rocky mountain national park this summer, but apparently there is some concern about one of the vehichles pulling a trailer into the mountains (last year it didn't really approve of driving through the appalachians). so if that falls through, i'm pushing for a trek around one or more of the great lakes.

Possibly starting my new position with honeywell hopefully in the fall

It's confusing, because no-one chooses to go to school in NYC by choice (the hacking is non-existent, so how are you expected to stay in shape?). I therefore assumed that it is all generally run by the LIU system.

Now I see that it is more of a physics problem.

I stay in shape by chasing after homeless people and screaming obscenities at passing air molecules. Some people might say that this makes me some kind of mad man, I prefer to think of myself as purposefully misunderstood.
Now I see that it is more of a physics problem.
