82-year old woman given jaywalking ticket
I suppose the elderly really do not get any kind of respect when you are ticketed for taking to long to cross the street.

Uh... first off, police said that she started crossing after the "Do not cross" started flashing... which would mean she's not supposed to cross then. Perhaps she thought she started crossing when the light was on(It's possible she saw it when she was still well on the sidewalk, and stopped paying attention), but didn't notice that it had changed. Also, that light had already been changed for the elderly before.
So, she got what any other citizen would have gotten. No special treatment for those who don't pay attention.

Are you a female?

Nah, you're not heartless. You just have a sense for the law.

I'd say that no matter when she began to cross, the officer should have just helped her along instead of ticketing her. Considering all those who jump in front of traffic, just asking to get struck by a car, this is hardly anything the officer should have wasted time on.

That inconsiderate bitch. She endangered herself and others.

If I were an officer, and I were near her, and the "Do not walk" was on before she started crossing, I would have stopped her and informed her of it. Now, had she started crossing, gotten partly across before the change, I would have helped her, gladly.
That being said, Perhaps the officer was to far away and couldn't stop her or help her before she got across. If she wasn't paying attention to the light, and tried to cross, it is no excuse. No matter what the age.

Or, for that matter, the media.
Or, for that matter, the media.
Come on its L.A.! They'd see this as more interesting then a double murder! A granny getting a ticket? Hey, the paper claims the ticket getting WORLDWIDE condemnation. I wonder if that is true if the world had a boring day...

Does that fact that she was over the age of 80 mean nothing to anyone? She's not just retired or anything like that. Within the next ten years she will most likely be dead... Her faculties aren't quite what they were when she was say 30. Her hearing, sight and memory may have all declined. edit: I mean she's already lived past the LE of an american woman.
Do USA walk/don't walk signs make loud beepy sounds when you're allowed to cross? Just curious...

There is no standard. Some may noise automatically, others have no sound and still others are automatic walk/don't walk signals and you have to press a button for the sound. It really depends where you are but urban areas are usually always automatic signals so I'd say it was the latter.

Most do, some still don't, it depends on where you are.
OT: She shouldn't have crossed the street, but out of manners, not legislation, he should have just helped her across.
She's an old woman, there's honestly no reason she couldn't cross the street regardless. As for the cop I don't see how he sleeps at night writing an 82 year old woman with a cane a ticket.

Whoever allowed that woman to go out walking and crossing busy streets, should be fined. I mean, she upheld traffic, because she cannot function properly without assistance. It was a rude and inconsiderate act, but she cannot be blamed. Her caretaker should be.

What makes you think that she needs a 'caretaker'. Maybe she is fully capable of taking care of herself. Quite a number of 82 year olds are, you know.

Evidently not as she is not able to cross a road in time.

Cops are, in my experience, worthless sacks of shit.
This doesn't surprise me at all.
No doubt, however, the selfsame cops who bravely ticketed this eighty-one year old felon will self-congratulate themselves about how they are 'first responders' and are 'the front line' against 'terrorism'.
Seriously, though, good job LAPD. I'm glad that the rape, murder, and gang problem has been solved, so you have spare time to make sure that eighty-one year old women don't commit jaywalking violations.
Make sure you fingerprint her though. She could lead you to the head of the crips or the bloods.

Her freedom, indipendence and quality of life obviously worth less than ten seconds of the waiting drivers' time. Nice one

Less than ten seconds?
I've had to wait for 10 MINUTES for elderly people to cross the street. Her quality of life does not depend on crossing a busy city street. Perhaps a walk through a nice garden would improve her quality of life. With those great-great grandchildren of hers.
And no need for the sarcasm. Honestly. Learn to spell too.
Had she started to walk across the road while the, "Do Not Cross", sign was white instead of red I would agree that she shouldn't have been fined. However, she started crossing the road after the, "Do Not Cross", sign was red and she should be fined. Imagine if a motorist was coming down the road and hit the elderly woman because she didn't pay attention, imagine how that would have affected their life.

Ten minutes of your life, so tragic. I'd like to see how great your life would be if you couldn't cross the street.
And don't talk down to me son

Yo dog,
You're right, it wouldn't be great. I know that. I help take care of my great-grandparents on an almost daily basis. I don't want them crossing the street! It's too darned dangerous!
