What Do You Call a Toilet?

The other day, working behind the bar I realized there were quite a few synonyms for the word 'toilet'. Some were quite common, some I'd never heard of but what do you call a toilet? Do you have strange names for them in countries other than the UK?

Because I'm underage I have to clean glasses all day and therefore cannot serve, or drink, drinks. It gets very annoying because I'm 6ft 3 and people think I'm 18 years old. It was also quite late and I was starting to nod off.

Crapper.

Never have a quasi-inventor AND the process the invention aided been so perfectly and serendipitously mated.

I'll occasionally use "privy" when I'm feeling saucy.

Also, I find myself referring to the action rather than the room:

Take a:

whiz
piss
shit
dump

Or, more colorfully:

bleed the lizard
drain the main vein

hang a rat
pinch a loaf

Or:

my back teeth are floatin'

I got a turtle head pokin' out...(right on, Fat Bastard!)

I guess I'm just a fan of the colorful metaphor.

I generally refer to the action as well - my favourite is 'Prince Krak is getting angry', which is a reference to a visit to Krakow last year.

The bathroom?I've never quite understood this development in the English language, given that one does not usually bathe when carrying out toiletry functions.

On the other hand, I often call it 'the bog', and I'm not digging for peat when I need to piss/shit :p

I've heard the toilet being refered to as "The Throne", but I don't use that. I usually refer to it as a toilet or shithouse, although when I'm in the mood to sound pompous and sophisticated (which I am far from being), I'll refer to it as the Toilette (pronounced twah-lette):p

Much like the guy with the latrine, I find myself referring to the 'head' from my days in the Marine Corps.

Head does have an interesting etymology, or is it entomology? They do draw flies, so maybe both work. Anyhow, it turns out that the facilities were usually located at the head of the ship. Sailing ships usually had the wind coming from the aft, so the unpleasantness was carried away from the ship.

many people here in the states refer to it as the room itself, 'bathroom' or 'restroom' (if in public). At least, here in the northwest. It might be a regional term, though. Guys tend to say things like "I have to take a piss" instead of referring to where they are going.

Of course "Shitter" can also be used as a synonym for the anal passageway, as in my brothers favourite bad one-liner:-

"I took my wife up the shitter the other night...what an awful name for a pub"

In many countries the bath and toilet are in the same room.Indeed, but then why can't the reverse work as well? "I'm going to the toilet room" when you're going for a bath. Besides, I see that public toilets in some countries are often referred to as "bathrooms", though I've never seen a bath in any of them. Also, I've heard people use phrases such as "the dog went to the bathroom on the living room carpet" - interesting that dogs can be in two places at once :p

I always thought it was funny when my dad asked me if "I needed to go potty". I always said "I need to go to the bathroom", or "I need to take a whiz". I guess it was kind of odd to hear a three-year-old say "whiz", but then I was never quite "normal". :p

It's funny how these names come about. Mostly I just call it the toilet, but the other name that seems to get used around here is 'The Wintering Room'.

It dates back to a Fantasy RP, where our group was trying to decide where to stay for the winter. In the middle of the discussion, one of our players stood up with the declaration, "Well, I'm going to winter in the toilet!" and promptly disappeared for half an hour.

It just sort of stuck after that.

The intention was to post in my local dialects, its not an aid to help me explain 'snyrting' and why I say it. Its a sign on a bathroom door in Uppsala. I thought it was a cool word for 'toilet' and started saying it. Turns out, I haven't really been saying the word. Looks like I threw in a letter. Anyhow:

Yup, dunny is extremely common around Australia. It seems to be one of those Aussie words that won't die. "Loo" is also common.

I personally prefer dunny.

We tend to call "restrooms" at most places the toilets, though.
