I guess it depends on what you're used to see.

I hate gory movies & do not watch them, but I had to watch this one in a university class.

Not surprisingly, I hated the gore. But of course I also hated the piece-of-shit movie (surprise ), so that certainly influenced my perception.

What's so bad about this is really that it pretends to be this oh-so-Christian thing with oh-so-moral values, yet it takes what can only be called a downright sadistic pleasure in wallowing, up close and detailed, in things like pieces of flesh being ripped out during the whipping scene, which is really the most terrible scene in the movie. And it only goes on for, oh, like a good ten minutes.

There's a couple other things, like the crown of thorns that is pressed into the skin, or the crucifixion that is rather graphic what with the nails being driven through the limbs.

But the one really, really sickening thing is that whipping scene.

It's just completely gratitious and graphic and disgusting.

But yeah, I know there are many people on here who might just laugh at that, because they're used to a whole other level of gore from all kinds of splatter movies, so like I said, it depends on what you're used to.

But seeing how The Passion is such an abominable movie in and of itself, I wouldn't recommend anybody to watch it. The violence is only on top of that, really.

Absoultely disgusting.

I had to leave the cinema at the whipping scene, and it took me about an hour to calm down again. I've never walked out of a film before.

But then I'm quite squeamish to start with, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. :p

I decided I had to watch that film when it came on dvd.
Im a dyed-in-the-wool Athiest, but I wanted to see it nonetheless.
I also very much like violence in films, and that sort of thing.

Its pretty gory, but not like all out blood and guts.

The worst part is when Jeebs is getting the holy snot (scuse the pun) whipped outta him.
The guard whips his ass for so long, he has to take a breather...

They pretty much nab him 20 minutes into the movie, and beat him like a government mule for the rest of the film.
There are brief moments in the film where they flash back to certain events, like Jesus having inventing the dinner table(apparently), and the Last Supper, and moments like that...

I jokingly called it "The two-hour beating of the Jeebus."

It didnt spiritually inspire me.
It didnt make a grand message about Christianity, or even how great Jesus' supposed sacrifice was.
It wasnt even a spectacular film.

What it lacked in plot, and an understandable dialogue (its spoken in Arameic, I believe) it tried to make up with brutality, and attemped to do so, in as graphic of a manner as American Theaters will allow.
However, this doesnt really make it an enjoyable movie.

I will say that the only character I felt any compassion for, was Mary, (Mom)
She is forced to watch her son be slowly executed, and tortured beforehand, and the emotional distress was well played by the actress playing her.

I did like the way it was spoken in the same language Jesus probably spoke, but as I said, it begins to wear thin after an hour, when you have to rely on subtitles to know what everyone is saying.

Is it brutal?

Yes, but not quite as brutal as the hype.

Was it a good movie?

Its not one you would watch a second time.
Its just not that good.

Well, I loved Elfen Lied. Passion of the Christ might actually be enjoyable, sort of, despite its religious content.

It's an anime film/series, packed with sex and violence, I believe.

He' starting to carry the cross now. The whipping wasn't that bad, but I flinched when they hit him in the eye >_>

Yes, basically, it's about the Diclonii (who are mostly young girls, it seems) who have telekinetic powers and tear and blow people up with them.

I haven't seen it but I'm wondering if this film should've deserved an NC-17 rating?

Less so than Clockwork Orange.
I thought it was more gory. The splatter on the screen from the nail going into his wrist was a bit much.

Less so than Clockwork Orange.
The only gore in Clockwork Orange is the hand cutting and when Alex is punched by the police at the start. And neither shows more blood than your average hosiptal drama.

It was sort of amusing that my mother the fundamentalist made me watch this film when she used to get all crazy about me watching action movies with a small fraction of the violence as The Passion of the Christ. I guess it's okay when that violence is done to Our Lord And Savior.

Nietzsche's claim about Christianity being sado-masochistic seems right on the mark after watching this.

I pretty much had that reaction too. After watching the whipping & seeing how much flesh they tore off his body, I think in reality he would have been dead before he got to the top of the hill.

Really?
Unless you filmed an entire city of people being hacked to death with slightly dull steak knives, you couldn't find a more gory movie.
