The hotness of a chilli is expressed in Scoville Heat Units, named after the American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville. In 1912, he devised a scientific test to measure just how hot chillies could be. On the Scoville scale, a bell pepper (capsicum) scores 0, a jalapeño pepper around 3,000 and a habañero a scorching 300,000.
One chilli you probably won’t be getting used to is the newly-discovered Naga Jolokia pepper from Assam in northern India. Until recently, the Guinness Book of Records listed the Red Savina Habañero as the hottest chilli in world, with a Scoville rating of 577,000. But this new contender claims the title with a flesh-burning score of 855,000, almost 50 per cent hotter. Typically, the military is investigating Naga Jolokia as a tear gas weapon.

I had a Phall made with the Naga chilli last week in Haydock. Suprisingly unlike other searingly hot curries this was very tasty, but good lord did it burn.

You don't even want to know about the following day

jalapenos aren't so bad. my flatmate eats them like sweets. i can probably eat maybe three or four before i have to have a drink though. scotch bonnet chillies are good - they'r the ones that go in hot sauce that you get for carribean cooking.

Us true afficienados get our seeds from private sources. My chilis are hybrid descendants of plants originally grow my my grandmother in San Antonio. My current plants are three years old, winters are mild here.

Why does the military research things which we can already do? Is there even much use for tear gas in modern warfare? Then again tear gas isn't that bad atm, maybe this will be much worse.

amature. try habenero (yeah, maybe not)

my kids pop habeneros like they are candy, jalepenos aren't spicey at all to them, more like a bell pepper would be to you.

btw, I read an article recently that spicey foods keep down your risk of prostate cancer, so you know if you have a prostate (me and my kids don't) you might want to build up some tolerance.

My kids and I have a tradition, before bed we say what's the best thing that happened today, the worst, the coolest thing we learned, and the best question we asked.

I am trying to keep up with the rest of my family, I have to learn cool things. I never know what the cool things they are going to learn are, so I try to learn at least 15 new things a day, so I have more variety.

My Aussie friend's Thai connections grows a wicked hybrid Thai chili (coming in somewhere around 100 kilo-SHUs) in a nice little hydroponic set up.

Do you et them fresh though? There was a plant in my living room and my little sister was like "I dear you to eat it." So I did. It was pretty damn ripe.

Yep. Fresh is usually the way to go if you're eating them straight and not cooking with them. Dried or smoked chilies are usually meant for cooking.

Any pepper sold at the common markets are often bred to be milder. Makes the common consumer feel bad-ass without the pain involved. If you want heat, use a Habenero, or scotch-bonnet (they're the same pepper).

I did hear recently about a newly discovered pepper from northern India that is much hotter than a Habenero. I have yet to find, let alone try one.
