Retirement!

I went to see the retirement councilor at work today. We went through my options and they seem pretty promising. I'M RETIRING - Woo-hoo! For those who've read my rants about my god-awful job - NO MORE! I feel like the weight of the universe has been lifted.

Realistically, I will have to get a part-time job at least until I can take Social Security Retirement, BUT THAT'S ONLY THREE YEARS. I can't believe how good I feel.

so they're forcing/buying you out? and you need to work during those three years?

raw deal? maybe. forget the buying out, if you cant live comfortbaly without a job after you retire, it is my opinion that something is amiss.

I could get more if I waited until I was 60, but I would have to kill someone if stayed there much longer. I would rather have less and have my health than have more (and not much at that) and be so stressed and miserable that I couldn't enjoy life.

My da's retiring this summer, after 30 years at an automotive plant. I've honestly never seen him happier than the day he finally got the call-in to start the gears rolling with the paperwork (apparently with all the buy-outs at the local plant, the phone systems here have been swamped and it took him several days of trying from the moment he got home until the call center closed). I think he's planning on going back to school AGAIN so he can be Doctor of Something Cool (actually, I just don't know what he wants to study), then retire to Arkansas with my mum and be a river guide the rest of his days.

Me, I'm still but a humble student, realizing I'll be working my hands to the bone until the day I die....

Hey, look at it this way - when you retire, you'll have more time to spend with Glitz. :)

My father retired in 2003 after working over 30 years with the State of Maryland. I found out later that he had a TIA whilst he was still working at his last placement, but he was able to retire at the age of 48 and live on a state pension (which isn't much, granted, but he also lives with his significant other). He's got health insurance for the rest of his life and a pension that will be there no matter what.

After years of hating his job to the point where it nearly cost him health problems, he's much better off mentally, physically (he quit smoking since his retirement), and emotionally now that he doesn't have to work at a job he hates.

I get about half my gross, but this doesn't include Social Security, my 403b and other pre-tax investments, nor does it include the equity in my house. Actually, in about three years, I'll be fairly comfortable, especially if I move out of California to a state that has a more reasonable cost of living.
