Question for working people - how competent is your company's management?

So how well does your company (or other employeer) manage your workplace?

Personally, it's my opinion that those managing the company I work for are pretty incompetent. This is not to say that I would be competent to manage my company. However, raising the ire of what has been a long term loyal body oif employees to the point where a previously non-union work force is rapidly unionising, introducing new products the customer/students are being required to buy - without conducting any market research at all, numerous failures to honor employee contracts and labor law, and a rather long list of similar problems, is not what I would call good management.

My company's management is extremely competent of late. Great deals, great projects, the cash has started to really flow in, and the short-medium term outlook looks pretty good.

Must be nice. :)

On the upside, my current employeer is better than my previous employeers. that just doesn't say much for the private English education business in Japan.

At the moment I work for a large Pizza Company which is not Domino's, and I have to say that my manager...well, she does an okay job in motivating people, but she doesn't know a lot about management otherwise. She forgets to order new supplies, it took her four days to get new scissors and so on. She's not particularly reliable.

But then, her job is hardly what I would call real management.

I was constantly torn between doing what was good for the company and doing what they told me. Now I realise I should have done what was good for the company. It would have been more fun and I would have enjoyed my job more. I was silly not to as I was more or less fire proof. Damn nuns must have beat too much obediance into me.

They're mostly competant (hey, they are a part of the Dow 30), but unfortunately in my office there is no one with the leadership ability of a first year Boy Scout. That totally kills morale.

I've got no major complaints at my immediate level--the department is run well, the Writing Program is undergoing some major changes, but all for the better (new guy in charge), and even at the college level, everything seems to be okay (the Dean likes our department, so there's some upside there). Even the President of the University doesn't seem to be that large a douchebag. But at the legislative level--the guys who do the funding--there we've got real incompetence. Florida is rolling in money right now--multiple billions in surpluses--and they're wanting to freeze spending for not all educational levels.

My last job was an example of supreme competence, at least in the sense that they knew what they wanted as a product and were willing to do whatever was necessary to make that happen. They were the anti-shortcut company. Quality was the highest goal, and they paid us well to achieve that goal. And that product was beer. What a beautiful company. :D

I've worked at the same grocery store for the last 5 or 6 years while I've been in university, and the atmosphere is nice. We have 3 managers, who are all quite different. One is laid back and easy to talk to and get along with, another is all business and keeps the place running well, and the other is sort of in between. Sometimes he'll work, sometimes he'll sit back and relax, and sometimes he gets crazy. :p Mostly it runs smoothly, but sometimes there are minor little problems which I hear about, because I'm the shop steward for the union in our store. Really though, it's a great place to work.

I did an internship for a company recently, but they made me sign an agreement that prevents me from posting details (such as how competent I think the management was ;)).

at the club i work at there are too many managers. they always get the rotas wrong. they take ages to order new supplies. they always count the money into and out of the tills wrong and then blame it on us, taking our tips from us to compensate for the shortfall. they have never organised a single non-cosmetic repair to the club in the 6 months i have worked there despite there being several things that Health & Safety would have a few things to say about. they treat the staff like shit, taking away any perks we get when the club experiences the slightest difficulty (we earn minimum wage so this is significant). they rarely authorise time off. they are the most sleazy people i have ever met. they all have serious character flaws. they are the sort of people who are managers for the power it gives them. they are little men in big jobs. i don't like my managers much but i'm not alone, they are generally disliked by all the staff.

Sounds like you need a new job--and then you need to call Health and Safety on your way out the door.

i would but i really like the people i work with so i'm going to stay until everyone i know is going to leave. we have got a new top manager though so maybe things will change. he seems quite competent - at least, he looks all buisnesslike in a suit and he's always seen doing rounds of the bars making sure things are running smoothly. he's only been on about 2 weeks though so that may change. we'll see.

Where I work we have a customer first policy the problem is they don't really care about those of us on the ground, just as long as we complete all orders they won't complain to us.

They're very competent. We don't have any profit, but we're a non-profit, so that's ok. Some of the people in management I can say are some of the few people I really admire, both as managers and human beings.

I think if I had to pick a mascot for the company I work for, it would be a spider with roller skates: designed to move as fast as possible, but so uncoordinated, it can't even stand up, let alone get anywhere.

I guess that would depend on the mission of the University. If the mission is to loot as much as possible, gain high salaries and perks for the few upper management types - then they're doing a fine job.

If the mission is to conduct research and educate students, then they are failing miserably.

If the mission is to destroy the morale of their employees - they've succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

All managers are inherently incompetent, from my experience and that of my family and friends and loved ones. Worst of all, i feel, is middle management, the "team leaders" and "supervisors", who seem to be jumped up little Napoleons with no actual idea what they are doing.
